  • Nice price, though looks like no custom firmware support.

    • The Cisco interface is bloody excellent, although you don't get the advanced options such as the VPN-server capabilities.
Still good for the average user

      • Cisco? Did you mean Belkin?

  • I need a good modem router for around this price (230 max)

    Any deals going ?

  • This or the Netgear R7000? I'm leaning towards the R7000 ($196 after discount).

    • +1

I've got one - just the router (not the vdsl+router one). Pricematched MSY @ OW a couple of months back and got it for around $215 which I was very happy with. Seems to be a pretty great router. There are beefier options if you need extreme range or more throughput etc but basically anything I throw at it, it has no problem with.

      • Yeah just need the router (got NBN) and I've heard nothing but good things about the R7000. Might have to pull the trigger on it, but it's been cheaper in the past.

        • +2

100/40 FTTP here and v happy with r7000. Of course, everyone's needs are different but coming from a Billion 7800NL ADSL2 modem, the Netgear kills it.

        • Have you looked at the ASUS RT-AC68U?

        • @cDNA:

Yeah, I have. It's marginally cheaper ($239 before discount). I've read that it can have some issues with Apple devices?

        • @blaze: The 7800N has a known hardware fault where it degrades over time. Definitely a bad router to buy. I know because I have 2 of them :( Billion admitted to the fault but offered no recourse.

        • @Agret: can you provide some more info on this? note: i had a 7800NL not a 7800N but my buddy has a 7800NXL (based on my recommendation). i hope that model isn't affected. cheers

  • Hi j4ck, where did you get the R7000 discount from pls?

    • +1

      It's $245 on Futu Online's eBay store.

$196 with the 20% off coupon.

      • does this actually boost the signal?? Relying on pretty average Telstra ADSL and looking for anything that may improve the signal.

        • Of course

        • @cDNA: are you better of with just a router into the Telstra modem or go the whole hog with a router and modem?

        • @blackwalnut: Depends on how good your Telstra modem is. Some of them will get crap with age and drop your connection constantly / need rebooting (unplug from power, plug back in) to bring the connection back online. If your connection is staying up and at a reasonable speed then I suggest just keep the telstra modem and buy a router. Make sure to login to the Telstra modem and disable the wifi when you get your new router because the old wifi broadcast will congest your network.

Personally what I do is disable the telstra wifi but copy out the network name and password from the card they give you with the modem into the new router so that you don't have to update settings on any of your devices when you put in the new router :) same network name same password.

        • @blackwalnut:

If your modem is working fine, just buy the router and bridge the modem to your new router.

        • @cDNA: great thanks for the advice, hopefully I can connect it properly!

        • @blackwalnut: it should be pretty basic. Just have to disable the wifi on your telstra modem which you normally access from http://10.0.0.138/ (username and password both admin) then run a LAN cable from any port of the telstra modem to the WAN port on the new router then do the router setup as having dynamic address for the internet. Will go smoothly :)
