Apparently the WD 8TB contains a 8TB red drive inside. Pretty handy to throw into a file server or NAS.

According to a number of 1 star reviews the enclosure features encryption that can't be turned off, meaning if the enclosure fails your data is gone - it can't be moved to a different enclosure.

If you're still happy to buy knowing this that's cool. Don't vote me down simply for providing the info.

    • +1

You need to add that your comment is about the WD HDD not about the Star Trek discs.

      • Lol. If you read the whole comment including the enclosure and misunderstand that's not on me.

    • so you can't crack it open and use it as an internal hdd ?

      • +2

Even if you can you won't be able to read data written to it while it was in the enclosure if these reoorts are true.

  • Up to 54.99 now. :-(

You're absolutely right. It wasn't clear enough to me that VAT was so much of the price. Good to know. Buying now, LOL.

  • +1

Thanks mate, purchased the 8tb! Only wanted a 4tb but the comment about the WD red and $36/tb was too good to pass up.

  • +1

Thanks OP, I've been waiting for this deal for quite a while. Ever since I found out that 5TB and 8TB hard drives are only $50 different.

Closest deal was the 8TB Seagate external one for $279 a while ago. However, I only buy WD hard drives, never failed on me ever.

    • What? This WD deal went up £10 since I posted it I think

      • +1

When did you post your deal? I just searched through and couldn't find a single other deal on the WD 8TB hard drive. Only Seagate ones. By quite a while I mean 2 months. My WD 4TB now has 10GB of space left lol, I definitely need an 8TB one.

        • Oh I meant that this deal was posted 01/07 (3 days ago) and since then the price has gone up by 10 pounds. But all good I think, as the pound/aud has continued to fall since then, so the final price should be similar.

  • Awwww man! I'm so bummed out now. Didn't realise the price went up, thought it would go down once I got to the removal of the VAT stage.

    • You can always cancel your order if you want, but the difference from few days ago isn't much at all (around $5) as the GDP has continued to fall against the AUD.

      • +1

Nah, all good. The last deal on an external 8TB drive was 3 months ago with your Seagate one. God knows how long I'll have to wait before this dips down to $291. Ended up paying £168.09 for it delivered, hopefully turns into $304 with the Citibank Plus account. Kogan wants $496 + $9 delivery.

  • Merged from Western Digital My Book 8TB External Hard Drive £159.85 (~ AU $279) @ Amazon UK

Second cheapest price according to http://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/Western-Digital-Book-External-…

0.46gbp higher this time around, however seems we now have a MUCH better exchange rate from when that deal was posted a week ago (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/255484).

Make sure you select Amazon as the shipper in the right hand column.

Edit: Went to make that bold because some people completely skipped past it. Someone beat me to it! (Thanks!)

The default (cheapest) seller of this is a third party (who also at this time only has 4 in stock, not enough for me to have posted it). To get the price I've mentioned, and a seller who will actually ship to Australia, you need to choose Amazon as the seller.
On the right, below 'Add to basket' you will see:

Choose that seller, and VAT will be removed for you at checkout.

Says the seller does deliver to Australia. Plus only four in stock.

      And how much?? $274 thousand!

      • Says the seller does deliver to Australia.

        Well, that's good then! :)

        • I think he means "doesn't". From the link: Sorry, this Seller doesn’t deliver to Australia

          • @syba: Yep. That's what I meant.

      • Was rushed, but like I said, change the seller to Amazon.
On the right side of the page you will see:

        Click that one.

    • for $274354AUD it will be the most expensive 8TB hdd ever

      • Lol. Yeah. Caught that and updated it. Not soon enough!

    • Can you take the hard drives out of these? What type are they?

      • So I am told, you can, they are WD Red, HOWEVER, you will lose all data when you do, as encryption cannot be turned off.
So if the enclosure fails, you've risked the data, but if you take it out to use before putting stuff on it, there should be no issue.

    • The lower price seller doesn't deliver outside uk.
Amazon's supply is $172.87 then less VAT so will be approx 144.06GBP
      Shipping is 15.79GBP
So all up $288.13 AUD is what I get.

      • Yes, that's the price I said, just a slightly different exchange rate.

Got one on the way. Paid 296$ last week. For an 8tb red that's inside its a great price over $500 at msy.

      • Is it one HD or two inside?

        • it says one bay - my mistake

        • @flashi007:
          Yeah just the one.
You can get 2 bay 8tb but the price really gets up there. This is the best deal especially if you want to take the drive out.

I paid $340 for an internal 6tb a couple of weeks ago during the eBay sales.

    • AUD isn't so strong, but GPB is worse.

    • (mind blown) wow didnt know they have 8Tb nowadays…

      • Its been around for a while now.

    • +1

This is an insane deal. Thanks OP just got one. I bought one on Amazon US a few weeks back for ~AU$370. That sucks, but this price is great. Popped the drive out of the enclosure and it has been working like a champ inside my desktop.

      • +1

what type of drive was it? If it was a red i'll buy one!

        • I'll have to check for you when I get home but I don't think it's a red. The label certainly wasn't red, it was white. I remember reading elsewhere that apparently it's a modified version of the reds that has been paired back in some ways. I got max transfer speeds around 160mbs.

        • +1

          It's a WD80EZZX-11CSGA0. White label. 128MB cache and manufactured in May 2016.

  • Thanks … just got 3x8TB for 264$ each :-). Lets hope they work in my Synology Nas.

  • Price dropped again on the 8tb HDD. Now at £168.54. With VAT removed at the checkout ,it drops to only £140.45.
And current exchange rate of GBP to AUD of 1.73(ish) = $242ish AUD each.

I wonder how fast it would be delivered.

    • Don't forget shipping costs … :-)

I got my deliveries always within 1-2 weeks.

    • Ah, yes. I just bought two. Shipping costs for the two units was $34ish.
So total should be about $518. $260 ish a piece.

  • Just bought another 2 HDD lol…$522 shipped…Great price.
Would they refund me the difference for the first one I bought?

    • With the customer service amazon has, always worth a try i guess.

      • +1

Just bought at the new price of roughly $273 AUD. That's a saving of around $31 since I bought 3 days ago! The Amazon rep said that they could do a full refund as it hasn't left the country yet, cancelled it for me. Amazing.

      • +1

Just had a chat with an amazon rep and he was happy to refund me 15GBP. which was very good of him.

        Great customer service indeed.

So basically 3x8tb cost me $772 where the same things would have cost over $1500.

        Thanks for the post mate.

        • could u pls let us know what HDD is inside these once you get them out.

also with the other 2 drives you bought what hdd's are they?

          thanks..

PS: was hoping theres still hope in scoring the hgst helium drives..

        • @j03:
I think the HGST drives were a batch sold by best buy in the USA.

On a couple of reviews on Amazon UK they said there were WD reds inside.
Other sites reported WD white drives. Not sure if that was UK or USA

I should have one sometimes this week. The two I ordered later have not shipped also 8tb My book. Says dispatching soon and arriving on the 20-22nd July.

Will update once one gets here and I take it out.

  • I am getting AUD 280.09 delivered for one. 1 GBP = 1.7926593186 AUD, the rate is not very good.

    • Do you have a fee free card such as 28 Degrees or Bankwest Platinum? If so, just pay directly in GBP and let your card do the conversion for you, which will work out to be around AU$273

      • Been thinking about getting the 28 Degrees card, but did not get the chance to apply. Only $7 diff, maybe I will just go for it with my current card. Thanks for the tip.
