Is OzBargain an Addiction for Anyone ?

Hello Ozbargainers,

I love Ozbargain website and the Ozbargain community. It has helped me a lot on buying various things which were mostly Useful and some unnecessary "Can't resist" things.

Love the forum too which has a lot of useful discussions.

My question to you all are:

  1. Is Ozbargain website an addiction for anyone?
For example for me, I am not sure why but I tend to go to Ozabargain website a lot, sometimes intentionally and sometimes as if its a habit. I wanted to know if it is just me or is anyone else out there too..

  2. What other deal websites you visit often and how does it compare with Ozbargain?

  3. Are you here mostly for deals or you visit forums too?

Thanks for your inputs in advance. Have a good one!

I used to be addicted to the deals but I have found them to have gotten worse as in items I don't care for so I rarely purchase. Mainly forums.

    • Maybe it is just the time of the year where you dont find as many deals..

Christmas is not far away.. Hold on..;)

I start visiting OzBargain 4 years ago when I study my master degree in Melbourne. I went back to my home country 2 years ago, but I still visiting this site almost everyday even though most of the deal is not relevant to me anymore. Well, just to keep the habit when I stay in Australia. It's a wonderful country and I just wanted to keep remind myself about the good memories I had during my study time in Australia.

    • Good on you mate!

The sense of achievement (not just the bargain) after stacking different codes and promotion is very addictive.

      thisss!!! +1000

      • Couponception is my favourite thing!

I have a tendency to type "o" in the address bar every once in a while to check OzBargain to see if there are any new deals.

    • yep only need to type in an o and google knows exactly what I want!

    • Exactly what I do too!!!!!!!!

I visit ozbargain now and then…all the time….day and night…with or without reason….i don't care if its addiction or not…

    • Good for you :)

    Premise of ozbargain :- FOMO

  • +1

Ozbargain..an addiction… you say it like its a bad thing.

  • Yep OzBargain is definitely an addiction, the first year was amazing. These days the stuff I need is a bit more few and far between which can make checking a bit tedious, when the deals do come along though its like "BAM", this is why I save.

  • More of a pastime for me, I do check 2-3 times a day when I have a spare moment just because well why not (plus I'm bored of other sites I used to frequent). On a more functional side I look for deals on stuff I buy anyway, however lately I've been stacking up on microsd cards (who hasn't…) as they are great value paired with a tiny USB adapter doubling as a dongle.

Forums are hit and miss, some great topics there from time to time. I don't really get to browse through them except for the front page topics.

So, not an addiction for me until I need another SD card…

I used to only visit once every few days but I realised that the good bargains usually get taken quickly by you guys, so now it's a few times daily.

  • Hello. My name is Hector, and I am addicted to OzBargain.

  • +1

OzBargain is my Homepage and I refresh it every 5 mins at work so I won't miss on any bargain. If I do miss a bargain, I punish myself by slapping my face 10x for being a slacker. Do you think I have a problem?

    • +1

      NO, thats normal :)

  • +1

The best bargain is not buying anything…

    • +2

Yeah, I ask myself if in 12 months time, I would rather have the money it cost, or the thing I'm thinking of buying. This helps me avoid the worst landfill / most wasteful purchases.

It's still hard to know how really useful something would be until after you've owned it for a year though, particularly for tech purchases - some get much more use than expected, some hardly get used at all. And the quality of furniture is also hard to predict, until you've owned it a year or two (had some sofas and mattresses that have become very uncomfortable with time, from supposedly quality brands, like freedom furniture).

    • +3

But when you have to buy something. Anything. You want to pay the best price for it.

    Needs another option:

I am jv and have an OZB chip inserted in my head to vibrate when a new post/deal is added

The OzBargain website is designed a lot better than other bargain websites. Its clear, you dont have to log in to see the codes, it has a great community section. I have OzBargain bookmarked in my browser, occasionally stray onto other sites to see if I can find more codes for something specific, but otherwise this site has everything I need. And yeah I dont know that id necessarily call it an addiction, but I do check it regularly just to see if I can save a bit of money

It's because Scotty is a web developer and the site is maintained by him, most other bargain sites probably have admins that don't have a background in programming and as such outsource.

      • Oh ok well hes definitely good at what he does and has done a great job with the site. Definitely a winner imo

        • Bookmarked? I have a macro in my g700s mouse, when I press a button it automatically launch OzBargain…

        • @fm: Lol omg I have that mouse aand a special OzB button in it, thats impressive :)

Even though I have taught myself some restraint in purchasing random crap, I still frequent ozbargain for the comments, LOL

  • 1/2 a dozen times a day. I like to think since I started here I haven't spent too much money on frivolous crap.

    I like to think that.

  • +1

My homepage is ozbargain on all my devices!
So every time I go online I have to go through ozbargain!

  • it is to me. it sort of became a mental disorder. lel.

  • +3

I'm not addicted to ozbargain. I just come here when I have time: like lunchtime, dinner time, this time, that time, all the time.. Oh wait! Could I be ADDICTED without knowing it? O.O

  • +1

visit at least every half hour during work hours, on the train to and from work as well =/

  • +1

I'm a google chrome user and had to share my screen for work
I completely forgot about the favourite tiles when you open a new tab and the first one in the list was ozbargain
    Talk about being embarrassed!!

Be careful. While hunting a bargain is a fun activity, living for the hunt is a bad thing. I have seen it consume people and it is a ugly thing. They become ugly.

Hey there - to answer your question:

    1. I need to join OzB Anonymous.
Similar to the posters above, I have it as a short cut on my phone and only have to type in O in the bar.
Depending on my mood, I can go a couple of days between checking, but it's mostly checking 3-6 times/day.
    2. I don't use any other bargain website - OzB has everything I need and I love the layout.
    3. Mostly for deals.
I had been lurking on OzB for ~ 8yrs, and joined 5yrs ago so I could contribute to the community by upvoting.

I thought I'd try contributing to forums but have found most threads become really toxic. Either a thread gets started by some random person with a made-up story (for attention?), or a thread gets hijacked by cowards who thrive on negativity. I feel like the "tone" of OzB has changed. Or maybe I'm just becoming a grumpy old fart. Either way, it's the OzBLyfTiliDie.

Thanks for your response. You fall under the Loyal Ozabargainer category :)

  • +1

Yes I am addicted to OzBargain. And now I've got my wife addicted also, and now my mates also HAHAHAHAHA.

    • Now you say it, I wonder if OzB is a virus (rather than an addiction). Interesting…

      • Hmm probably yes, and unfortunately I don't think there's any cure for it….. Yet

  • +2

I subconsciously open OzBargain when I open the internet :/

  • +3

Before OzBargain I was a huge fan of Buckscoop's website. It posted up deals and vouchers quicker than OzBargain.

I converted to OzBargain because of the helpful comments under each deal. Every time a new bargain is added to OzBargain the community members add constructive criticism such as where the item can be bought cheaper, availability, historic prices, superceded models, upcoming new models, competitor models, comparison reviews, etc.

I don't think BuckScoop offers the same scrutinised analysis and collective research.

The number of scientific minded people on OzBargain is amazing. We have experts in IT, audiophiles, car experts and even aerospace engineers who comment on items like an Aldi Torque wrench.

I am addicted to the kind charitable community members, moderators and the website administrator. Don't like the trolls but they're allowed to be addicted to OzBargain too.

  • As soon as I figured out that not buying anything is more of a saving than buying something that is heavily discounted it felt a lot better to browse OzB regularly. Now I just have a list of things that I need to buy and bookmark things that I don't end up buying but like for future consideration.

Obviously when the deal is magnificent and I happen to gain something out of it I go for it e.g. very good deals for things that start a new hobby (quadcopters), mobile sims, things that save $ over a long period of time like bank deals, electricity providers, referrals and general good advice in the forums and comments.

  • Its a real addiction..the only short term remedy can consist of buying SSDs, eneloops, torches, jerky, etc

  • Scotty must be a happy man to see and read these comments!

      Giggling like a school girl.

hmmmm I just spend 30 mins between looking at ozbargain and researching the deals I like. it's really fun, i like doing this.
But then i realised i did this also while I was supposed to study last week. I'm struggle at uni and need to pass.
why did I waste 30min to save like… $20? when I could have concentrated hard, pass uni, and get a good job and not have to "rely" on ozbargain anymore? just a thought hahaa

  • Perfect example: mod just closed a thread where a person, rather then see a medical practitioner, decided to seek advice on OzBargain for… "Health issue: Pain in chest".

    • I often stare at the "deals" page without remembering when, why or how I opened it.
    • The only constraint for the required specs of any new mobile phone I buy, and the browser I install on it, is how fast and well it will render Ozbargain.
    • People who know me ask me where to buy stuff. They will remind me of bargains I got them ages ago.
    • My house is full of stuff bought due to Ozbargain. Mostly below cost. I feel at least partly to blame for the fall of Dick Smith after stock depletion.
    • I am unofficially in charge of office IT purchases
    • I can tell you the lowest available price and the approximate trending price of any IT product
    • I don't see a way out…

Someone should start up a recovery program.

Hi all. My name is Mumbles … and I have a problem. The last time I viewed OzBargain was 3 hours ago. I cannot remember the last time I paid full retail for an electronic or home entertainment product. It puts a strain on all my relationships since my loved ones always pay full retail for the same items.

"Discussions about shopping with friends often end in arguments, as I find it hard to contain my frustration and condemnation at the silly way they purchase goods. I am unable to prevent my stares of judgemental disapproval when I hear that my friends buy things at RRP, and have never even claimed cashback on anything. They don't even buy things from overseas, and when they do, they hand over currency exchange fees to the bank!".

          Me -sigh.

@altomic: Friend: "And I got it on 5 years interest free! I just have to pay monthly account keeping fees of $5, plus an account establishment fee of $25."
Me: (thinking: "You are paying one third of a $1,000 tv in fees… Great deal!"), saying: "Wow, that's lucky!"
Friend: "Hey, your tv is even bigger than mine! You must have paid a fortune!"
Me: "Uhm, yeah, you probably don't want to know…." (thinking "It was below cost due to pricebeat, required manager's approval, with free gifts worth $400 on redemption. Thanks Ozbargain!")
