$14 for a TV tuner for an Android device… tempting until read the review

It’s frustrating, and you might get only a few seconds to half a minute of broadcast only to have it begin to break up, providing a broadcast that would be too difficult to watch without wanting to throw that smartphone or tablet at something.

Requires multi core android phone with USB Host Mode (OTG) functionality, ruling out use with cheap phones but most cheap tablets should work.

Can't charge phone / tablet while watching TV as as micro-USB is occupied by dongle, so viewing time is limited :-(

Seems the only way it can be successfully used is if plugged into a good fixed antenna - defeating the purpose of a mobile device. Even then it is limited - retuning every time the app is opened, recording in its own format, poor app design. Might as well just use the TV or cheap tuner on a computer, & still use your device.

Other reviews of app on Play under "D-Link TV tuner" have more positive experiences, but only rates 2.8/5. 1* reviews are most common. Positive review from use on tablet in car!

      • To get TV on a tablet, use the PC TV tuner and beam it with Splashtop.

      • To charge phone/tablet while watching TV, get a wireless charging kit (dependent on the model of phone/tablet you have, and whether the battery is removable)

      • Can't charge phone / tablet while watching TV as as micro-USB is occupied by dongle

Incorrect, some although not all USG OTG cables allow charging. Check xda for something that works.

I think I'd rather just use TV Portal or Showbox for free though :p

        • I should have worded that differently as there are other ways to charge some phones & tablets, just not mine ;-)

One of my tablets can charge through OTG while in other use, but charging rate is not enough to view movies for extended period while powering an external device. What can I expect with cheap gear from OzBargain deals 😀

      • +3

Bought it anyway. Hoping it would work OK outside with my tablet

        • +1

Just tried it. The app is crashing out on the Xperia Z, but the Nexus 6 handles it like a breeze. It manages OK on the loop antennae, and the review that stated you need the app to view saved programs needs up-dating [ or was wrong] - it saves MP4s which open and run fine in VLC.

        • @terrys:
Great. Seems it was a pre-release review, & may not reflect current app use. Review said recordings were not showing, but it was likely could be played in other apps.

        • @Infidel: Seems pretty cool - my Nexus 10 handled it with aplomb, but the Oppo Find screen 7 hung after the "scaning" (sic) screen, although the station was playing. Using the Adroid back button to exit the app then re-starting was fine tho. One glitch is the favourite/EPG pop-out not wanting to display at the top or bottom edge [ tho it did on the nexus 10], but I guess D-Link have their reputation and traditional standards to meet.

        • @terrys: I can't get it to work. Crashes on channel scan

        • +1

@supnigs: Sad - I had trouble with the Xperia Z, which crashed about three times on poor signals, then for some funny reason decided it was happy with it. The Nexus and Samsungs appear to be fine with it, and mikeham in a post below has got it running fine on a cheaper single core tablet.
You've got a fair reason to take it back if your phone is multi-core with OTG - but I actually went down and got a second one for a friend.
I did the channel scans outside or on a full ariel connection - the Sony crashed on weak channels.

        • @terrys: thanks for the tips. Will try on a phone tomorrow

        • +1

@supnigs: Try knaff's tip, uninstall the D-Link app, and try PadTV. It was a lot nicer on the Nexus 7 :-).

        • @terrys: thanks so much! this is awesome. that padtv app works :)

          @supnigs: Thank knaff - I'd dissed it …

Bought one and wouldn't recommend it. It can be used with chrome cast if you cast your screen.

      • wouldn't you just use the tv as tv instead of making things complex?

        • The antenna was on the other side of the house we rented. Ended up just buying a stupid long cable.

    • +4

I have bought one and tested it. It is AWESOME.
I only use the attached small antenna and set the country as Australia and scanned. It took about 3 minutes and searched all of the free air channels.
My android phone is immediately converted to a hand held TV. No legging or ma-sacs on standard resolution channel, but only occasionally a bit delay on HD channels.
There are still some left under the mobile phone counter. It definitely worth the price(my opinion). Picture and sound have both digital quality.
Negative things: heated up in a few minutes but no affect watching
use more battery than watching online video

Tested on samsung note 2 and Huawei p6 in Ryde area

Installed one of those lenovo tab 3's in my car, not the most amazing job but having all the functionality of Android in an older car is quite nice.
    http://imgur.com/ZfORJ0q

I have changed that car charger so there's no annoying blue light

Even though it only has 1gb of RAM it's still snappy enough to do all I want it to (Torque app with obd2 adapter, Google play music, maps, etc)

    • Oh that is cool.

    • +4

Wow that's awesome! Where did you get the instructions to do that?

      • Why can't he have done this on his own without instruction?

Sorry, but it irks me that every time someone seems a cool diy they expect an Ikea style instruction book to come with it. Sure some people might document their process but these people usually do it for themselves. I commend them for it to.

        • +1

If you bothered to read the one line comment at no point did the post claim that he didn't do it on his own without instructions. But I guess you just saw what irks you.

      • +3

No instructions, as the tablet was the perfect width to fit in the slot I just had to extend the fascia's double din slot so the Single Din head unit and tablet would fit in perfectly. I drilled some holes on the side to fit the Power and AUX cables.

    • +1

      Good use for the tablet.
As previously posted, did similar, but basic, job over a year back with a $27 7" Huawei Mediapad 7 lite from Coles deal (single core - so can't add this tuner & using browser is crap). Has GPS with offline maps or online GoogleMap, touch screen operates $80+ Sony MEX-N5050BT Bluetooth headunit via app, steams music (free with Optus), plays movies, YouTube, internet TV, etc.

Pretty easy to set up (physical mounting is most difficult if want professional finish), designed so tablet clips in/out. Only needed to install the App & connect the power cable as audio is via Bluetooth. Works well, but will upgrade tablet when I find another cheapie.

    • There are a few at OW across the road from Marion HN if people want to go for price match, they still have $79 on them :-0

  • +2

    Don't see prices as mentioned.

    • If you are talking about the modems they are in store only according to chat :)

  • The S5 comes down to $398 with amex.

    • Sorry, guess I'm not in the loop - how so?

    • Can I have a link for amex deal please?

    • +2

The maximum number of people have already enrolled in the hn Amex offer, so unless you have already enrolled, it's not valid.

  • +1

There are so many other phones I'd buy over that S5.

My wife's Vodafone variant doesn't even have Marshmallow yet.

    • +2

Fair enough, do you have suggestions on better phones at that price point (or below)?

      • This with $30 recharge included or This

        • +1

          iphone 5s

That's a great deal for Apple enthusiasts, but any local stock ANDROID phone that is better than S5 at this price point?

  • +6

Still you'd have to think 448 is a pretty bad price for a phone that's over 2 years old

    • It is. Ridiculous. At $250 it'd about right and not even a bargain.

      • Strongly disagree. Great price for a great phone.

        • Wow, suckers everywhere. Fine, go and buy you 2 year old phone that gets trounced by phone half the price.

        • @Diji1:
Seriously, what would you recommend then? I want a cheap, non-laggy 5" android phone for the wife, what do you suggest instead of an S5?

        • -1

@Diji1:This 2 year old phone is technically better than many MediaTek powered Chinese phones at this price point.

        • @devilishm: I guess you have never installed the Google Play by yourself on one of these Chinese phones, haven't you?

        • Please explain to me how the s5 is better than the redmi note 3 pro. I genuinely want to know.

        • -1

@motor89: I only answered the question. If you can't figure this out using Google search you don't deserve to save the money.

        • Please let me know of a better phone with Australian 2 year warranty which I don't have to worry about if the phone has the correct frequency if I change providers. Thanks

        • @abacus: not gonna try to help any more. Just enjoy your 2 year old phone. I know I'm having fun with a much better one. :)

*Samsung fanbois are almost as bad as apple's now.

  • Does "40% Off Microsoft PC Accessories" include Surface accessories?

    • No they are 15% off :)

      • Yeah just saying because your link is including search results of Surface products, so it got my attention is all.

        • fair enough I think it was easiest way to find all the accessories

  • Just out of curiosity, when will you use a 3G USB?

    • Any laptop without 3G modem built in, any location where ADSL/Cable broadband not available. Any chinese Android car stereos with OTG cable for 3G modem so you get broadband for the car.

      • Silly me.. I thought it was 3GB USB

  • Looks like the MS Store is price matching HN on it's surface accessories, at least you've got a backup if HN runs out.

Got the lenovo tablet from the good guys deal. Definitely reccomend it. Good little tablet.

  • +1

Bought the D-Link DTV tuner (thanks, OP) at $14 with store pickup because cheapest delivery was $7.95, which is silly for a $14.00 buy.

Am familiar with these devices after years of tinkering with RTL-SDR. Was sold by the Android compatibility, which is still rare.

The weakest point is always the supplied antenna, and the one that comes with this one looks to be a total horror.

Throw the antenna away and add something sensible via the (supplied) adapter. The gadgetguy reviewer claims "that would mean being tethered to the wall", which is laughably incorrect.

    • +1

I don't have any problem with the supplied antenna. I took the phone wandering around the house and watching TV on the phone, no breaking picture at all. I might be lucky in a good area…

      • I can see the TV transmitter towers on Mt Dandenong from my back yard here in Melbourne, so signals boom in. Perhaps you're in a similarly optimal location.

It would be interesting to learn how your tuner fares with the supplied "antenna" if you travel to other areas.

        • I am 6km away from the tower. I will test it somewhere else tomorrow.

    • +2

Picked it up this afternoon from HN, tested on a $35 tablet (single core ARM Cortex-A5 @120GHz, i.e. complete rubbish, less than D-Link states as bare minimum.)

Well, waddya know - it worked! SD only on this pathetic tablet. The antenna is even worse than it looked, BUT you get an adaptor into which you can plug something usable. Even the most feeble eBay $2 antenna will be vastly better.

Thanks to OP TRENT86 and ThBloke!

      • Which single core tablet?
For me, computer says no :-(
App is incompatible for my My old single core, 1.2 GHz Cortex-A8 CPU, Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite tablet is incompatible with the apps.

        • Turns out my tablet's OS is too old. (Despite specs stating Android 4.0.3 is minimum requirement, which is on tablet, apps require 4.1. So an upgrade may get device to work.)

  • +1

The Lenovo tab is on Officeworks ebay store for $76 with free delivery.

Pro tip for the Dlink TV tuner, use PadTV app instead of the dlink one

    • Is it possible to use it on laptop ?

      • Requires Android OS.
Plenty of cheap tv tuners for laptops, which probably work better.

    • Protip for the android user - PadTV finds no device, and if you have reset the default action on attaching the tuner, you have to clear the defaults again as D-link tuner will also report no device. It's a shame, as time-shift would be nice. Also, recording stops if you change channel in the D-link app [ no surprises there].
Another little annoyance is it is tricky to "favourite" the bottom channel [ Channel 44 for me] but I managed by selecting the channel above, then hitting the favourite heart before lag tried and failed to move the favourite/epg pop-up down.

      • Works with a Samsung s5, Nexus 7 and Lenovo Tab 2 a7-20, what device do you have?

Try uninstalling the dlink app as it sounds the two share configs.

Don't use the HD version either, it's rubbish.

        • That could be it - I'd already installed it on the nexus 6 I tested on. I might have a play tomorrow, as time-shift would be nice. Maybe some of those having trouble on other devices could also give it a go, as it looks like they have been a bit more thorough in their testing than D-Link…

    • Tried that one on the nexus 7 - a nicer looking app with the time-shift buffer. The channel selection and ability to shift the garbage channels lower was nice and seeing the immediate EPG in the selection window was nice, but D-link's `favourites' menu and fuller dedicated EPG is also useful. What I would like is an ability to dump the racing and 24 hr adverts for 'demtel' standard junk stations :-/

    • For those having trouble with the D-link one, supnig was having all sorts of trouble with the D-link app, tried this one and was well pleased…

  • anyone know if the 3g optus modem is carrier locked?

  • The tv tuner should work on a chromebook i suppose. Ill give it a go. Was really after a dvt usb for my qnap ts251 , just cant seem to find anything that works for the qnap tv tuner. Thanks foe the post.

    • Providing you have a micro USB port or an adaptor. At this price, if it doesn't, you can grab a cheapy Android pre-paid and get a portable smart FHD TV with inbuilt recorder and Miracast out.

      • Requires multi core android phone with USB Host Mode (OTG) functionality, (see link below) - ruling out use with cheap phones but most cheap Android tablets should work.

Otherwise I'd give this a try at $14.
TV on a small screen - interesting, but wouldn't use it much.

        Comparability list from dlink

        • On a Nexus 10, quite good. I doubt the TV reception would be that good in a metal bus or train carriage though, and asking the bloke behind to keep the rabbit-ears side on to Mt Lofty might earn me a bit of sarcasm…

        • +1

          @terrys:
I don't think a Nexus 10 counts as a "cheapie", but is compatible.

Installed "OTG?" app to check my cheap devices - reports OTG on $54 Telstra Buzz (ZTE Blade Q lux), which does not support OTG?? I don't believe it. Doesn't recognise memory device via an OTG adapter.

My old single core, 1.2 GHz Cortex-A8 CPU, Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite tablet is incompatible with the apps :-(
(Despite specs stating Android 4.0.3 is minimum requirement, which is on tablet, apps require 4.1. So an upgrade may get device to work. Or a new tablet!)

Reception in a mobile Faraday Cage is always problematic. But rabbit ears would be a conversation starter ;-)

        • @Infidel: I was more refering to the "small screen" :-p. I had just given away the canonical Huawei G526 so couldn't test that, but I don't think that had OTG either. I was under the delusion that OTG was a standard function of Android. :-/

        • @Infidel: "Doesn't recognise memory device via an OTG adapter"
Lollipop mucked up a fair few devices [ My Nexi needed a ~paid~ app:-(] locking out the OTG function and I still haven't got around to sorting out the "6" being unwilling to copy to OTG, tho it will read them - a stinker of a stunt on a device with no SD port!
I guess you're on top of that little glitch by now tho…

        • +1

          @terrys:
Don't know of any sub-$100 phone with OTG. Have the Huawei G526 & Y550 - no OTG.

Noticed apps to enable OTG, but probably won't work on the cheapies. Apparently OTG may be possible in rooted phones.

I don't own any more advanced mobile tech than those, the Telstra Buzz 4G+ & ancient Huawei Mediapad 7 lite - I'm just too bloody frugal :-(

Still, I don't think I'm missing much by not having 📺 on my mobile. I have 2 cheap PVRs (1TB Panasonic from DS sale for $10, other 1TB has 5TB external storage - full) & I hardly watch TV. I'd rather travel.

  • TV Tuner is good. Works well!

  • Just picked up the last Lenovo in Chadstone. Still some left in Moorabbin, Nunawading, Richmond.
Wish I'd seen the D-Link - didn't know about it!

  • I swear to god this is the last time I'm buying anything from Hardly Normal. I should have just driven to the store and bought it there. Place an online Click and Collect (item in stock) on Friday, still no answer the following Tuesday. Serve me right… Last C&C was the next day (CPL).

    • What did the store say when you contacted them?

I've only once had notice of an order ready to collect - after complaining I never was notified. Orders were always waiting for collection after a few hours.

Went overseas for months, then popped into store to find an order I had forgotten about - still sitting on the shelf waiting.

      • +1

Big brother contacted me (online C&C enquiry) informing me they've sent the enquiry to the store, the store email's me minutes later apologising for the wait. Citing the item was on order and only just arrived (7 days from ordering) and is ready to collect. Then another email minutes later from C&C saying it's ready for pick up.

I feel for the floor staff though (sometimes it warranted- annoyed customer/s), you need to go to the Support Desk and as usual there's only one guy, he's on the phone on hold, several staff on the floor avoiding me as i try to get their attention, 5mins passes so I go to the cashier to get things moving, only to be sent back to the Service desk. 15mins after that he hangs up the phone takes that customers AIO PC and puts it on the back shelf has a chat with them then I get served, only to take 10 seconds as he hands over the item and paperwork and now have to go to the cashier.

another 10min wait for another customer and I'm up. She scans the paper work, checks my ID, I sign the receipt and I'm on my way 20 seconds later. So a 30 second done deal takes 25-30mins….

Hardly Normal one of a kind.

Though I'm happy to say watching the NEWS on a tablet/phone at my desk is great and I no longer am on the search for a tv tuner for the PC (shite win10).
