    No, it's easiest to understand with an example. 'A' (eg. 110) is 10% higher than 'B' (100). 10% lower than 'A' would then be 99 (100 would be 9.0909…% lower)

    "A Is 10% Higher than B, Does It Mean B Is 10% Lower than A?"

    Therefore:
    A = B + 10% x B
    A = 1.10 x B
    A/1.10 = B

    With example A = 100:
    A = 1.10 x B
    100 = 1.10 x B
    100/1.10 = B
    B = 90.9090

    B therefore does not equal 10% lower than A (which would be precisely 90).

    QED.

      if A is 10% higher than B, what % is B lower than A?

      • +3

        Not enough. I'm after 15% minimum discount, more for cash.

      • A = 1.1B
        B = A/1.1
        B = 0.90909A

        In % terms, B is lower by:
        = (A-B)/A x 100%
        = (1-0.90909)/1 x 100%
        = 9.091%

    It can be if you ask an accountant

    Isn't a poll a rather roundabout way to get your maths homework done? :)

    Fun side fact:
    x% of y = y% of x

    Example: Finding 18% of 50 can also be calculated by doing 50% of 18. Both equal to 9.

      Because A * B = B * A. Elementary, dear Watson.

      • Pretty much. It's obvious when you think about it, but not many would realise to do this.

    Next step is the share market conundrum ;).
    If I buy BHP at $20 and the shares go up $40, I make 100% profit. However I buy BHP for $40 and they go down to $20 I only make 50% loss!

      Or alternatively, I buy at $40 and they go down to $20 … 50% loss. But, I need a 100% improvement to recover my money!

    • please solve this conundrum ..

  • If you post a simple maths problem on OzBargain, are you allowed to hand up any of the responses as your maths homework?

    10% changes depending on the number

  • Depends what it is. A comparison between a percentage (eg 60% vs 70%) or ranking (eg 10th vs 11th) is different to an absolute comparison (eg $10 vs $11).

  • This issue applies to every single item with GST. B is basically 10/11 (ten elevenths) of A which means it's 1/11 (one eleventh) lower = 9.09091%

  • where's the 420 option?

  • how many people here thought it was "Yes" at first then after seeing the comments decided to hitchhike with the crowd and comment how ludicrous this question is?
    A: <10
    B: >10, <50
    C: >50
