    I'll wait until they're down to $40 thanks…

      Do you have a script set up to automatically reply to Chromecast 2 posts, jv?

    • +1

      I second that.

    • +4

      I clicked on the deal to read jv's comment

    • When will they hit $40?

      • -1

        Sometime in the near future.

        • Any chance you can be a little more precise? If I wanted the Chromecast 2 now is it worth buying and using now or should I wait? Is it worth waiting another month?

          Any chance you can be a little more precise?

          Maybe after my next meeting with Google.

          @jv:

          I'm asking you a genuine question and you're giving me nothing.
          Do you actually have any information or are you just wasting everybody's time?

        • -1

          @ripsnorter:

          I answered your question

        • @jv:

          So, to clarify, at this point in time, you have no idea when these will be $40?

        • -1

          @ripsnorter:

          It will be in the near future.

          @jv:

          No evidence to support your statement. Isn't that what you're always chasing? Thanks for nothing then.

          @ripsnorter:

          Just keep checking OzBargain.
          Then you'll be one of the first to know.

  • I think the exclamation mark is a little misplaced at $55. "$40!", Yes. $55, no.

    Edit: looks like title has been edited by MOD.

  • They were 2 for $98 in JB hifi last time I looked, but deal isn't on the website (Jb- Artarmon, assume in all stores, on the counter offer)

  • Stupid question but you need internet connection for this right? It's not like Bluetooth is it.

      Stupid question but you need internet connection for this right?

      Nope, you don't need internet, but you need an wifi network…

    • You need Wifi… You dont necessarily need a working Internet connection as long as you have a strong working Wifi Signal. Screen Casting and mirroring should work even without internet (iThink) but for apps like youtube/netflix where content comes via the internet, you would definitely need an active internet connection.

    • Not really a stupid question, especially when it comes to PLEX. I thought I could use a Chromecast with PLEX for local media streaming however 'something' needed to access the internet whenever I wanted to play media off my local NAS. Either PLEX or Chromecast is the culprit but it's a real shame as I hoped it could work 'offline'. I'm thinking PLEX may be to blame as I think it needs to send stats for some reason. I haven't tried it with Chromecast 2 yet but I plan to very soon.

        Plex required you to login into your account to use it. Try using Universal Media Server.
        http://www.universalmediaserver.com/

        • Looks excellent however I run PLEX as a convenient plug-in to Xpenology and it looks like UMS can't be setup that way :( Xpenology & PLEX through Chromecast is such a neat & tidy solution to NAS Media streaming when at home with a permanent Broadband connection but just doesn't work with a flaky connection :(

      • If this is a recent issue, is might be to do with the way that PLEX uses secure connections to the server. Its actually a bit of a hack to get valid SSL certs (you can read more about it here https://blog.filippo.io/how-plex-is-doing-https-for-all-its-…).

        I haven't tested this as I haven't needed to, but the way I understand it, Plex needs to connect out to allow secure connections.

    • Just an FYI: Mirroring from your screen works over the local network, but their are better solutions for streaming videos.

      You can use Chrome/Android Apps which will download the source of the video straight to your Chromecast (meaning you don't need to have your computer turned on or running).
      This does require the internet however.

      For local streaming where you have the video file saves to your Hard-drive - There's a free Chrome app called VideoStream which will encode MKV files and push it to your chromecast over the local network. This does require your computer to be on, but doesn't need mirroring and works much, much better for Full HD streaming.

      • I'm stuck with Sim data, no point if chromecast uses it up.

  • what's the diff bn chromecast 1 and 2 ?

    • +1

      Mainly support for 802.11ac dual band.

    • +4

      Faster wifi, the SoC is slightly faster, it's got a new design and I believe there's a new antenna layout.

      That said, I don't feel it's that much different to the first gen (I've got both).

  • +2

    not quite $40.. but got it for 47.20 (local pickup @ tgg) on the last 20% off ebay deals..

  • Guys will this work with a small Telstra mf90 4g WiFi modem or I need a WiFi router

    • Your router needs router capabilities.

      If the Telstra mf90 4g module assigns an IP Address in "Isolation" this will not work as it needs to create a local network.
      But even then, the routing capability of a pocket device may not be strong/fast enough to support Chromecast.

      Oh, and there is also some other Wifi Magic that happens in the background - features like Wifi Direct that your router will need to support - but I may be wrong.

    Chromecast was always buffering… Chromecast 2 is seemless

    My view

    • Using which apps to cast?

    • Never had any problems with buffering on 2x chromecast 1 - you must have a noisy wifi network, as the only difference is support for AC and 1080p .
