I must say, 2.5kg is very impressive for a laptop of this size and spec.

Hey Rep.. can you do a deal on the 17" ones of similar spec? Thinking of replacing my aging overheating HP Envy 17.

I notice that you have EOFY discounts on the options too (eg. 16GB RAM and 480GB M2). Does these work with the special OZB deal?

      • +2

Hi, Yes the current Super EOFY Sale prices are added on this deal also.
Just click on the "RAM" and "M.2 SSD1" customise options on the right of the P650RE webpage. The discount prices are there.

At the moment this deal is only on the P650RE. I would have to confirm on Monday with Metabox about a 17" deal.

        Kris

        • Hey Rep.. can you also do a deal on the 14" ones of similar spec? Thanks

        • Thanks Rep. I'll be interested to hear. Very tempted to pull the trigger a good 17" Metabox deal or go the Gigabyte equivalent (slightly cheaper once you add the RAM and storage into effect).

BTW. Your website is down this morning. DNS resolution issues.

        • @gekiyasu:

Would also be interested in a 14" deal!

        • @Gnat:
Actually we just had one of these 14" deals earlier in the month.
I'll see if there's something we can do on the 14" as well :)
          Kris

        • Rep - how did you go with negotiating the 17" model? Thanks

        • @Kong Computers: Any word on that possible 14" deal?

        • @djamesm88:
Hello, not at the moment. Just this one for the P650RE. I'll see if we can do one soon but we just finished a couple of 14" deals lately.
          Kris

        • @Gnat:
Still no word on a 14" deal as we had a couple recently already, sorry.

Love my metabox. Amazing specs & price. For personal machines, i doubt I'll ever buy anything else again.

      Must say though…
      "That's a HUGE saving"
      It's 7.3%. Not "HUGE".

      Just saying.

No OS, single stick of RAM (no dual channel), no storage… I'll stop there.

    • +3

Hi psyren89, As stated above you can choose all the options that you want in the customise menus on the P650RE webpage :) So you just choose what you want.
Are you familiar with Metabox laptops?
      Kris

      • -3

Yes, my friend has one. You should probably state in your description what the minimum price would be for some include storage.

    • +5

You don't seem to know much about computers. Majority would appreciate single stick because it is easier to upgrade, you just add a stick instead of replacing both. If you are after storage buy it WITH HDD/SDD where is the problem?

BTW. there is next to no performance gain in dual channel vs. single channel

      • -5

You don't seem to know much about computers.

What gave you that impression? Perhaps you feel better talking down to others?
I'm a programmer and have been building my own for well over a decade.

Majority would appreciate single stick because it is easier to upgrade, you just add a stick instead of replacing both.

        Fair enough.

there is next to no performance gain in dual channel vs. single channel

There are mixed benchmarks out there indicating the difference between single and dual channel performance, but the general consensus matches yours.

I think overall, everyone has differing requirements for laptops and computing.
All views above have valid points. It's just that customers are all different and we try to cater for as many people as possible. Obviously we can't cater for everyone as there are always customers that need something special and the market will change over time to accommodate this. So it's kinda cool that we get this sort of feedback. I know that Metabox read these posts as well :)
          Kris

    • +6

Hardly a valid reason for a neg, unless someone else is including those for less.

I'd love it if more manufacturers would let me bring my own like this.

    • If you really need the extra bits, go the Gigabyte model they have for only $30 more:

  • What is the speed of the LAN port? The link doesn't seem to mention it.
Just asking, as there seems to be some manufacturers that have the audacity to have crippled (10/100) LAN ports on $1000+ laptops.

  • How is the performance of the battery for this laptop?

    • In one word, 'enough'.
A bonus, more than a selling point.

It's all about breathing fire, never about relaxing. So for student use, I'm getting 1/5th battery life of an ultrabook. One day I'll finish tweaking mine with Intel XTU, make a custom (to my machine) profile to run super lean. Will get 3.5-4hrs,then.

      • Do you think you could upload that? I would be interested in seeing how much of a change I can get. Thanks

        • As mentioned, each machine is different. Undervolting, underclocking is easy enough to do, with nothing to risk. Some will crawl better than others.

    • +1

Two hours of light use, less than an hour of gaming.

  • Hi Kris,

Can you please check and assist with following.

Interested in upgrading to 32 GB Ram.

    My Question is

    1) which Brand of Ram you use.

    Further more when I compare Ram 2 X 16 . Can get for $199 from PC Gear(Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK32GX4M2A2400C14R 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 Red) while yours 32 GB Ram ( 2 X 16 GB) is $229 (pardon me if I am wrong)

    2) Whats difference between Premium & Platinum support in Warranty.

For $119 you get (1 year of Platinum + 2 Years of Premium Support) , so I assume this is on TOP of 2 years Platinum (please explain , if I am confused)

    Thanks in advance.

    • I have sent Mekalol a message. They emailed me also.
The RAM is Kingston Hyper - X

With the Platinum warranty, Metabox pay for pick-up and return delivery of the laptop during the warranty period if there is an issue with the laptop.
Premium warranty is the same warranty except the customer pays for the collection of the laptop within the warranty period, but Metabox pay for the return of the laptop back to you. The DOA period is the first 14 days of ownership and Metabox have to pay for the pick-up and return within the DOA period no matter what warranty you have.

Whichever warranty you select is the entire warranty that you get. You asked if the 1 year of Platinum + 2 Years of Premium Support is on top of the 2yr Platinum warranty and it is not. You would just get the 3 yrs in that case, not 5 yrs.

Just wanted to say always a pleasure dealing with Kris from Kong computers. This laptop line is awesome for the money - I have an earlier version in the same shell (earlier processor) and one very similar to this model. Latest model is very quiet. Handles 2 external 23 inch monitors playing the games I play with ease and very easy on the power consumption generally.

Not for everyone but a few of my friends now have them also from seeing mine.

  • Would there be a better deal if i was looking yo get a laptop as an architecture student? Ao use for rhino/cad etc.

    • +2

I believe the cpu if this laptop is more than enough for those programs. It will be much better once you upgrade the ram to 16gb or more.

    • Thanks for the message, Ultimately I think that a Nvidia Quadro graphic card would be a better choice but they are much pricier.
      See here.
      http://www.kongcomputers.com/product-listing/workstations.as…

As quoted by beoluch below, the CPU on this special is very powerful and would handle the processing power very well. The graphic card is specifically designed for gaming though and Nvidia GTX cards are a cheaper alternative to Quadro cards and CAN work as well as Quadro in some/most cases. Although they aren't OpenGL like the Quadro's are.
I am a bit hesitant to 100% recommend going with a Nvidia GTX card over a Quadro card for your requirements as I'm sure there's many people on this forum who would differ their opinions on this.
I just think a Nvidia GTX graphic card is a cheaper alternative to the more expensive Quadro cards :)

I own a P650RE-G, this same laptop as P650RE but with G-Sync. I love it.

I'll just name the top points of this laptop which make it stand out from the competition:

    1. Good price for a laptop with 970M graphics card.
    2. Well built. Relatively quiet laptop for a 970M. I don't notice the fans while playing games.
    3. Screen is nice and bright with wide viewing angles (not a cheap screen)
    4. One of a very few laptops with G-Sync available (Only P650RE-G)
    5. Can already utitilise the latest M.2 Samsung 950 Pro nvme SSD giving fastest SSD speeds.
    6. On top of the M.2 nvme SSD, it can fit two more additional sata SSDs. So can have 3 SSDs. (Can also do 4 SSDs, if you just use sata M.2 drives)
    7. Can take 4 sticks of RAM.

    Hope that helps someone.

  • Hi OP just wondering once this laptop gets to the buyer are the ram and storage the only things we could upgrade?

    • You can upgrade the RAM, HDD/SSD and Wi-Fi card. The CPU and graphic card are on-board, so you can't upgrade these.

      Cheers

  • How about the shipping and warranty? Handed by Kong or Metabox? And How's the reputation of Kong computers?

    • +1

I probably shouldn't comment on our reputation as I guess I'm a bit biased :)

Shipping is insured overnight delivery with signature on delivery via Startrack Express. Overnight to capital cities, add an extra day for fringe metro/regional areas. It does take 5 business days for orders to get to the front of the order queue, get built and tested before shipment.

This model has the 2yr Platinum warranty, Metabox will pay for the collection and return delivery of the laptop withing the 2yr warranty period if something goes wrong.
More details can be found here.
      http://www.metabox.com.au/warranty.asp

      Kris

      • Thanks OP. Btw Intel Core i7-6820HK Processor should be 8M Cache instead of 6.

I just came back from the movies and discovered that the website is down. Looks like my web hosting server is down. Hopefully will be back up shortly.
I wasn't notified of any maintenance this weekend. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • +2

Just a suggestion. Could you specify the colour gamut of the displays used for each laptop on your Kong website next to each display choice? e.g. sRGB 80% or sRGB 99%.

    • This would actually be great

      • +3

Good call. They currently don't have those specs listed on the manufacturers websites anymore which is a shame. I'll investigate.
The older Metabox models were 72% gamut and up to 90% gamut on the higher spec models. I'm not sure at the moment on what the current ones are, but I'll check.

        Cheers
        Kris

        • Thanks Kris. The reason I ask is because I recently bought a new laptop which has a high gamut QHD screen and was surprised at the difference. In the future I don't think I could go back to a low gamut screen.

That's a shame that Metabox don't list the specs. I think it would be in their interest as from what I can see they target professionals as well as gamers they could be interested in these type of things?

        • +1

          @robertm:

as a professional who likes to game, i am getting intrigued by recent metabox designs - it sounds like they arent as noisy and hot as they used to be. screen options abound which is great, and the prices arent too bad either.

and best of all they dont come covered in ridiculous coloured lights. (MSI etc i am looking at you. i like keyboard backlight, but that is enough), some of us want to be able to take it to the office or job site and not remind people of new years eve.

speaking of screen quality i notice the overview page says there is the option of a sharp igzo screen. sounds great, but it doesnt show up in the customise box - so maybe it really isn't an option! or is it? (though that may blow my budget)

with this model, its only really the lack of usb3.1 or thunderbolt input that is holding me back from jumping on it already, so might wait and see if a 17 inch deal comes through. also a pity you can't seem to have the 6820hk and gsync.

        • @Asherman:
Yes that IGZO option has now gone. It was over $500.
          Kris

        • @Asherman:

Ha ha agree with the coloured lights - not a good look sometimes :-)

I noticed that igzo option before. Even though it was a big price increase over the standard screen (around $400 I think) I think that it may be [ have been now that the option was removed :-( ] worth it. The only way you would really know the difference is to see them side by side. Depends on how much you are on the laptop… when you use it every day spending a bit more on a special screen can be worth it. I think this may be the same Sharp IGZO panel that is in the DELL XPS 15 (with the 4K screen option) and it costs an extra $400 approx on that machine as well.

        • +1

          @robertm:
Yeah I had a couple of graphic design and photography customers that were hot on the IGZO screen. They said it was worth it for them.
          Kris

  • I see a lot of people "repaste" the CPU/GPU with IC Diamond. Is this recommended or does it void warranty?
What, if anything, is wrong with the paste that Metabox use?

    • Yes it will void the warranty if you touch the heat sinks, sorry.
If there is an issue with the paste then I would contact Metabox (or us) if it is under the warranty period.
