I'm just imagining some person around the world having the exact same numbers you just provided. Wonder what's the possibility of that happening.(+_+)

      • +59

Wow he almost got my details correct except mine ends in 31 not 13 - close call huh?

      • +1

The number has 13 digits, so it's not a valid CC number. Fails the Luhn algorithm checksum as well.

        • +4

          17 digits.

        Promise that this is genuine?

        • +1

No one cares about peanut money

    • No wonder, your credit card is invalid - it doesn't conform to the Luhn Algorithm.

      • +18

And how will my grandmother read it?

      • +21

Umm…if you clicked the link, the book is offered as a PDF, DOC & AudioBook. Can't cover many more formats than that.

        • +22

Why bother clicking the link and double-checking to make sure they've got all of their facts in order when they can just get up on their high horse and invoke one of the most loathsome ideas being thrown around lately: Nanny State?

Helping people avoid scams is a worthy goal and it also has the potential to save money because you don't have to waste valuable police resources to investigate ineffective and unsuccessful scams.

        • @Juddy:

Oooh…gonna have to up vote this.

        • -5

Helping people avoid scams is a worthy goal and it also has the potential to save money because you don't have to waste valuable police resources to investigate ineffective and unsuccessful scams.

LOL. I can think of a million things they could do to SAVE OUR MONEY but they waste it indiscriminately and the SAVINGS are just pocketed, never passed on to the taxpayer.

I bet this scam won't make the book
          http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2015/08/all-goods-bought-overseas-…

          Or this one
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_contribution_to_the…

          Or this one
          http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/myki-upgrade-to-sl…

Or the a million other taxpayer-fuded scams - past, present and future - designed to enrich the FEW on the backs of the MANY http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-04-02/holden-reveals-billion… As if any savings are passed on to the long-suffering taxpayer! The insiders get it all. On YOUR back.

And you are talking about silly corrupt police force saving a few cents by not having to 'deal with' customers who have been ripped off by small-time rip-off merchants that will never have a hope of competing with Government Scams? Hilarious!

What we have here is a clash of ideologies: someone who believes in The System (you) and another who knows The System is designed to enrich the few insiders enjoying their cushy jobs PRETENDING to care for your welfare (while you pay their outlandish salaries) and we all pay for their unaccountable power-trips (both in dollars and lives).

        • +1

@cheepwun: How is any of this related to a book which is supposed to help people identify and avoid scams? Did you even bother to read it? Or even skim it? Or are you worried it is full of pro-government propaganda? Additionally, while those links you posted could be argued as wastes of taxpayers monies they aren't necessarily scams.

Did I say I trust the system? No. I can just differentiate between things I should be concerned about and things I shouldn't. I don't just lump all of my criticisms into a pile and randomly throw them out every chance I get.

I don't see the terrible waste in informing people about the variety of common scams. The idea it is an example of the jackbooted Nanny state striking again is absurd.

        • -1

when a bunch of filthy politicians collude with corporate interests to steal from the nation's purse, what is this but a SCAM? And they can do that without the help of corporations too.

Oh, because it happens 'legally' (with laws that they write) it's not theft all of a sudden? They know exactly what they can get away with (murder) and that's what they get away with.

Consider this: The public is getting a book about scams from the biggest scammers. Hilarious if it wasn't so tragic. How much did we pay for this scam? More unaccountable taxpayer funds to swindle the masses with, while the authors of the thing continue raking in our money.

If you need a book to tell you what is a scam and what isn't, you are lost.

I don't see the terrible waste in informing people about the variety of common scams. The idea it is an example of the jackbooted Nanny state striking again is absurd.

You don't see the tremendous waste because it's hidden. This is a perfect example of Nannying. And the Nanny is pretending to care for your welfare. Simple question: how much of our taxpayer money went into this publication? I bet that can't be answered. Another bunch of unaccountable nonsense. The few will profit on the many sheep (and continue to).

This publication was far from free, and only morons need to read it.

        • @cheepwun:tl/Dr, from your first sentence the only issue with the ACCC is they don't have enough resources

        • @cheepwun:

Goodness ….. are you getting monthly commissions from Nigeria?

        • +1

from your first sentence the only issue with the ACCC is they don't have enough resources

Yes, the toothless tigers should get more taxpayer funds to be unaccountably irresponsible with. That's the way. The more money we throw at it, the better it will get. Hope you've had the capacity to digest this response in one sitting.

        • Goodness ….. are you getting monthly commissions from Nigeria?

No, I'm a State Employee, sucking the taxes out of the public for my cushy job. I'm justifying my department's ridiculous spend with toy publications for the Unwashed Clueless.

And when your elderly relatives get scammed and you dont get a juicy inheritance, you will be screaming at those same "overpaid pen-pushers" to have done something to prevent this.

      • And when your elderly relatives get scammed and you dont get a juicy inheritance, you will be screaming at those same "overpaid pen-pushers" to have done something to prevent this.

Hilarious. The last thing I want is nannying by the filthy gov.

    • +1

Gee ….. thanks for that. We are not all as clever as you.

Your post is far more revelatory than the nonsense from Nanny.

      • +1

Your post is far more revelatory than the nonsense from Nanny.

At least you're calling her Nanny, which is what she is. A preposterously overpaid one. Yes, revelatory. We should all try to aim for that.

As a high school teacher, would I have Broden'd this if I were to order a full class set (26) for my Year 10 Commerce class?

    • +11

Not at all, no one here on Ozbargain with half a brain needs this book — it'll be much better used to further the education of your students.

It's not like you're getting a bunch and flipping them for profit, which is what I think of when I hear broden.

      • +1

Show them how to get cheap phone credit and Port from carrier this is the biggest scam they and their parents face

    • Don't kids all have computers or iPads at school these days? If so why not just download the pdf and distribute.

      • Not sure if you're joking or serious there.

        • He is serious, and I'd say most private schools probably do.

  • +16

Thanks op, ordered 50 to resell.

    • hey broden I've reported you for sock puppeting

      • Please don't! I'll send u some local ladies for cheap.

  • +2

Too old now. Will not even have the guy who calls on behalf the ATO saying that I am under survallaince and will be prosecuted if not given codes for Apple iTunes cards or something around these lines. Never have him to finish his script. Also, would not contain info on taking care of your wallet after the invention of the paypass/paywave so that someone doesn't use them for a few minutes and return them to the wallet.

  • Plot twist: This gets Ozbargain'd and they don't deliver. That would be fun

    • +1

lol or the government now has something else to blame the deficit on.

  • +2

Im surprised Gumtree is not listed in the book.

  • +1

    ABC's 'The Checkout' dubs it a ' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihQ1CxY_CGg '

  • +2

Got this the last time it was posted. It's nothing special: imagine an A5 pamphlet.

If you don't need it (e.g for parents), save the resources!

  • Can we post it to the people who "like and share this page to win a brand new Audi" from Audi. Auustralia page. I've liked and shared and never win :(

  • +4

    Wheres GearBest in the list?

  • Amazon US link???

  • +4

I'm surprised JV hasn't popped by to ask
"Where's the deal? Isn't this always free?"

    • +4

Maybe JV wrote the book? It has lots of bold scattered throughout.

  • +1

    OMG ACCCC!!!

  • +3

Thanks OP. Ordered 50 copies for my fireplace.

    • the previous edition emitted weird fumes when burnt. I had to throw away all the ones I ordered for that reason. So you may want to try one first before you waste heaps.

  • About once a year, I receive a 419-type scam by actual mail, not email. Last one had an Irish stamp on it, and I checked the address on Google street view - the return address was to a police station in Ireland! Perhaps someone in the lock-up?

Anyone else received scam offers by actual mail?

    • Wow, how patient are they?

    • +1

funny that you assume it wasn't a cop.

  • +7

    My dad will need this.

    • Same. I ordered because we got done by a Cryptolocker virus :(

    • what's his phone number

  • -4

Seriously what a waste of taxpayers money… But guess the oldies could use them..

  • +3

Thanks, requested a copy to give to the oldies

  • I'm after the Harvey Norman edition, labelling us "professionals".

  • +1

    downloaded pdf copy to read.

  • +1

Ahhh .. but is it SAFE to download the book or is this yet another CLEVER RUSE by someone in Nigeria .. :-) .. !!

  • Thanks OP - got a copy for my parents.

  • Are we sure this is genuine?

    • We'll only know after we pay the back taxes on it…

      • We'll only know after we pay the back taxes on it…

That's already been 'taken care of'. Taxes stolen. Taxes spent.
Overpaid pen-pushers looking for the new scam. Or just the same thing in a different year.

  • Some Indian ran into the back of my car the other day when I was stationary. We exchanged details. Later that night I get a phone call from an Indian call center saying I had recently had an accident and they required all my details such as credit card number to get my claim started etc. Hung Up. Coincidence?

    • +7

      those Apaches are cunning.

  • -1

This is just a scam to phish your name, address and email

  • +4

ACCC complaint process is a scam as nothing is ever done about dodgy companies eg Smarthome Australia.

  • +1

This is always free is someone going to post this in 6 months again?

  • +4

Is is hardcover? I don't read those nasty softcover books, it's like mixing with a commoner by association.
