I bought the U8 not long ago for USD5.79 with the 100 EB points.

only thing with these watches is DO NOT USE THE ANDROID APP that it links to on the qcode sheet that comes with it.. the app has been reported as sending info and photos to an FTP address in China.

Best to use the mediatek app from the google play store.

    • -1

Does your watch take photos now?

      • +3

The app sits on your Android phone, and can silently do whatever it wants. I bought a cheap chinese 'smart-watch' a while back, and threw it out when I looked at the app on the play store. It needed permission to access pretty much everything (browser activity and bookmarks!?) so I ditched it.

        • +3

Far from unusual for Android apps in general to require permissions for pretty much everything.

          @Jabba the Hutt:

          That is very true.

        • +1

The feature lists on these things require that sort of access…
In more recent versions of Android you can tweak the permissions manually if you really don't like the default access.

        • removed double post.

          @Jabba the Hutt:
Edit: I've had the OG and Pebble Time apps, as well as Android Wear, and the permissions required by this unknown Chinese developer far exceeded either of them, and the watch had fewer functions.

There was no way I was opening up my entire phone to a random Chinese server(s).

        • @scubacoles:
And control privacy settings in previous Android versions by rooting and installing xprivacy.

I took pics of a place where the sun never shines. I guess they should be alright to be seen by some corrupt chinese official. Maybe they can buy some property there too.

      • This too can cost you money!

  • +2

Your daughter is going to be so disappointed.. but at least you didn't blow decent money on one!

I was thinking along the same lines - this thing won't change my life and no one really needs one. It's not even a "real" smartwatch, you can't install apps on it. But then I thought, if kids grow up playing with them (as cheap and rubbish as they may be), they'll be the ones eventually finding new uses for technology and improving it. So yeah, give these to kids, let them play and experiment. Bring on the future.

    • my daughter is 8.

      • Yeah, she'll still be disappointed.
I'll be surpriused if it stays on her wrist for more than a fortnight and completely shocked if she's still wearing it after a month.

        • Then she can get a job and by something else. I'm amazed how much parents spoil their kids now days. They must be such un-appreciative shit heads.

        • @PainToad:
          Buy*

  • Should change the title to Smartwatch for KIDS. No adult will wear this CRAPPY watch.

  • Which is better the U8 or U80? You can answer calls with the U8 can you do the same with the U80?

    • +1

The U80 is 10X better than the U80*

*This is an attempt at an joke. No idea of the actual difference.

  • I wish Google made Android Wear opensource. Atleast then the UI on these cheap watches wouldn't be shitty.

  • +1

For $9 I am not sure what you guys expected?

It can do message notification, stop watch, calculator, heart rate monitor, phone book receive calls, etc etc…. for $9.

    • +2

The watch doesn't control satellites. No deal.

  • Some of those Smart Watches with the round faces look quite nice. Does anyone have any particular recommendations in the $100-$200 range?? Or are they all just toys?

  • It comes to $8.66USD; seems to have moved up in price

    • updated description:

don't use the coupon. just make a new account and buy via the mobile site. use 100 EB points and 2% mobile site discount and it's US$5.63

      • First time in OzBargain history…would've been better off waiting…I purchased when the deal was posted. Got ripped $1.20 ;)

Got mine today works great, will come handy when I am on the bike.

Installed the Smartwear app from the Play store as the recommended app wasn't pushing my notifications and texts, so all good now.
