Selling a VIC Plated Car in QLD

Hello fellow OzBargainers,
Long time reader, first time post.

I have a question and was hoping your experience would help me.

I have a VIC plated car with me and currently live in regional QLD. I want to sell this car in QLD without driving it back to Victoria or transferring the rego to QLD myself before selling it.

I am unsure how to do this, or if even this is possible?

One option I thought would be to cancel my vic rego (expires in jan 17'), get a refund on the remaining rego portion, and sell it unregistered in QLD. Is this a viable option and does anyone have experience selling an unregistered car? What paper would would I complete to do this?

My car is a 2006 model, in fine mechanical condition, has low kms, well looked after, so it should be easy to sell especially where I live.

Your help is most appreciated,

Kind Regards

  • If you move to Queensland from another state or territory, you must get Queensland registration and a Queensland driver licence. You have 14 days to register your vehicle in Queensland and may be fined if you don’t.

Yes I'm aware of this, doesn't answer my question though.

      • I am unsure how to do this, or if even this is possible?

It does answer your question. It is possible…

    • Thats a bit odd, i have someone who lives on my street for at least the past 4 or 5 years with two cars that have queensland plates

I imagine if you have an address in the state of registration/licensing that paperwork is sent to, I doubt you'll get picked up. Mate in Vic has WA plates - been here 5 years.

Selling an unregistered car is tough. Potential buyers can't easily take it for a test drive, or to a mechanic for a check. Also, a buyer would be up for the cost of a roadworthy test and registration, which would cost $1000 (in Vic, anyway).

A 2006 car would likely sell for $6000 up to maybe $10,000, depending on what it is. Is a potential buyer likely to want to spend another say 10-20% on top, or are you willing to drop the price by that much?

Advertise it on gummy with your old vic address
In the first line of the add state it is in Qld

You are likely to get somone coming up to brisbane and needs a car to return, or is moving to vic, or wants yours and will visit rele's while picking it up….

short of that, rereg in qld and tear up big…

  • You sell your car unregistered and you either post your plates back to vic or hand then in at a qld transport center and get a receipt.

You only have to give the buyer a receipt of sale and make sure you get his details and copy of his D/L in case they want to pull something shonky with the car - ram raid etc.

Do not let buyer take the plates for any reason or they will rack up fines and tolls in your name.

    Options:
    1. get a roadworthy,
    2. Get it transferred into QLD rego prior to sale, or as a condition of sale.

    • Thank you kindly.
