  • Ozbargain thought I was associated with you TA when I went to vote.

      • What's the difference between D7 and C7? Which one is more premium? Also, does this ADSL2+ modems work with NBN or cable internet too?

        • C7 is only a router not ADSL modem.

If you are using NBN or Cable you have to get a router.

        • @superforever: So you mean that D7 won't work for NBN or Cable? and does C7 work for ADSL2+ though?

        • @virhlpool:

D7 will also work with NBN/Cable. Check the photo you will have to connect the LAN/WAN port to the NBN/Cable modem but you will have only 3 LAN ports left if you don't mind.

  • D7 or D9?

    • +1

Are you asking yourself that question?

      • +1

Nah he wasn't looking for a hero to save him he's already superforever.

D9 if money is no object however unlikely that you will have more real world benefit than the D7.

        • lol … I am not sure really worth pay $80 more for D9?

I am using TPG and 3-4km from Exchange.

If the wireless cover is good I may not need another access point.

Not too big two storey house.

        • @superforever: I feel sad that you live in a storage… I hope you at least have a dunny.

        • @fm:

          :p

        • @superforever:
Wifi on D9 is much stronger, but D7 has worked ok on several 2 story houses, but full brick and concrete normally requires an AP.

  • +1

I have one of these. It's rock solid. Never had to reboot it. Never loses sync. Great speeds over garbage lines a long way from the exchange. Covers my whole house and front yard, but ended up with a Ubiquiti AP for the back yard.

    • yeah i have had one for a year or 2 and agree, never an issue, never have to reboot, has quite a good wireless range that covers our whole house (which is pretty big) and i dont get lag gaming on xbox one wirelessly

    • My son had a few friends around for a Lan Gaming session and I didn't bother plugging them into the switch as the wireless was fine . I'm ~5km from the exchange and it's as fast as any other good modem I've had .

  • Have a netgear one about 5 years old. Time to upgrade

  • I would have bought this but I upgraded from ADSL to cable. There's no turning back

    • Agree! Went from 4 Mbps ADSL to 100 Mbps cable.Never going back to ADSL.

      • :(

Cable isn't available in my area (nor is NBN)

        I can't wait.

      • Totally, I was a Billion fan since 2004. Did not get cable until 2015. So that's 11 years on ADSL/ADSL2+

  • A very good router indeed. Hvae been using it for over a year now. Never gave me any problems.
But just note that if you have a Mac, the wireless printer controller software does not work on EL Captain.

Good modem/router but be wary as it doesn't support AP mode/wireless bridging. It will demand to be a DHCP server.

Probably won't apply to most, but if you're thinking of using it as an access point or something probably best to avoid this router.

    • Thanks for the info. This means you won't be able to disable DHCP?

  • I bought this during the last deal. Just a warning, it doesn't work with fibre NBN (despite the box saying NBN ready). Which reminds me, I still need to return it…

    • Why wouldn't it? Did you configure it to run in WAN mode?

    • of cause it does support fibre NBN, I think you don't know how to setup, and it's not VDSL modem so only works as router for FTTN/FTTB NBN

      • +1

Sorry should have clarified, doesn't work with FTTP NBN.

        • That's all I needed to know

        • I think you mean it doesn't work with FTTN (Fibre to the Node) NBN. AKA crappy Liberal copper NBN. As has been pointed out above, you need a VDSL modem router for that, and this is ADSL only.

FTTP would work fine as you only need a router.

        • @Dudeface:

Well it doesn't work with FTTP for me…

        • @nexus4: I Bought this Modem last sale also, works great for me, I have FTTP NBN.

I am with Optus, I had to use the Optus supplied modem to get the NBN connected, then just unplug that crappy modem and plug this one in.

        • @Dudeface:

Just to clarify I have this with FTTP and it works fine. Took me a few minutes to setup.

  • Anyone used the media server feature to play files served over an attached USB HDD? If so what media player / streamer are you using?

    • +1

Its a tad flakey especially for music, plug in $45 raspberrypi with openmediavault & plex server. the usb on D7 doesnt have enough current to power a raspberrypi and usb hdd.

      • Thanks for the info!

  • -1

It doesn't work with FTTB. Only work with FTTP!

    • -2

      It doesn't work with FTTP.

      • Wow toomany confusion. So if it does not work with fttn and fttp then it is not really nbn ready, is it? Or i should say it does not work with nbn?

        • It does work with FTTP. I am using it with FTTP

    • If the connection terminates with ethernet it will work.

  • +3

If you get D9, then get the promo item RE210.

  • Bought this for $170 last week. Oops.

  • +1

I have a 5-year old, $50 router which never troubled me. What are the advantages of upgrading to this one? Non-techy guy here.

    • +2

Better range and security if your modem is really dated. Honestly at ADSL2+ speeds you won't see much if any difference. There is no need for 802.11ac.

      • I have ADSL2+ and never felt the need to upgrade the modem, so I was just wondering why should I. Makes sense. So, you are saying it's a good upgrade especially if you have NBN or cable connection?

        • +2

It has dual band wifi, which your modem probably doesn't. This is useful if you have a lot of devices connected, or stream media wireless to your tv's.

If you only have a laptop and a phone or two connected, you probably wont notice the difference.

        • @h1tek:

i'm in a similar situation with an ancient modem router and have about 9 devices connected (phones, laptops, PS4 and 2x Sonos)

will i see any pick up on internet speed on ADSL2+ with this upgrade? Seems the consensus is that there isnt much difference between routers on ADSL2+?

          cheers

      • AC speeds are only meaningful if you transfer at high speeds within your network. If you use it as an AP for internet only, then there is not too much point. Not with Australia's internet speeds anyway…

  • I had one these modem/routers, they have amazing range and features
the downside is that it blocked all of the Xbox one live services on the dashboard
and in games, i couldn't talk to any people or join any game until i replaced it with a netgear
it could just of been me but keep that in mind :)

  • What about just a router?

  • Just bear in mind if you're in a FTTN area this may become useless as it requires VDSL2. This has a ADSL2+ modem only (according to the specifications).

    • Just means you can only use it as router afterwards. Not useless, because most FTTN modems have limited router capabilities and no AC.

  • +1

I am using the TP-Link WD8960N modem at home, only planing to run N-protocol for now, so is this modem worth getting?

    • Yes, a lot of misinformation here, will work as a router, so useful for any NBN if you cab set it up, AC but works a little better with N than an N modem router. I have had one since they came out. One of my favourite modem routers.
I also had the D9, much the same but much better wifi.

  • -1

Just checked the deal folks, and it is now listed as $150.00 for But it Now.

Still a good price for a solid modem/router though.

    • Listed at $150, but $120 when you apply the coupon.

      • @ tightarse and @ andysa. Thanks for the tips and feedback guys. Much appreciated.

  • Would this wifi be much stronger than a Billion 7800VDPX through 3 plaster/timber walls of interference?

If so, what wifi card would you recommend in my little server to get the most throughput? The wife would be happy to see the Ethernet cable running from my office to the server disappear.

    • +1

It's pretty good through timber and plaster. Won't go through the rather thick concrete walls in my place, so no wifi in the garage gym downstairs :(

  • I have one of these and added a 2tb drive to it so that everyone in the house can use it to backup their pc and share videos easily. After the recent software update it is a lot easier to use.

  • Currently using an 8 year-old Speedstream 4200 modem attached to a similar vintage Netgear router (on Optus DSL). I'm the second-last house at the end of a very long DSL line from my exchange…!! (When we moved in, the Telstra tech who connected up the house asked us if we were planning to run a business, as our internet would always be sub-par due to the huge length of the line.)

Anyway - the Speedstream has started becoming a bit unstable over the last couple of months - running very hot, randomly losing sync, or just freezing up. Any reason this D7 wouldn't be a solid replacement for the current set-up?

    Thanks all… :-)

  • hi guys,

i'v been eyeing on this modem for a while as i read many great comments and from reviews, but i've also been advised to get the NetGear Nighthawk R7000 instead of this new modem.

I actually Need a stronger wifi signal throughout my home (living in a unit that's rectangle). The modem router can only be placed on 1 end of the home.

I am currently using the Netgear dgnd3700 v2 modem router.

Any advised is really really appreciated.

    • +1

How big is your unit? I'm finding the range of 5GHz fairly decent, and spreads throughout my 4-bedroom house. The 2.4GHz on this one is a bit weak though.

      • it's about 15m x 8m ~ 120msquared

the 5Ghz range for the netgear modem router just reaches the other end, but you get frequently wifi signal breakage, resulting in unreliable inconsistant connectivity

        • Have you used one of the free WiFi scanning apps, to see whether there is much channel overlap? If you are in an apartment, many people will be running WiFi. You may need to adjust which channels you use, or how wide a channel you use. The default for AC can be to use the entire spectrum, which can result in an unstable connection if there are many people doing that. A reduced channel width will limit throughput but can improve connection stability. Upgrading to AC can help, but if there are a huge amount of access points where you are, then you may need to use a WiFi extender.

        • @Make it so: When i am within 2 bars of wifi signal or more, the connection if very stable. HOwever, the furthest end of home, where it's about 1 bar or no wifi signal, that's when my connectivity breaks.

The question i really need to find out is whether this D7's WiFi signal could be stronger, reaching further than my current modem router.

        • @howard22: I don't think this modem will provide stronger signal because of the 5G signal having actually shorter range, however it will provide more stable signal while you're in the range because of 5G having less interference from other electronic device in your house.

        • @howard22: As sywater says, it probably won't be a lot stronger, unless your existing one is really bad.
Perhaps you can try a wifi extender somewhere in your home, or a powerline adapter with wifi support.

        • @Make it so:

How is the wifi range compare with D9?

        • @superforever: No idea, I own a D7. But the D9 has "beamforming", which is supposed to help address issues with connection quality. The D7 does not have that.

        • @Make it so:

Checked the box at OfficeWorks, it did say D9 have a better wireless range.

But OW refused to match :(

    • The wifi of the R7000 Is much stronger, also google XWRT and get his firmware for it. The firmware is basically the Asus RT-AC68U firmware with the Merlinwrt upgrade, modified to run on the R7000, Has for instance an openvpn client or server
with policy settings, so you can have some clients going through the vpn and others going through your normal IP.
Works great I have been using it for months.

      • from what you're telling me that's great. I also heard Asus routers bring very strong WiFi signals and their range of connection could be from very far (relatively comparing). I'm hoping the Nighthawk is similar.

By the way, are you on ADSL2+, or nbn?

  • noob question, which is better? does it matter if i plan to sign up with tpg or exetel?

  • I'm really close to the exchange (400m) and have an old modem/router that is super slow and drops out a lot. Time for an upgrade. On iinet ADSL 2. In an apartment that is about 12mx12m so not a huge area. Reckon this would be sufficient?

    $120 for Router, 120 votes

    that's a coincidence

  • -3

Officeworks price beat this deal for me.
    Total $113.24

    • Can you post a receipt please?

    • That is not normal they matched eBay deal.

      • That's why I was hoping to get a copy of his officeworks receipt.

    • how come $113.24? Price beat will be $120 - $120*5% = $114. there will be no cents anyways.

Looks a bit doggy here, a new ID(a hour ago) and first reply with a weird number. I wont buy it.

      • the price match was on 119.20 as above in the post

  • how do i upload a pic of my receipt as I'm a new user?

  • Thanks. I was in the market for a new ADSL modem router.

Just curious, but might the exported config file from my current TP-Link TD-W8980 (N600) import into this beast when it arrives?

  • Careful when ordering.
    I clicked Go to deal.
    Page says D7
    Click Buy it now.
    Paid.
    Invoice says i bought a C7.

One day i will buy something from an ozbargain link that will be a happy experience.

    Not happy, Jan!

    • Exceptions we call it. OzBargain has been great and will remain so.

    • All fixed. Top service from the seller to remedy my cock up.

  • Posting again here: What's the difference between D7 and C7? Which one is more premium? Also, does this ADSL2+ modems work with NBN or cable internet too?
