Great price but please note that the RAM in these is soldered to the board and cannot be upgradable. 4Gb will work for the basics but you may find yourself wanting/needing more in the future. Each to their own sure but I'd class 8Gb the minimum to ensure hassle free operation for the next 3-5 years as that's the expected life from one of these devices.

128Gb SSD storage isn't exactly a lot either however it's enough for most people doing the usual things and of course it isn't difficult or expensive these days to chuck a large capacity USB device in to get more storage space… it's just the non-upgradeable RAM that could be an issue in the longer term so please tread carefully.

    • +1

      Thank you Steve, good advice!

    • +4

Add a MicroSD card in for an extra 128-200gb storage.

  • +4

Agree with @SteveAndBelle on this. I have this model and regret not forking out a bit more to get a 8GB model. At times mine struggles to just run Google Chrome/MS Edge on its own - ridiculous!

    • +2

Strange, I have last year's Dell XPS 13 with an i5 and 4GB RAM and it works fine for anything I've thrown at it, including FHD video editing. I don't game though.

Is it possible that the Surface Pro is underpowered compared to a comparable ultrabook?

      • +2

Nope, I have a i5, 4gb ram SP4 and it runs absolutely fine.

        • +1

Then perhaps's scroogle's machine has malware if it's struggling to run the normally fast browsers?

  • Thanks for the post OP this is a great price. But after researching this product I see Microsoft is smart because it doesn't come with the keyboard as standard (like the Samsung Tab Pro S) and its more $$$ to get the cover…

(however, I believe that the Surface 4 has wayyyy better specs than the Samsung Tab Pro S)

    • +3

I don't think the surfaces have ever come with the keyboard included. Agree that it's misleading especially when they often include the bloody keyboard in their pictures, but just saying it's always been this way.

      • Ok Thanks. Looking at older Oz Bargain deals, I see that Microsoft has sometimes had sales where they have thrown in a free cover.

Anyway it's a great machine and this is a great deal.

      • +1

I remember being gutted when I bought my first PlayStation 2. It was always advertised with the cool blue stand. In the box……. nothing. It's definitely a crappy advertising technique to always show something with an optional extra

  • +2

Not sure about other people, but this exact model is fine for me. I'm one of those people that have 10000 tabs open in chrome and its fine. Use it to play low intensive games like FTL and its good. no complaints here.

Battery life could be longer though..

  • +1

Anyone know what the cheapest 256GB/8GB RAM i5 goes for? any deals?

    • +2

Currently $1600 using the CLICK20 code: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-4-12-3-Inte… Definitely worth the $412 extra in my opinion.

      • sweet, what's the warranty on these? 1 or 2 years? Who do we contact if something goes wrong given this is an ebay deal?

        • 1 year Hardware Warranty, not sure about the battery though but these days that should also be included. I guess you'd call Futu first but they would probably tell you to just contact Microsoft direct.

      • Steve- do you know if i can claim TRS at the airport if i buy this ? I am not sure if i get a proper invoice showing the GST and if this is local Auztralian stock .There is a click and collect option at Big W that is good.

        • Really not sure sorry. Best to check with Futu direct unless another OzB'er can assist with personal experience?

        • It is a Australian Stick and you will get a Tax Invoice from Futu Online and yea it is eligible for TRS claim

        • I'm heading to denmark in a month and was wondering about trs, do we claim it on the way out then just hide it when coming back?

Because it says you are supposed to claim it if its above 900 on the way back in.

      • Orrrr…..for 1759.21 after discount you can nab a Dell XPS 13
        6th Gen i7-6560U 256GB SSD 8GB RAM 3.2 GHz Win10

I lust after both but suspect I'll grab the XPS due to higher specs, keyboard etc.

Also, there are rumours that the Surface 5 may be released this month.
Here's a link rebutting that claim but something to consider as well.

        http://www.newseveryday.com/articles/44363/20160530/surface-…

        • There likely won't be a surface 5 this year if you look at Microsofts release schedule in the past. Stupid bait sites just bait. Dont fall for it.

          Theres also no new processors.

        • +1

Also futu and kogan both sell Asus rog and MSI laptops around that price that are far better.

Is get the surface if you are an artist or have really light computing requirements, like word, video watching and internet browsing.

        • @RI4V4N:
          Any recommendations RI4V4N?

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on the XPS13 from Dell.

What do you suggest is better for the same Price ASUS or MSI wise?

        • @RI4V4N:I love it how it advertises this as artist and trendy people in design and media use it when hardly any of them do.

        • @ubcool: I know quite a few who do. It's better and cheaper than wacoms offerings.

        • @kfuerza:

Depends if you want it small I guess. Otherwise check futu online store as goto laptops and look at Asus rogs/MSI. Both have 15" laptops with i7s, 8gig ram and gtx960m's for around 1.8k before the 20% coupon.

        • @RI4V4N:
          Cheers m8

        • @RI4V4N: Mobile Kaby Lake processors are expected Q2.. which is this month.

MS never discounts this product. They are like Apple. They control the pricing. The fact that they're discounting it now might be a hint that a new refresh with updated CPU is on the way.

My eyes lit up when I saw your Dell XPS 13 price.. then I found out it is for the 1080p screen version only, not the 1800p.

        • @lostn: ms are not discounting this, this is an eBay sale. eBay front the difference.

Any other surface sale that has been on hasnt been more than the 15% in Jan/feb anyway.

It seems very unlikely there will be q surface five range before thy have been out for a full year. Those sites are just click bait.

        • @RI4V4N: HN have 10% off. MS is discounting it.

The SP5 may not come this month, but it will come. Wouldn't take more than 3 months tops.

        • @lostn:

Ha. I'm calling you on that. I think we won't see one till next year.

The 10% sales happen all the time.

  • Can stack with the Groupon Ebay deal to save an extra $15

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/248701

Actually, code isn't stackable - nvm

  • can this be used for gaming? xD

  • How does this compare to spectre x2?

    • +2

      From my reading:

      • both 12" screen but Surface is more compact machine
      • surface is higher res screen (can't recall exactly), x2 is 1080p (which is still pretty good for a 12" laptop)
      • Kick stands are comparable, as are keyboards (Surface maybe slightly better kb)
      • Surface pen (included with surface) is supposed to be better. X2 supports Wacom pen but it's not included.
      • x2 comes with keyboard, while surface keyboard is additional $170(?)
      • x2 is much cheaper - HN had the core m7 512GB model on sale for around $1400 while the $200 rebate was active - amazing price for the specs
      • x2 uses m5, m7 processor, while surface has i5, i7. In practise there's not a lot of difference, but x2 is fanless. Bottom of the line surface pro 4 is a coreM and is fanless

Overall, I think I'd rather the Surface, but I'd probably buy the x2 due to current price differences.

      • Should probably emphasise that the pen supported is Wacom AES not EMR (People usually think of EMR tech when Wacom is mentioned). The big difference is AES uses battery whereas EMR doesn't (and I think almost all, if not all, people would say EMR feels better).

Screen ratio is different in that Surface Pro 4 has 3:2 ratio whereas X2 has 16:9.

This is a great device. My macbook pro barely gets used. I think for most people, you will find that this can handle 99% of your day.

I don't game so I can't comment. The only time this has fallen short is editing Raw photos. Capture One runs like crap but aside from that everything else is awesome about this. I put in a 200GB MSD card to store photos off my camera while traveling and movies and some virtual machines. It all runs well off the card.

I did not know how much I needed this device until I had it. I now print business stuff to One note, mark it up in there. It's just fabulous for work.

  • +1

If you want Aussie stock HN Have this for $1248

    • But isnt futu (shopping express) aussie stock?

      • +2

Didn't think so, might be wrong though, but you can get OW To price beat HN $1248 & Pay $1185 :)

        • Just checked out a non-group-buy listing by futu for $10 more: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Surface-Pro-4-12-3-Inte…

          Item Location: Alexandria, NSW

So looks like it's definitely Aus stock, which makes sense since Futu is owned by Shopping Express

        • +2

@lyl: Learn something new everyday :) but if you want it I would go the OW Pb option

    • Looks like OW have already price matched it to $1246.

However, I have a staff discount 5%, so I'll be getting the price beat price anyway.

      • Yeah they don't waste time these days, once someone says you can price beat within a few hrs they have changed it

  • I have been using surface pro 3 for 2 years now. The best laptop I have owned. The screen is very sharp with great color, stylus is very good, I own the i5 4gb and never once feels any lag or stutter whatsoever. Will retire this machine soon and get surface 4 or 5. I don't use many Microsoft service nor like the company but this is machine I recommend to everyone I know

    • Does it feel comfortable on your lap? Is it easy to fall over?

      • Feels awkward and constantly playing a balancing game , very hard to use when lying down on sofa or bed.

      • Not sure if this is sarcasm or not. But no you can not use it like normal laptop. But the portability and convenient outweigh this.

        • Nope not sarcasm. I was under the impression that it is touted as a laptop replacement.

  • +1

I owned the 8gb/256gb version and its a great device but battery life is sub-standard for what it is. Just reading a PDF on low light the battery would last 4-5 hours. Went through all the troubles of killing unused processes etc, contacted MS support and then just sent it back for a full refund. So, if you need something on the road this thing probably won't suit your needs.

  • Nice, but needs more mem…thrashing to swap file…more thrashing…ory.

  • Way better than the https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250639 Apple iPad

    • Nah not really , for basic tasks iPad kills it. Windows 10 is too fiddly to use on such a small screen. it's still not powerful enough to do decent games or video editing smoothly might as well just get an iPad and and put money saved towards a dedktop

  • Does this run full Windows 10?
What does the GPU compare to?
    Thanks

    • Yes.

GPU will not be very good. You can play simple games on it, but not hardcore games.

  • refuse to pay 1k+ for 4gb ram

  • Is 4GB enough for a lag free experience? 2GB on my tablet was not.

Cheapest place to get a keyboard cover?

    • I have 4GB RAM i5 Surface Pro 3 model.

I personally think 4GB is still usable, given that you don't use something that guzzles RAM. 7 Tabs on Firefox (Including this and a Youtube video) + Kaspersky and Windows both updating + MS Words is not making the device lag (at least not significant) right now.

Though, 8GB would be better, you don't need to limit your usage as much.

  • Can anyone tell me if a case designed for Surface Pro 3 (case, not keyboard cover) will fit a Pro 4?

    example: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Maroo-Obsidian-Black-Folio-Case-F…

      • Hmmm.. it's less than a mm. It should still fit right?

        • Would you want to? I bet it'd not fit perfectly and it might have other issues like some holes not aligning.

        • @Oversimplified: There are not that many SP4 cases. At least not ones that I like.

        • @lostn: Fair point. Check AliExpress as well (I assume you've done that, but just in case you didn't)?

Though, I'd personally advise against that kind of case, since I think those hinder heat dissipation a bit.

  • The seller seem to have increased its price to $1,495 mid way through the promotion period. Making the new discounted price at $1,196 ($8 more).

    • It's still $1485 on group buy.

      • I tried that link but it doesn't allow you to input the coupon code. Also the remaining units left doesn't match on the actual ad listing. It appears to not update so it could be outdated. Potential buyers be aware if you are still holding out. The actual listing shows limited quantity available.
