  • can you pick 1 up for me if you're still there? I'm from sydney too but I'm stuck at work… Thank you so much :)

  • King of knives worst website in history

Be careful with these laguiole knives. There are a lot of fakes out there. They fall apart very quickly.

    • The fakes fall apart or the Laguiole knives? :)

Laguiole is just the name of the town where this design originated, so there is more than one company producing them there, and there is nothing to stop anybody else calling their knives that. If you buy the French made knives, they are likely to last (I wouldn't know, they cost a bomb). The Chinese made options fall apart after a few months of going through the dishwasher.
I think it is related to the different amount of expansion/contraction in the knife blade, plastic handles and metal rivet pins and end caps, so perhaps wouldn't be such an issue if you hand wash them.

They look nice for $50, but start failing after 3 months. After 2 years, not a single fork in our drawer retains the silver end cap, and half the knives are missing their's too.

        • When I was in France I made a point of going to the town where the real knives are made. They are all hand made and it is pretty neat to see how they construct them from start to finish. My pocket knife was about $100 aud but worth it. Great knife!

With these types of knives NEVER put them in the dishwasher. Hand wash only.

        • I was given a set of "Laguiole" style cutlery from King of Knives a few years back. The knives were absolutely blunt (they were all meant to be sharp) and the build quality was appalling.

I forget where I read it but, there was some suspicion that some of the knives at King of Knives are homebrand. ie King of Knives is the only place you can find that brand. My "Laguiole" ones were an example of when homebrand can be bad.

(Note: I was also given a chopper from there, again homebrand, that turned out to be very good.)

Yep…the fakes just don't cut it I'm afraid.

  • So the general assumption is that the rrp $50 knives discounted to $5 are fakes? How to tell if the one is original? As the one that I got has good finish and is heavy?
