Unfortunately some of us a stuck with TomTom systems built into our cars and forced to pay excessive rates for updates.

    • How good is Waze to be used as GPS on phone? Never tried it. Does it need internet?

do ppl still pay for satnav? whats wrong with google map?

    • +1

Good deal for those that need it. Obviously you don't need it.

It uses data. Standard TomTom does not, unless subscribed to live services etc..

      • -2

        TomTom does no

So how do you get the maps ? Do they mail you a CD?

        • With the inbuilt satnavs you generally download the updates onto a USB and install them through a menu in your car.

        • Download to your PC or Mac. Download done thru TomTom software and your TomTom account. Note this will require the Nav device (or SD Card from said device) you intend to use Maps on to be connected thru USB to ensure your download is authorised for your device should you need it at some later date.

Alive!, time to close my JV forum topic.

        • I feel so honoured you are replying to me. Lol. Ofcourse, the initial setup will require data for the latest updates, etc. However, navigating maps on the go, do not. Unlike Google where you need to be online to access maps.

No you don't, you can download them…

@jv: really? I didn't know this. Nice! Thanks for this.

  • Yeah, those paying for sat nav software shouldn't be on ozbargain anyway. Here maps has been free for ages and doesn't use data. Tomtom will be history soon, like BlackBerry

    • So if you drive a BMW with satnav (map updates cost you $400+ each year) or a Toyota with satnav (map updates cost you around $300 each year) you should not be on ozbargain. I don't think so.

We all can't wait for IOS or Android to be the standard OS provided on all new vehicles. Unfortunately the car manufacturers, dealerships and their mates make way too much money by using proprietory systems.

Add Mazda to the list. Mine has a built-in TomTom system and despite knowing my way round GPSs, and having multiple cracked Garmin maps, I haven't been able to get a map update… so this might work for me.

        • If you can find a working coupon code you may even be able to get it cheaper (as per last year ozb tomtom posting). Mazda NB1 Australia map 971 has just been released and available for download now.

UPDATE: Coupon Code "Welcome15_au" will give you another $20 off on top of the 40% savings for the yearly Map subscription bringing the total down to an almost reasonable $33.97

        • Thanks Rifter!

    • Totally agree.. Used Here maps recently in the USA from California, Nevada, Utah, SC, NC then Washington DC without flaws. LA motorway driving with Here maps was flawless..

    • TomTom is actually a map provider that supplies map sources to many other companies. History? I doubt it.

      • lots of people said that about blackberry when iphone came out, and now what, even the Chinese doesn't even bother buying blackberry. Tomtom has only managed to survive so far because of this exclusive maps integration agreement with car manufacturers, but this doesn't last long until Google and Nokia squeeze it out.

        • You're comparing two different things. There are not that many original map suppliers in the world, of which the two biggest ones are Teleatlas and Navteq. Teleatlas makes a HUGE amount of maps for GPS systems and was purchased by TomTom a few years back now. That is why they are on car navigational systems too since the car manufacturers all have to get their maps from somewhere. Navteq (just as big) was purchased by Nokia and is a part of their HERE / Nokia Maps. They also supply to a number of downstream manufacturers including Garmin as well.

Even if the retail arm of TomTom goes down, they still have their Teleatlas business to rely upon to sell map source data to others.

  • Just buy a new one
All this is free now for 'lifetime'
Your old ones about to die anyway

    • Not valid for in-car nav systems or many other non-IOS/Android discrete devices.

just use your phone in your car instead of the built in system… will save you $$$$$

        • My phone doesn't have an 8 inch screen. And if it did it would look stupid stuck up on my windscreen.

1 Year speed camera updates all the way down from $49.95 to $9.97!
    great, was waiting for this!

  • Having major problems.
Tomtom website says 40% off but when I actually go to buy the maps they're all at full price. It's still 31 Jul.

    • Just tried to buy aussie map for my daughters tomtom and i get the same issue as you.

Yep its a worldwide problem, looks like they closed the offer when they knocked off for the week on Fri pm 29th. Their support forum has several similar complaints.

I just rang customer service and they said "Bad luck, offer has expired, have a nice day."
