AskOzB: What's something you used to do to save money, but stopped when you realized it wasn't worth it?

Third part in the series for this Sunday night.
Parts 1 and 2

I'll start us off: I used to spend several minutes scrapping the inside of the jam jar for those very last traces of jam, until I realized that they comprised about 1/100 of the container, which at the price I pay, equates to about 1.7c
I still do it, but now I use a spatula: does the same thing in about 10 seconds.

What yours?

        • That's the thing, they want you to spend $30 on each visit even if it's crap you don't want so not worth it for me on a normal day as I shop at Aldi most of the time. I guess it's situational too. I drive past a Caltex on my way home from work and have a snacks thingy I run at work so the $30 is already covered. I don't go out of my way to get them though.

If, on the other hand, you're going to spend $30+ in Colesworth on a normal shop and you like to go to Wooltex or Shelcol then it's a little bonus, especially if you're a big family and all savings count, even $2.

        • for me, getting the vouchers is the easy part. i either find them in trolleys, at self-serve checkouts or at work

        • @JayM:
If the price is higher at a colesworth servo … usually 2c more.. then your massive boost to the home budget may be a lot less…

Share housing. I used to flat share to save money but realized just chipping in the extra $100 per week to rent a place to myself is worth every cent.

i've the same attitude towards commuting to work. sure, public transport is cheaper but having my own car means i don't have to put up with leg spreaders, human ashtrays, phone squawkers and giant swinging backpacks of doom. nor do i have to wake up earlier to allow for the time it takes to get to the bus stop, the actual bus ride (twice as long as driving) and walking to work.

sometimes you just can't put a price on comfort and having your own space.

    rip coke rewards :(

Still on the fence about this - but handwashing dishes vs stacking the dishwasher and running when full.

I live on my own, so if I stack the dishwasher I would run it once, maybe twice, a week. Compared to washing by hand everytime I eat.

What I've noticed is that it takes a bit of time for hot water to actually flow, so a large amount of water is wasted each time I need to wash something. The flip side is the dishwasher will use electricity to heat the water plus the cost of dishwashing tablets is more than dishwashing soap/liquid.

The time saving as well is another benefit.

      For my dishwasher Electrolux 330

      • 3L of water for the initial cold rinse.
      • 4L of water for the hot wash
      • 4L of water for the rinse

Total 10-15L (roughly the size of the average kitchen sink)
      Electricity: 1-1.5Kw

      • Thanks for the details.

I wouldn't fill the sink each time, but at least half way. So a half full sink 7 days a week quickly adds up, not factoring in the wasted cold water at the start each time.

I guess electricity balances out slightly as the hot water service would have to replenish the depleted water.

    Mine Bitcoins

    • +1

I used to mine Litecoins using the HD7970 I'm using now. My housemate did it with 4 of them.

Bitcoins are essentially out of ordinary people's reach to mine. By the time you get the hardware, the company who sells them has "trialled" them for a month or two, gotten their coins out of them and sends it to you. By that time, there's already new hardware out.

Haircuts with clipper in the bath, made me look more of an idiot than normal.

  • Coles insurance. (Car or home) they take forever to get anything fixed.
Car got fixed after 3 months. Home got fixed after 1 year.

    • holy hell that's terrible. :S

Are they really that much cheaper?!

      • Yes they are a lot cheaper but the moment you need them that's when you know why they are cheaper. Not worth the headache and frustration. Go to their Facebook page and see what I mean. I'm not the only one with this experience.

  • maintenance jobs around the house, easier to get a professional to do the job right the first time and not having to buy tools you would never use again

Buying stuff I need from Asia to save a few dollars and then waiting a month for it to arrive.

    Survey sites,

    Cashback sites,

Selling odds and ends on eBay to make $2 profit.

    • +1

Totally agree with selling odds and ends on eBay to make a $2 profit.

We combine this with the reduce, reuse and recycle principle.

E.g. we resisted buying a lot of baby clothes even though we could easily afford it. Brother has handed down his, and when our baby and the next outgrows these, they go straight to Vinnies. Giving stuff away, including the ones we've bought, makes us feel good and saves wasting time.

I used to travel by only one mode of public transport i.e. bus and used two buses to reach home/work. I used to do it even though there was a better connectivity and lesser wait time using bus+train than that with bus+bus, more so in peak hours. I did it to save some money since when you use two different modes you spend about $2 or so more in every trip than what you spend using the same mode throughout your trip. I later realized that saving of $2 or say $2.5 isn't worth waiting for 35 minutes or 40 minutes at bus stops in cold, dark evenings - especially when you need to travel during off-peak hours only 3-4 times a week and that too only one way. So, now I end up spending roughly $8 or so more per week than I did before, but I can spend more time at home and I don't have to get bored at bus stops waiting for (generally) late buses in windy winter evenings.

  • Used to visit to the shop instead of in or out-call, but then realised that its totally not worth the money

  • Hello outlander.

Even from the PB, you'll see this. No doubt.
If the Penalty Box is anything like a pizza box, I hope that Scotty has left at least a bit of cheese stuck to the lid, in order that you don't starve…
    You silly bastard.

Alerted by JJB to goings on here and there on down. Thread comments in the notifications from 'B99', were 'interesting'.
From Princess Pug's very odd comments there and elsewhere, I figured that you managed to hack her account, as well.
Another one too, I have now gathered.

Incidentally, your comment in a certain closed thread, directed at me, almost deserved an upvote from me, but I decided on the halfway measure of hacking Scrooge McDuck's account, instead..
It just seemed like a good idea, at the time…

Outlander - even if The Mods don't end up showing you any mercy, don't do anything further loopy - or self-destructive.

BTW, if l'm Ned Flanders, JJB and Wiki are presumably Homer and Marge, with you as Sideshow Bob..?

    Don't be Sideshow Bob.

    Now, if you'll excuse me. I have a cookie-duster moustache to comb…
Oh, and Okely-Dokely, Neighborino? I hope so.
    :-{)

    • BTW, if l'm Ned Flanders, JJB and Wiki are presumably Homer and Marge, with you as Sideshow Bob..?

If I'm Homer, then wouldn't you have to be :b

      • No, you little shit!
Do say hello to Marge, though…

        • Lol! You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.

        • +2

I was certain that there was an early episode of The Simpsons where McBain said the word 'Sauna!', before shooting everyone wearing a towel…

          Alas..

I did find these clips, though…
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjHBMRMSlm4

You might enjoy this one, a little more..
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhvLG8JD52M

Maybe you're not Homer after all, and maybe I'm not…
          Disappointing.
          I really like Ned.
          :-(

Wiki is definitely a Simpson, though. In her yellow nirvana.
As you maybe implied last weekend, Bart and Lisa personalities reversed, in case of the J-Twins…

The real Ned Flanders will no doubt have you in his prayers, in relation to that

Mercy for a certain character, I see.
You can keep him occupied /vice-versa.
I will be entirely occupied /not-on-ozbargain.

From… Now! Third time, really lucky.
Take it easy and try not to let too much trouble find you this week.
          :)

        • @Tas:

No pm's and no comments make outlander something something..

Incidentally, your comment in a certain closed thread, directed at me, almost deserved an upvote from me, but I decided on the halfway measure of hacking Scrooge McDuck's account, instead..

I try and include everyone in the fun. I'm generous like that

Take it easy and try not to let too much trouble find you this week.

One day you must tell me what it is that you find so troubling. Until then, to keep it interesting I will read your tasitudes as if they had mildly threatening undertones.

aside: I've always seen myself as more of a Herman Hermann
