HI Guys,
I have been needing a very high-performance pc after my last build (which was 8 years ago!) finally died. So pardon me if my tech talk is not upto speed but I believe this is a damn good build for the price

What you get:
Intel Qaud Core i5 6600 3.9GHz 6th Gen Skylake
H170 motherboard
16gb DDR4 ram 2133Mhz
1TB 7200rpm HDD
240 gb SSD
R9 390 8GB gDDR5 GPU or gtx 970 4gb gDDR5 for $10 more
Optical drive
650W psu (very highly recommend to upgrade to this as bare minimum)

Process
Step 1.
Go here and add this as the base build to your cart:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Qaud-Core-i5-6600-3-9GHz-8G…

Step 2.
Go back to above link, and pick upgrade ram option 8gb->16gb ( or just go here and add to cart http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/161813007301)

Step 3.
Go back to step 1 link, and pick upgrade motherboard option H110->H170 (or add to cart http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162024708825)

Step 4.
Go back to step 1 link, and pick upgrade PSU option 550W->650 Watt Bronze ( or http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/172153389147) Highly recommend you guys to upgrade the PSU

Step 5. Now to add SSD, 240gb - go here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/252624) or here http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sandisk-SSD-Plus-240GB-520MB-s-La…

Please note Step 1-4 is one build, assembled, tested and delivered, step 5 is delivered separately, I was going to use the upgrade option but u/donnot pointed we can save few more $$ if we buy separately

Your final total should read $1579

use the current eBay promotion code from here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/252388)

Your build should now be $1263.20

if you use cash rewards 1.25% cashback, your net build is going to be $1247.40

Those who want the GTX 970 4gb for $10 more (net $8 after discount) use this as the basebuild - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Quad-Core-i5-6600-3-9GHz-8G… rest of the steps are same

This does not come with windows - personally I am going to purchase windows 7 pro key from reddit microsoft market place for $20 USD and get the free upgrade to windows 10 till July 29.

        • Agreed. My point was that I will be using the 16gb to full extent.

        • +2

@CozmerkIsenberg: No problem. That just puts you in a very small percentage of users and hence are using it for much more than gaming or normal home use. Running Virtuals or CAD work maybe or high end photoshop editing? I personally use 32GB at home as well, but I need to run up a heap of virtual servers regularly for work related purposes.
PS: also I did not also realise you were the poster of the original question. If you are fully utilising 16GB, why not jump to 32GB. It is only an extra $100 if you are really pushing the 16GB limit.

        • +2

          @gromit: AutoCAD, CFD, FEA, Revit.

        • +2

          @gromit:
The more ram the more latency that can be introduced. 8GB is still enough for gaming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPenpMMJYEI

        • 3TB? Wow, I've never seen(nor heard of) a computer use/with that much ram before, not with my own eyes anyways…I'm guessing it's like a supercomputer or something of the sorts…?

        • @Zachary: Not really, we have a few of them. old DL980's and some DL580's with greater than 2TB. This is large but relatively common nowadays.

        • @beyondtool: As I said 8GB is more than enough for gaming. Though latency between memory configs is so insignificant that anyone that is taking that into consideration doesn't really understand memory of the effect it actually has on performance.

    • +2

I agree with your premise - not sure why someone negged you … if you want gaming performance then it's better to spend the additional money for 16GB on maor vidya powah.

But sometimes people just want big numbers on a box rather than actual improved performance … so they buy i7 over i5, 16GB over 8, overclock the cpu using an additional heatsink and a motherboard chipset that costs double the price.

And so they get a far inferior video card and suffer the consequences for gaming …

    • +1

For single tasking, I agree that the ordinary user would not benefit currently for more than 8GB of RAM. But if you multitask alot definitely get 16GB of RAM. Browsers with lots of tabs open gobble up enormous amounts of memory, and if you leave the browser open while gaming with background programs like an antivirus and firewall running, hardware related drivers (eg Logitech LCD Manager, email client, Steam (100Mb), etc, you will definitely benefit from 16 Gb of RAM.

  • Anything cheap like the pocket rocket (~$300) a few years ago?

  • So you guys are saying buy this build exactly as listed.

Go with the R 390 GPU instead of the GTX 970.

Stick to 550w PSU? Even though two HDD's the 1TB and the SSD?

Add the additional 8GB ram because its cheap

Download the OS onto a USB and boot?

    • I would go with the upgraded psu but yes rest as you said

    • Stick with the 550W is fine, I just put the parts into pcpartpicker and it says in the top right that if you were using every component of the system under maximum watts (never happens) then it would draw 440W which still leaves you a huge 110W overhead.

      http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/XVzGXH

  • I would also want to upgrade the case (quieter and better looking), so for my money and assuming you don't mind self assembly, then something like this: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/2LXHdC seems better value and more future proof to me.

    • Your build at $1193 total did not include the cost of the R9 390.

  • Bloody hell…. when I went to checkout it shows the 20%off discount. After I paid for the stuff, it only shows 3/5 items in my ebay and I was charged full price! SO now it cost me more for 3 items than it would for 5! WTF ebay?

    • Yes happened to me last night. I got charged full amount for 4/5 items.
Had a massive rant at eBay chat this morning but they wouldn't understand what I was trying to say. My case was escalated and I was sent an email saying I will be refunded the discount amount.
So don't stress just go on ebay chat tomorrow morning

      • Yep, had to put another order for the remains 2 items. What a headache.

    • Same thing happened to me as well. Whole order went into PayPal, but only half the items processed and no discount. Problems seems to be with PP, but gave up after 45min on hold.

    • I went through the same pain. I called eBay support to sort out. They can see how much was charged. They have refunded the discount.

      • Did you call them? I have been told to wait 10-15 business days

        • Yes called eBay. I think they have me a longer time frame but I got the refund lot quicker.

        • @devank: I was also told 10-15 days

  • +1

Damn this is a great price, paid $500 more last year for poorer specs.

  • I'll put an order tonight then thanks heaps! And gonna go with R 390 GPU

  • +1

Unless you absolutely HAVE to buy a gaming PC in the next month I'd be waiting until Zen shakes up the CPU market and AMD and Nvidia's new cards flood the market. In six months time a R390 and 6600 based system is going to look very dated, it's a borderline VR setup. I mean the CPU alone has less overall power than a fully loaded FX8350 CPU and in DirectX12 games that's going to matter within a year. So yes for today it's a great deal, but by the end of the year not so much.

Also great link for system builders and those who want a good price guide: http://www.logicalincrements.com/

    • Agreed, worse time to buy a video card, wait 2 or 3 months so you don't feel … regretful ;)

    • Hi, thanks for your advice however With the new parts coming out,
Would the price be in the same range if we were to wait for these updates? or would we be putting more out of pocket?

      • +1

You'll have the option of getting a similar setup for cheaper, something better for the same price, or paying more for a system that will give you good performance for a long time. And thus is always the way with PC gaming.

A Zen CPU should be around $500 when it lands but will smoke an Intel i5 6600 (2x as fast) and more than likely force Intel to adjust all it's pricing. I'd expect a lower clocked and cheaper Zen offering next year which will upset Intel's mid range CPUs. AMD's 480 will be hopefully go for about $350 in a few months and Nvidia's 1070 is already under overseas $600 on preorders.

  • I want this for the HTC Vive, any thoughts?

  • Got this response re: choosing the brands of the different parts, looks like it's luck of the draw.

"We will choose the parts based on our stock availability. It will be various from time to time."

  • I rang PC Byte yesterday for a few times with at least 1 hour apart during their business hours but got their voice mail on each time. I rang them earlier today to ask some questions on gaming PCs but the guy was not very helpful at all. He then put me on hold for more than 10 minutes. I hang up and didn't call back. I am now reluctant to buy anything from them. Anyone has any feedback on PC Byte's pre and after sales support?

  • Is anyone pairing this up with an affordable monitor? I've been researching AOC, Asus, BenQ etc and it's doing my head in! I only have a budget of $500 and really don't want to exceed this. I'm assuming I need 144hz and Freesync compatible with the R390. Would really appreciate some help guys 👍

    • +1

If you had more than $500, a 27 inch Acer Predator IPS (the Freesync version) is what I would recommend. IPS have better quality than TN (twisted neumatic) displays. Keep clear of Nvidia graphics cards since GSync compatible monitors cost about $200 more than the open spec FreeSync.

The only way you can be completely happy with your computer is to research parts and order what suits your needs rather than purchasing a one size fits all machine. However, this requires time and effort. For web surfing and 2d gaming, any computer will do, but if you are a 3d gamer and/or a heavy downloader with lots of storage requirements, you need to be picky about your GPU, motherboard, PSU and case.

If you pay a bit more, you could get a significantly better and more futureproff machine. At the moment I would recommend a: i5-6600K CPU, 16 Gb of DDRM 2400 MHz (2x8), a Nvidia 1070 GTX GPU (gamers only, when they become available), a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Cooler, a 250 GB Samsung 950 M2 drive, a 2 or 4GB HDD (Seagate, or Western Digital Black if you have the cash).

      • Thanks heap for that. I'll start scanning pricing on the predator I think.

  • +1

With the next batch of GPU coming out soon would this be an option for people still looking to take up the discounted deal at PC Byte?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-6th-Gen-Quad-Core-i5-6600-3…

Still follow the steps as outlined by OP but put in the GPU later when you get it. I'm thinking of doing it but with the 6600K processor and a Z170 motherboard (also upgraded power supply to the gold one 650W and got a different case which was $49). With discount comes in at $941.60. Leaving you time to consider getting the next GPU. Assuming it will be compatible with the motherboard and you are comfortable putting the graphics card in yourself.

    • That's actually a very good idea. I was thinking the same way but didn't find any proper deals like yours.

      Thank you.

  • New message from: pc.byte Top Rated Seller(90,275PurpleShooting Star)
    Hi,

Unfortunately due to the unprecedented volume of orders made across during this eBay promotion, there have been wide-spread delays with all PC system orders. We will try out best to have your system ready and have it shipped asap.

    Regards,

Looks like a bit of a wait

    • Yeah, I received the same reply.

Have you received yours yet? Or has it been shipped?

      • Got mine a week ago

        • Oh nice.

Did they express post it? Also how did the build turn out?

  • +1

I ordered on Monday night 6/06 and received Thursday morning 9/06. Delivery from Sydney to Adelaide. Had an express postage sticker on the box. Even though I just did normal delivery.
Rig is running well. Needed a good screen now.

  • I followed the steps and bought the PC (except 16G RAM). I took almost a week to get it.

    I had few troubles.
First I installed Win 7. Then I installed the drivers came with the PC. All my USBs stopped working! I could use mouse or keyboard. They worked in BIOS mode but not after that. I spent hours trying to solve the issue. Finally I had to put the windows CD and restore back. Then I had to install drivers again but not the USB 3 driver.
I kind of wished I bought the simple Dell where it simply works. If not I can simply make a call and they replace it.

My second complain is that it is too noisy! Possibly it comes with the power but even on silent mode it is noisy. Whole computer table vibrates. Any tips on making is quitter?

    • Is it quieter if the computer is on the floor?

What is making the noise? fans, power supply, hard drive, case

  • What do you guys think about getting the build without the video card:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-6th-Gen-Quad-Core-i5-6600-3…

and pick up the GTX 1070 instead for ~$650? (Was otherwise considering getting the build with the GTX 970)

    GTX 1070 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/252997

  • Now I'm having more trouble. I m trying to install the video driver but the PC is hanging. I have to switch off the power to restart the PC. Video card driver is not installed.!

    • Which video card?

I am now uncertain if I should proceed to checkout because of your issues: noise and installing Windows 7.

I expected to see Nvidia GTX 970!

    • I got Asus H170M plus motherboard and MSI R9 390 graphics card
mine installed fine. Chuck in the disc for the motherboard and then the video card and everything installed smoothly

      • -2

        You got what you bought.
I paid for Nvidia GTX 970 but got Intel HD Graphics 530. I like to think as an honest mistake from their part.

        • +1

Can you actually see that the gtx970 isn't there in the x16 slot? The HD350 is the gpu that's in the skylake cpu. It won't show up on system details until the driver is installed which they couldn't do because the system didn't come with a OS. All you had to do is install a os connect to the internet and drivers for the whole system would of automatically download with some patience

        • How about downloading the latest drivers from Nvidia?
Can you see the card inside the PC?

        • @Dezeption:
Are you associated with them by any chance?

Driver came with the CD failed to install. PC was frozen for at least 30 min. I had to off the power.

        • @devank: no I'm not but no one ever uses the cd drivers cause there most likely outdated. You're making complaints on not bring able to set your pc up and you're the only one.

        • @tencents:
I tried to update the driver through the Nvidia software. It chucked an error saying it can't find the hardware.
I don't want to open the system. I'm worried that they may use that as an excuse to blame it on me.

        • +1

@devank: your case doesn't have a see through window on the side?

Did they give you the motherboard box with hardware used, boxes, books left over parts etc in there to suggest the gtx970 was installed?

Guess you might have to contact pcbyte to see what's going on

        • I dropped the box at their shop two days ago.
Those guys look decent and hard working. So I don't think they would try to take short cuts. I'm sure their reputation is worth lot more than the profit they can make on my PC.
Could be a simple hardware failure causing all the trouble.
Deception - I have reformated PCs at least 20 times in my life time. I buy a PC almost every year (not all for myself). I always use the driver came with the system and then update through their own software or Windows.

        • Got a call from the PC Byte. I was one of the unlucky one. Apparently it is a faulty card. That caused all issues.
I was expecting them to simply change the card, pretend nothing was wrong and blame it on me. But they were truthful.

They said I'll have to wait another week which I'm not happy about. It is already about two weeks since I made the order. They offered to replace it with Gigabyte GTX 970.

        • +2

          @devank:
I guess it's one of those things that are out of their control. Main thing is they accepted it and tried to rectify the situation.

  • Is the brand of the components random or we can specify which we want?

  • Is anyone still waiting for their PC?

  • I just received my PC but Ebay will not honor their CLICKMORE 20% discount.
Did anyone have the same issue?

[eBay system did not apply the discount]. I contacted eBay customer support to confirm my entitlement; otherwise I would not have proceeded with the order. I called eBay four times (25 June x2, 28 June and 5 July) about my refund but eBay customer support kept saying it is with eBay marketing. eBay waited until PC Byte built and delivered (8 July) the PC system then sent their refusal email (9 July) below.

eBay customer support said it was a computer glitch when (1) went through but (2) remained in my basket. I then had to pay again to clear (2) basket. I confirmed the process with eBay customer support because of the issue and they said they will forward it to eBay marketing for refund.

      • I had the same issue, half my order went through the and the discount wasn't applied. 2nd half of the order, I had to put through separate and the discount was applied. I got my refund for the first order about 2 weeks after contacting eBay.

Did they explain why you didn't qualify?

        • I have now received my (1) discount; after I called Ebay last week.
