Haha man I think you replied the wrong post. But thanks!
I'm going to buy a MacBook too. I'm still struggling to decide between MacBook Pro Retina and MacBook Air.
My university is one of the Australian universities that has the Apple on Campus program. We can purchase Apple products at a lower price than the normal education pricing.
MacBook Air (Base Model) - $1100
MacBook Pro Retina (Base Model) - $1410
If you have friends who are currently studying one of the universities:
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=apple+on+campus&oq=apple+…
You may try to ask them to help.
UNSW: http://store.apple.com/au_edu_800094
(I think they will call you for verification purpose, so you can't purchase without a valid student card from the respective university).
Or you may purchase from the grey market (e.g. Kogan, DWI). [Not recommended]
10% discount for Mac is pretty common (usually once per month).
OfficeWorks currently has the lowest price for Mac. Tips: if you found a advertised price of a product (only retailers that have a physical store) lower than the advertised price at OfficeWorks, you may receive further 5% discount from OfficeWorks. :)
thank you very much for the advice, i am a uni student so do qualify to get it for $1150, but like you said it could be as cheap as $1100. Im from VIC, so it seems as though UniMel is the only uni registered for apple on campus.
If we are lucky, retailers like Dick Smith offers 15% for Macs. So we need to pay only $1019 for it (or even as lower as $968 if you manage to get price match with OfficeWorks).
^ very rare occasion; no one can predict when they will actually do that.
However, considering net present value, I think $100 more is worth spending if you don't want to wait (worst case scenario we have to wait till January for discounted Macs). If you are going to overseas, claim the GST back in the airport.
If you want really cheap one, you may consider the refurbished ones at the Apple Store. The quality of the refurbished ones is usually as new and have a year warranty (you can purchase Apple Care for that).
Personally, I will wait till the Boxing Day because I don't really need it now.
I think ACU is in Victoria?
Yeah, thats it isnt it? Not sure whether to wait it out of just pay a bit more now.
ACU is, but have no one who goes there.
Yeah I was thinking about refurbished as well. What is your opinion on Apple Care? Is it a must?
@drakeraj: I just bought a MacBook Pro from OfficeWorks, price matched with Dick Smith. So paid only 1.3ishk for a MacBook Pro. That's about 15% off. :)
I asked another friend who purchased from the UniMelb's Apple on Campus. No student card required.
I don't actually know; but I won't enroll in AppleCare until I think I need it. One of my friends had his Air's hard drive spoiled within a year, and freaked him out so he enrolled in AppleCare later.

I will likely buy from the Apple Store directly. Melbournians are lucky to have a better deal for MacBook Pro Retina than the normal 10% discount. Students at UniMelb are entitled 12% for MBPr.
No offers for a few weeks, so depends on how soon you need it.
There is a refurb 13" for 1020 from the Apple store. If you get one with cosmetic blemishes you can return. Might get a battery that has been charged a few times, that's about all the downside.
PS: Purchased one from the above UNSW link for someone who is a student there for $1100. No check, didn't even need student email address. And it has already shipped.

Be smart and go for macbook. If something goes wrong, Lenovo will drive you nuts. I would always go with Apple who will fix or replace the machine next day itself.
