AC68U for $176. I'm very happy! Was already planning to upgrade from the N56U and the AC68U has been on my things to buy list for a while. I was going to purchase it from PC Case Gear for $228 along with some other things so thank you for saving me $52!

    • I have the n56u. Stats wise the R7000 seems to outperform the AC68U in range. I'm now not sure which one to buy. Everyone seems to like the Asus.

      • The thing is Telstra Cable modem Gateway MAX is Netgear already. And it hasn't impressed me one bit so no more Netgear for me. ASUS 100%

        • Thanks, I'll most likely wait for NBN and see which deals are on then.

      • My plan is to replace the N56U with the AC68U as the main router and move the N56U to the back of the house to extend the range to the backyard. I've never had an issue with ASUS but I have with Netgear so that made my decision easy. Both appear to be excellent routers though. :)

        • Yep, you will have absolutely no issues with AC68U, it's an awesome router!

  • Thanks op, just got the AC68U as well, excited to try out the Merlin firmware and USB 3 port with download master.
Hopefully this router will give me more features than my current router -TPlink W8980.

  • Are these worth the extra $55 over the TP-Link Archer D7?

    • And compared to the D9 for $196?

  • I just bought this as alot of other people seem to have - two weeks ago - pricematched at OW for $237 I recall. So out of pocket ~$60 darnit with this deal…

I have to say though the range on this router isn't as great as I'd expected. I've moved into a new house and it covers most of upstairs (not all unfortunately) but probably only half of downstairs. I need an AP methinks but was hoping this would do the job.
I found my 2yr old billion (forget the model but was around the $120 range) has the same range as this.

Any recommendations for a good AP. House is bigger than average (110sq) so think i need a couple of these. (Powerlines don't work - different circuits).

    • Sounds like you have a big house. Just get a set of EOP where you know the circuit is shared and hook another Access Point to it.

I suggest one per floor, centre of the house if possible, as close as you can. That's all it takes really.

No one AP can cover the whole house with 2 floors.

      • Thx Neon. I've tried placing the existing router in the middle of upstairs (all upstairs is on one circuit as far as I know) hence why I think I need an AP for downstairs.
The other option which i've already discussed is to have an electrician come in & cable up the downstairs area's which need ethernet connectivity - that way i can add another wifi router or AP there.

        • Nps yeah labour isn't cheap so unless you prepare to pay I wouldn't bother. EOPs and a spare wireless access point are both cheap. Just need some more power

You can reuse old routers disable DHCP and NAT, use it like a dummy switch only give SSID. Only thing is your device needs to reconnect to the stronger signal one

  • Looks like Futu > Wireless1. No wonder their shop closed in Parra

  • so which is better the R7000 or ASUS RT-AC68U ? with all the discussion it appears even. ASUS say theirs is the fastest of all?

    • +3

From what I read, the chipsets are more or less identical, however the firmware of the Asus puts it ahead.
      I went the Asus.

      • Spent a long time yesterday making this comparison. Also went with the Asus mainly because the software seems to be better than the netgear. Also because I own a netgear modem/router and I'm not very impressed.

    • Go with AC68U!

  • So I am upgrading from my good old 6 year old billion 7800n. Currently on ADSL2+ with plans to upgrade to NBN in future. Question I have is - am I better off with a router and continue to use my billion (modem only) or scrap billion and go with a modem/router instead?

    • I reckon get either one of these routers with the aim to phase out the Billion.

No point having modem functionality when you're eventually on the NBN.

      • +1

You'll need a VDSL2 modem to connect to the NBN via FTTN or FTTB. The billion won't cut it unless you are connecting via FTTP.
        See : http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

Also if you are intending to use VOIP (there is no dedicated VOIP port), you'll need to get a VOIP handset or VOIP phone adapter (to use a normal handset).

        • Yeah it completely depends on which service you can get!

    • I'm in the same boat, currently on ADSL2+ but with the option to move to FTTN :)

Decided to get the D7000 as it has VDSL & VDSL2 (7800n only has VDSL) and it means use of only a single device for a FTTN/ADSL2+ connection. Also even though the Billion is working fine for now, who knows how long it will last.

If you do get the D7000 see my link above that includes a 64GB USB for an additional $8.

  • I'm thinking of using this to bridge from my Netgear dgnd3700 v2 modem router because i need a stronger wifi signal. THe Netgear wifi doesn't penetrate to the furthest parts of my home.

Anybody have any experience upon using this router in the context of improved Wifi signal strength?

  • +2

Not sure why manufactures cannot put 8 LAN ports into these routers :(

With more and more people getting home networking done, it should be standard by now instead of being depending on another switch.

    • +1

Because you can get a cheap TP-link for under $25, gives you another 8 ports Gigabit with power saving mode. Not everyone builds a test lab or hard wire that much at home

  • Will this solve my Sonos problems?

  • Got the Asus just plainly from good review..

  • Just a side note here…

I asked Futu about the warranty for the RT-AC68U, and they said 2 years provided by Asus Australia.

Whereas Wireless1 have 3 years on their listing.

    • I asked Futu the same - they replied 3 years Asus warranty. I think they must have thought I was you as they mentioned that the 2 yr stated earlier was a typo lol.

  • Thanks! Bought the ASUS RT-AC68U to improve the wifi at home. Was torn between the D7 or the AC68U but I figure I could do with superior wifi at home. :)

  • +1

Wow! AC68 sold out at Futu! And Wireless1 has dropped the price to $220.

    • You bet wireless 1 could not sell any units because futu cheaper. That's how competition works and we need of this kind

  • Need help!
I am using dlink 868l, should i upgrade to this one, or it doesn't make much difference?
    Brought the dlink 3years ago.

  • Do anyone know what the hardware revision of the Asus AC68U is , if its Rev C1, its with the latest dual core 1Ghz instead of dual core 800 Mhz and also shielded USB 3.0 port resulting in much higher USB read write speeds

    • Would like to know as well.

How much faster is the USB 3.0 port on the REV C1 compare to the older model?

    • Apparently C1 isn't available in Aust?

    • I bought one just last week from MSY (different retailer I know) and it's a A2.

    • Definitely 2. Bought mine ages ago and got A2 :)

      • For those who might be interested, I pickup my router today and confirm that its a Rev C1. model :D , such a bargain and delivery was very fast as well.

        • Vash12 who did you buy from?

        • +1

          @stemcell:

          Futu online

        • I also got the C1 model last week from Wireless1 eBay. :-)

        • @hiluke:

          Yep so did i.

  • So wait, this isn't a modem router? This is just a wifi router? That needs to be plugged into a separate modem?

    • Yes - these are just routers. What adsl modem would pair nicely with this and maintain performance. I've alway has asdl modem routers (2-in-1). I'd prefer to have just one box. Are there benefits in splitting it?

      • The D7000 is a Modem Router that will work on any NBN technology (FTTN/FTTB/FTTP) & also ADSL2+

  • Can anyone recommend me which one would be best?
Currently getting FTTN installed and tpg are supplying me with a free modem.
However in roughly 6 months i'll be moving to another house which apparently will be getting FTTH.
I Will be connecting 3 comps, 3-5 mobiles and 3-4 gaming consoles.
I do NOT need voip as well.

    • Either of the R7000 or RT-AC68U would do. Performance wise they are pretty much identical IRL. Go for the look I guess :p

  • Just grabbed the modem/router combo, using Cash Rewards as well for an extra few $s offl. Needed to upgrade for streaming video around the house and have 11 devices all up that connect too. Our 3 year old Netcomm is struggling now. Thanks OP!

  • any good deals on an AC-wifi adapter? which brand is best for its price?

  • Damnit!! Looks I will be compelled to buy the Asus router after all!
I have a FTTP connection..and currently using Netgear WNDR3800 which I think has seen better days.
Problem is, my current laptop doesn't support AC connectivity and I have a PC which I'd rather connect through ethernet (mostly because of online gaming). Would getting a AC router give almost (if not similar) connectivity to the PC? If so..can anyone suggest a suitable PCI WiFi card to go with the AC router?

    • If you purchase the RT 68U, there's the Asus PCE-AC68 which would pair beautifully with the router, pricey though. However there are older Asus PCI cards that have AC I think.

  • Man they posted it quick! Bought it on the Wednesday and collected it from the Post Office on Friday!

Extremely happy with it and damn does it look good!

  • Guys, I just a newbie with these modem/network things. I got this router last year, and I still wonder that do i need to set up or configure anything? I just plug my modem to the router, install the driver and then connect all devices to the 5G network?
Should i set up or change anything to utilize the router's benefits?

Please give me some advice, thank you very much.

    • I hope you at least set up password for your wifi. Your neighbours might rather you not thought :)

      • I did, but I can tell that the connection is not as strong as i expect. drop out, lags and disconnection.

        Any advice pls?

  • It doesn't look like the R7000 comes with a Sandisk microSD card 16GB.
Can't find it on the page and I received mine yesterday. No card in the package

  • +1

Got it for $166 from OfficeWorks. Thanks

    • You got lucky to be able to get OW to pricebeat an ebay coupon deal. Which OW was it?

  • Just signed up for Optus cable who will be supplying a Netgear CG3000V2 which I assume the wireless will not be very good. Not set up yet to test speeds but I feel like I should jump at buying the ASUS RT-AC68U at this price before the deal expires. Has anyone had experience using the ASUS RT-AC68U for cable internet?
