Experienced Mattress Buyers - Where to Get and What to Get a Super-king Size?

Calling on all Experienced Mattress Buyers:

My wife and I have always told ourselves that we need to invest in decent mattress ASAP. It is a worthy investment and returns value right away.
Yet the lofty price tags—-not really just because they are expensive— but the fact there may be made up of sheer profits, puts us off.

Would like to hear from all the experienced OZB where to and what to get for decent mattress. No fixed budget as long as they really worth the price and do last.

UPDATE 8/7/16—-should have mentioned we are after a SUPER-KING size (203x203) mattress, a lot of the places mentioned dont stock this size..

Many thanks!

  • Hey guys I'm a mechanic by trade and I'm sick of waking up with aches every morning because of my absolutely shitty saggy mattress. I keep hearing latex is the best would anyone be able to point me to the place with the best prices? Or any upcoming sales?

    • hey fellow mech, I recommend going to a brick and mortar shop that has display mattresses and trying the different ones out. A lot of people recommended staying away from memory foam if you have a structural cause for back ache, ie impinged nerve, but I tried out the different mattresses and found memory foam was the most comfortable and got a Tempur.

      • I want a Tempur really bad but I plan on moving end of the year to a bigger place so I don't want to spend big money on a king single bed as I plan on going to a king. I'm going to go to Mr snooze tomorrow try a Tempur and if I like it buy an Ergoflex the reviews seem really sound. Thanks for your feedback my chiropractor did recommend memoryfoam/latex mattresses. I honestly don't think I have any permanent issues with my back I just know my mattress is really saggy I should of replaced it years ago, so my mattress is definitely a factor which needs to be remedied.

        • If you are confident that the chiropractor has excluded a structural cause for you backache, go for it.

But yeah, have a shot at the different mattresses.

    • hi mate, try this brand Kymdan, Sydney 0297550675, or Mel (03) 9687 2177.Trust me you"ll never look back.

      • Are you sure? I'm a tad suss about Vietnamese made mattresses.

        • believe me mate, it's 100% natural rubber latex. How many countries in the world can produce a natural rubber? not many. Today, South east Asia is the main source of natural rubber, made up 95%. Kymdan made the natural latex mattress since 1954.

        • I'll call them tomorrow, but it's most likely out of my price range.

  • I perfer latex mattress over spring mattress. From my research Onebed, Greywing and Ecosa are offering same mattress with same packaging in a box. Something is not right . Their websites are very similar and prices are almost identical . I think they all located in Victoria. Not sure. I will try to avoid online and go with latex from genuine stores.

Being newly married I bought a 4K Aussie made but couldn't handle all that pushing the bed is a figure eight shape now

    • That must have been difficult, how did you have any energy left for sex?

        Look at this username..

      • He just said that he's married - everything stops after that.

  • I've just ordered a Queen size from Sleeping Duck.

  • Buying a mattress is the worst. Guarantees not worth the paper they are written on and impossible to compare prices or specs with every store having their own models. Laying for half an hour doesn't do anything either and they all feel wonderful in store.

We went through a lot of mattresses due to my back problems etc, and I would highly recommend ergoflex (ie like tempur but cheaper). They are regularly half price. With memory foam, they can get warm, but I could never go back to a spring mattress anymore. We've had this one for a few years now, which is by far the longest we've had a mattress for (and it's still fine and comfortable). I've heard good things about latex mattresses too.

  • Many recommending ergoflex.

So will they be suitable for all body shape? Me and wife just around 60 kg each and back and side sleepers.

Price is affordable but, can we be sure they are up to the quality of sealy or king coil or tempur?

    • I suspect the lighter you are, the less important it becomes. In other words, a spring mattress would probably be fine if you are 60kg, but probably less ideal if you are 120kg.

We've had Sealy and King Coil mattresses in the same price range (keeping in mind that the several thousand dollar more expensive ones may or may not be better), and the ergoflex has been far superior.

But yeah, we are a bit heavier, so I can't say if it will be comfortable for you. I suspect it will be fine. Ignoring personal preferences of course as I'm sure there are people that hate memory foam regardless of weight.

As for if they are same quality as tempur, I would assume that they are probably not (I haven't owned a tempur but the feel is the same). Although I'd suspect they are likely comparable and that much of the price difference is in the brand name, I'd expect the tempur to have a slight edge if you were to do a detailed side by side comparison. That said, it's also several times more expensive and hardly several times better.

Edit: we bought a solid base for the ergoflex as per recommendations when purchasing. I feel like it's held up much better than if we would have had slats, but I don't really have any basis for that.

      • How about heat retaining feature during summer? Would it make people wake up sweating, or worst, can't sleep because too hot?

        • Yes, this is the main drawback with a bed like this in the Australian climate.

Wether this is a problem for you is hard to tell as it would depend on too many factors. For example, we used to get really sweaty in summer in our old top floor apartment. But now that we live in a house, it's much better despite using same mattress. During really warm QLD summer days (and nights), we are happy to use aircon though. So it's never really been a big issue for us. But definitely something to consider if you hate sleeping warm and /or don't have aircon for those emergency days.

Since your weight is so low, it might also be less of an issue as you'd sink down less.

  • I bought the latex top queen mattress which is always "on sale" from Prestige Mattresses Melbourne for $499 been very comfortable and supportive for many years

  • How much "action" is goin on in the bedroom?

  • i don't want to say this but you better looking at some Chinese band
i don't know where you based….but if you are in Sydney you might looking for a band called "Prince" or "The best"
they really blows all the other brands away at least for the budget that i can take…600-900 brand new with least 10 or 15 years warranty.
the reason is simple…if you looking for hard strong mattresses, THAT's what they do….
as overseas student i spend about 2years time finding similar mattresses in Australia and ended up in those seller hiding them behind BBS and Chinese communities. most of Chinese prefer mattress to be a bit hard but they can't buy those mattress in Australia market at all making them have to import and sell these mattresses..
by the way if you feel some hotel's mattress is comfortable and not too soft…. they could be Chinese hard mattresses.

rule-never pay full price for a mattress. retails will often have 40-50% % off so buy them then. side support frame an important feature to me, and then it just comes down to what else is important to you, easy to flip with handles, decrease in partner disturbance, spring system and support areas etc. do your research and work out what's important to you in a mattress and then go try some out. if you have a partner, make sure you try them together as i find it helps.goodluck

  • I read some comments, but always get one on sale.

It's like jewellery, if it's not a 50% sale, you are paying too much.

I bought a mattress from bev marks, really happy with it, but it's due for an upgrade 9 years now.

Next one will be the brand of one from a hotel that I used to stay down in Melbourne.

AJ/AH beard maybe? Comfiest thing ever.

  • OMG! People pay over $1000 for a mattress! Obviously I'm satisfied far too easily!

    • Its a weird business. Freakonomics did a podcast: http://freakonomics.com/podcast/mattress-store-bubble/

The markups are massive - most of the profit is in retail. Online can be a bargain, but you don't get to try easily.
And people buy for irrational reasons.
A lot of us spend too much, but keep the mattress too long.
I got an Ikea foam one. Very comfy so far (and easy to get home :) , but am sceptical it will last as long as a spring mattress, despite the long warranty. The washable zip-off cover is good.

  • Has anyone tried ozmattress?

  • I have personally found King Coil to be long lasting & good quality
    http://www.kingkoil.com/catalog/mattress/firm/c-25/c-81

  • You can buy a commercial mattress for half of what they cost retail. If it's good enough for a 5* hotel it's probably good enough for our lazy arses.

I've got one similar to this.
    http://johnnysfurniture.com.au/bedding/sleepmaker?product_id…

  • Second the opinion on getting an Asian brand mattress if you want firm. I've slept on my seahorse mattress for over 20 years and it's still very firm and going strong. Hate beds in hotels where most of the time I feel I've half sunken into it.

  • Has anyone tried out the Zzz Atelier mentioned on Ozbargain previously?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/243772

  • We like our http://www.ozmattress.com.au/ grandmaster which someone here recommended, cost 2k is similar to 5+k ones at harveysnorman they online only made in oz if want cheaper there sleeping duck flatpacked from china.

  • Tempur. Then chuck on a woollen underlay to counteract the breathability issue. I genuinely look forward to it every day.

  • I had a nice soft mattress but it wasn't stored properly by the removal company and the inner core got wrecked—- don't store it upright! I had the bright idea of buying a medium mattress and thinking it would soften up over time. It never did!
I bought one of those mattress toppers at Kmart. It was excellent but kinda weird putting one of those on a mattress that already had a pillow top.

  • I was looking for a mattress and was sick of the retail shops as I knew they are selling a mattress for $3000 probably costs them like $1000 anyway I started going online and found this had great reviews http://www.ozmattress.com.au/grandmaster.html

I was a little sceptical not being able to try it but took the punt even spoke with the owner Stefan got a few free pillows thrown in and never looked back had it for 3 years now and its still comfy love it!

I also got a few other family members onto it and they love it to! although when I purchased was a little cheaper, but well worth looking at these guys! very good service.

I am no way affiliated with this business either.

    • How did you manage to get the free pillows thrown in?
Am looking at buying a King Grand Master with base soon.

  • "Second the opinion on getting an Asian brand mattress if you want firm."

    Brand names? Where to try/buy?

  • Just get one of these for $300. I honestly like it a lot more than my $2000 Sealy I bought from David Jones.

Bit firm, but not too firm. Just the way I like it.

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/marce-blanc-mattress.html

    • Can I ask how the marce blanc is now? Considering it for a cheap option but lots of mattresses appear to sag over time.

      Thanks

      • It's still quite firm, hasn't seemed to sag with daily use over the last 10 months. Pleasantly surprised it's still holding up well.

        • can i ask how it is now?

        • @28kb: Unfortunately I won't be able to, I got rid of it at the start of the year when I moved from Sydney back to Melb.

It was still fine then though. So all I can confirm is it should last at least a year with daily use…

        • @Haters.Inc: Thanks, just bought one, hopefully last a few years and i dont get a dud

          • @28kb: How is your purchase going? Any issues?

  • Had my second night on a new king size Ergoflex last night. Slept better than the first night but still a long way off a good nights sleep. It's very firm and I doubt we will be keeping it. Will more than likely return it next week and hit the Dept Stores looking for something more suitable.
Reviews from people who have had the mattress for over a year do not fill me with confidence either.

  • My wife and I recently purchased the Super King Hypnos Balmoral from BedsNDreams - https://www.bedsndreams.com.au/mattress-resources-hypnos-bal…

They don't seem to list the super king on their website, but we picked one up from our local store for around $4500 on sale and we absolutely love it to bits - it's little wonder the Queen & Oprah choose to sleep on this mattress!
