Mitsubishi Lancer ES Sport Automatic 2015 Model from $18,490 Driveaway [Melbourne Only]

1102

This is not a Mitsubishi Australia offer but a dealership offer that has been popping up on my Facebook feed since yesterday (yes, I've been looking at Carsales - but not Mitsubishi's or sedans in particular; and definitely not new!).

On paper, this doesn't seem to be a bad deal given a 5-year warranty, an auto upgrade, reverse camera and LED daytime lights - but I do know the Lancers have been around for a while and may soon be due for a next-gen model.

Thanks to A4classic:

Just rang the dealer and confirmed that:

It is brandnew but 2015 model and manufactured November or December.

5 year warranty already started a few months ago.(don't understand why )

Additional $1000 for non white colors.
Ready to pick up up to 4 days.

      • I'm pretty sure its a multi-link suspension, hence the extra leg room vs similar sized cars with 4xindependent (Accord Euro)

I have the 2010 version but in its sportback form (Activ):
        - No issues after 66,000kms
        - Few loose screws in the interior trim
        - Good driving feel (Car will roll like a boat in the stock rims and tyres)
        - Good power and acceleration from 2.0L + the CVT Auto
        - Terrible fuel economy vs the rest at a similar price point (Mazda3 or the Corolla avg 7.X vs 10.0 in urban conditions)
        - Massive A-Pillars due to side curtain airbags and old design.
        - the chassi has been out since 2007 and you can get much more car for that amount of money.

    • I believe the reverse camera is factory fitted in these models and has been for the past 2-3 years.

      • +1

Thats pretty good then I reckon.

    • 5 year warranty or 100,000kms which ever comes first 1 year road side assist OR Kia 7 Years Unlimited kms warranty 7 years road side assist 7 years capped price servicing.

read here for each fine print.

      http://www.kia.com.au/customer-care/7-year-unlimited-km-warr…

      http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.au/customer-assistance/capp…

I must admit, Mitsubishi is falling behind in these factor but they do have a good reputation, however, the future of automotive is becoming more competitive and value for money.

      • well if you're going to throw Mitsubishi in the deep end might as well mention the Toyota and Mazda are worse in this type of comparison.

        • +1

i'm not throwing anything in the deep end, it's just the well known ones don't have such a good warranty for a longer period of time, it may suit some it may not, for me i prefer unlimited kms and at least a minimum of 5 years, i do heaps of driving interstate so i'd prefer the peace of mind of having something solid in case something goes pear shape

    • Might have a bit of an issue there…. according to the Kia dealer I visited earlier in the week, there are a whole seven new MY15 Ceratos in the country (or at least, seven that they can get), they're all base model hatches, and given that the facelifted MY17 Cerato is coming out this month there may not be much wiggle room there.

  • Any idea if Mitsubishi US being bought will affect Mitsubishi elsewhere?

  • +2

Auto comes with CVT yea? Not a big fan of CVT to be honest.

    • Yeah CVT is good for maintenence free. But its not a very pleasing drive, real linear acceleration, its but like driving a boat.

These Jap made mitsys are pretty good though reliability wise. We have a 2010 Outlander CVT 4x4 2.4 and its bee great mechanically holding up awesome at 132,000. Only dud thing has been the volume buttons on the steering wheel (common relay ring problem). The they are pretty much just a pumped up lancer wagon with some extra stroke in the motor.

    • The CVT's have a bad rep, but mine's been completely fine. Apart from the cost to replace the fluids which can expensive

  • +2

    LOve my Lancer too!
Where this car being built? still Japan?

mine has 100 000 kms now.

But this is not a sports back (hatch). This is a sedan?

    very tempting though to upgrade.

I am a service engineer always driving.

    • +2

you sir need a Unlimited KMS warranty for the Peace of Mind :)

    • -1

nothing sporty about the sports back its actually the heavier car.. and the uglier.
      ive had both

      • who really cares? the car is great! yes basic. What would you drive for work? Porsche Macan S ? I would love to but …is it reasonable?
Cheap reliable and easy to service car as Lancer is amazing for Engineers. Car is for making money not for spending on it) anyway its just a car.

P.S. Equipment fits better into hatch rather than Sedan. Instruments, big parts.

        • lol so you neg'd me because I said the sports back is less sporty which happens to be the one you own, im simply stating facts and ive owned both versions.

  • +8

this car is oooooooooooolllllllllllllllldddddd- seriously the cars fundamentals hark from the early mid-2000s, thats the reason why Mitsubishi are flogging them so cheap.

A seriously plasticky interior that'll make an American car owner feel nostalgic and very ordinary dynamics (EVO excluded) make it not worth it IMHO.

Buyers should opt for either an i30\Elantra (19,990 DA with Auto) since the interior is actually modern and screwed on properly or a runout Kia Cerato ($18,990 DA with Auto) since it has that brilliant 7-year warranty.

    • +3

I owned a Hyundai and I'd never buy one again…. 5.5 years of ownership meant roughly 82% depreciation, and it went in for major warranty repairs 4 times… What kind of a useless car manufacturer can't get a Manual gearbox right? Admittedly mine was a 2008 Getz, but I wouldn't be willing to give another one a try. Couldn't wait to get rid off it after about 6 months. That 82% depreciation was selling it privately, if I'd accepted the dealer's trade in, I would have got less than 10% of what I paid for a car that was 6 months out of warranty!

I've had my Lancer ES (base model) for 2.5 years, and I still think of it as a new car (I'd literally typed in 1.5 years even in this comment and had to think about it…). I love mine, and would have it over any Hyundai or Kia.

I am weird, and my car is probably just my personal preference, but all I'm saying is there is at least one person in the world that sits on the other side of the coin.

  • Bought this car in early 2008 and recently sold. Cheap to maintain and never had any issues. At this price its a steal but remember it's a very dated car. Nothing fancy inside but very comfortable seats
If you are looking for a new car then yes it's still good value I think. Big enough for 5 adults and heaps of boot space.
Only issue: mileage on this was really bad for city driving compared to similar range cars
After 80k Kms sold it to upgrade to big car, if I had a need for 2nd car I wouldn't have sold it.
Personally I wouldnt buy this car but instead a chose a couple of years old Mazda 3 or a Hyundai in the same price range.

  • +3

Lol, with the spoiler, this car would get a 100% stop rate for a police breath test.

But seriously the exterior design is a bit dated. The new Mazda 3 looks really nice.

  • Looks like a good deal. If only I was in Melbourne and could afford a car :P

  • Another option in this price range is a Nissan Pulsar (B17). Also boring as bat shit but I have seen auto ones going for 16K brand new.

    I bought my manual mid-range ST-L for 15K 2 years ago!

Just the other day I saw the top of the line SSS one for 24K drive away at my local dealer.

    Might be worth a look.

TLDR: Nissan is desperate on selling their Nissan Pulsar and a good deal is to be had at almost any trim level

    • actually i was watching a very slightly used one only about 5k on the dial and the dealer sold it for 21k… but here's a fair few in the mid 20's and a few ST-S just under 20 :) id go for those personally

    • I also believe the Pulsar is jap built which is a plus. A lot of car for the money and most likely a lot less headaches than a lot of others as well.

      • Pulsar is not jap built (Thailand built) and is nowhere cheap to run as a Lancer. I was shopping the two against each other (Lancer LX and Pulsar SSS) and couldnt get over paying more for a car that cost so much more to run, with the only advantage of the SSS was a 0-100 time. The Pulsar handled similar despite being the sports model (and having more expensive tyres, higher octane fuel, more expensive insurance, more expensive service intervals, etc.)

        • If you think a "" regular "" bog standard Pulsar is expensive to own then I will leave you to it.
Pretty sure no one was referring to top of the line sports model here… this whole post is about an $18.5k bargain new Lancer or equivalent.

        • @xywolap: Actually everyone in this thread other than you was talking about the SSS model. I thought I would post up why they are so cheap.

If you want to compare the base pulsar against a base lancer then the pulsar will still cost more to own. Much like the mazda 3, corolla and civic, all these cars have 6mth or 10k service intervals, plus only 3 year warranties.

  • The car has not been updated for years. Refinement is not even much better than already ancient Holden Cruze. I would rather buy Elantra/i30, Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3. Heck, I'd take Suzuki Kazashi over Mitsu Lancer.

    • The 'Kizashi' is actually an amazing car to sit in. The Sport AWD is leagues ahead of the Mazda/Toyota in fit and finish and build quality.

      • -1

Nah, Kizashi is a front wheel drive vehicle and its AWD is not really AWD much as any other AWD cars based on FF vehicles. Plus, you need to fork out $40000+ for the Sport AWD variant and I am sure there are a few Toyota/Mazda that are sportier than Kizashi at that price range(86, for example).

        • +4

The 86 and the Kizashi are a completely different kettle of fish. Poor choice of comparison. I'd say maybe the top of the range Mazda 3 would be a better one to compare with, or even the up-coming Honda Civic.

        • +1

          @goose25:

Thankyou, someone that actually knows what they're talking about
Probably the best car to compare the Kizashi to would be the Liberty. Both AWD Japanese etc. A focus more on quality.

        • -1

@goose25: He said any Mazda or Toyota, but again if I was asked whether Mazda 3 SP25 Astina Kizashi Sport AWD, I would still choose Mazda 3 over Kizashi. Better engine tech with more power and more torque.

        • @Spackbace: Going OT here but I really like the Kizashi's looks - not sure if they do an upspec performance model? I was looking at a Levorg or WRX or similar at the end of year

        • +1

          @Wampus:

It's all but been discontinued, with only a handful of new ones in the country :(

        • +1

          @Spackbace:

You're right, but the liberty drives very differently from the Kizashi (I test drove both, and now have a liberty), but I felt the Kizashi interior was superior to the liberty.

Anyway, as much as I'd love to discuss cars, we digress, Back to 2015 Lancers. :)

  • Wow that's a great deal. Not in Sydney you say?

    • +1

Go to a couple of dealers "ready to sign up" and make a genuine offer at this price and see what happens.
I have made offers to new car dealers and where one will laugh at your offer the next one jumps at it.

      • +1

I actually just might, I always kept an eye on the Lancer, was hoping to grab one when the new generation rolled out, but seeing as they haven't made any indication of one in development, might as well jump the gun here.

They might not be the best in class but definitely great value at 18k. The only worry I'd say is Mitsubishi going through some tough times, but the chances of anything serious happening to the customer support is probably incredibly low.

Thanks for the strategy, looks like a good one, at the end of the day these guys know who the serious buyers are at least one might be willing.

        • This 'deal' is for a 2015 plated demo. Don't expect dealers to be able to match the price. Come a bit closer, maybe, but probably not match.

        • Zylam… don't fear Mitsubishi going through tough times… they have known nothing else :-)
There's a lot of makers out there these days and quite a few are paddling hard to stay afloat, it is a hard business to be in.

        • @Spackbace: Could be a 2015 plated car but who said it's a demo? Check the dealership's Facebook page - they are claiming this car comes with 5 year/130K warranty! False advertising?

        • @sacs2k1:

Check the last few comments, warranty has started which means the cars are licensed. Licensed car = demo

So yes, they are false advertising.

  • +5

Yes it is a dated car… but why change the formula of a well made reliable car?
No other car at this price point comes close to the lancer in terms of size/features.
I would rather trade my old car with short rego in for a 5 year peace of mind warranty and with registration/ctp green slip nowadays in excess of $1,200, 4 brand new tyres, that is a further saving for me.

    • +2

Yes it is a dated car… but why change the formula of a well made reliable car?

I asked exactly the same question when I replaced my first car…

  • +1

I don't know why you're all questioning the efficiency and reliability of Mitsubishi. My old man has owned two Nimbuses. His current one is a 1992 model which we assume has over 450,000km's. The odometer stopped working a while ago, but the car is still going.

    :P

    • Reminds me of a guy in the highway driving a bomb using his iPhone as his speedo.

Just rang the dealer and confirmed that:

It is brandnew but 2015 model and manufactured November or December.

5 year warranty already started a few months ago.(don't understand why )

Additional $1000 for non white colors.
Ready to pick up up to 4 days.

They also said that the warranty extended to 10 years (check yourself for details as it changes the deal a lot). I couldn't believe.

I also rang other dealer who offered the full price. Surely it is this dealership offer not other dealers participating.

    • +2

It's licensed, hence the warranty already started.

      I knew it!

      • Same

    • +1

A lot of dealers will extend the warranty if you have the vehicle serviced with them every six months. But cars only need 12 month servicing, so the extra warranty is just an insurance from you paying them more money for a sham service.

Also the additional warranty has so many exclusions its not really worth the paper it is written on.

Haha, watch out, some people here are gonna get butthurt with your transcript

  • Great deal for a new car.

I wouldn't buy one today, actually, I wouldn't have bought one when it was released 8-9 years ago, however for the person who doesn't care about cars, I think it's a great buy for the price. It will give you years of reliable service and also cheap and easy to service.

  • 92+ people liked-> nearly 92 cars sold, yeah?

  • On price the Lancer offer is a clear winner. Where else can you get a medium size car for $18.5k drive away with auto? Yes, the model is dated and has changed very little since 2009. But someone looking for good reliable transport is going to be very pleased. I just sold a 2004 Lancer with 217k km on the clock. Very few things went wrong with that car and it was a pleasure to own.

    • My parents recently bought a 2016 i30 for $19,750 with auto and 60 months warranty. 0km on the odometer. Plus they received $2,000 trade in for their car which was worth only $1,000 at most (if anybody would actually buy it).

The point is you can negotiate a good deal for any brand of car in this price range. The offer here is okay, but remember it is a 2015 badge not 2016 badge, so there is some depreciated value there. It is a good deal if you don't want to negotiate, but others should be able to use this as a starting point to negotiate with other manufacturers and dealers.

      • I too bought an i30 (but diesel) last month. Despite owning a Lancer previously I didn't even venture onto a Mitsubishi lot to check out their new Lancers. It's an old model and didn't interest me, but this $18.5k deal may be suitable for some. It's a substantial discount on the standard price. My i30 is also a 2015 build (series 2), but I generally keep my cars for 10 years so in the end the one year difference will make almost no difference.

BTW - 60 month warranty is standard across all i30s :-) It's another way of saying 5 years, which Mitsubishi also does.

        • Except this offer only comes with approximately 57 months warranty as the warranty has already started.

        • @bargain_knight: If the car has been registered then the warranty has started, therefore the car isn't new. But the OP states the car is brand new, so someone has made a mistake somewhere. A brand new car with expiring warranty doesn't make sense.

        • +2

          @Cluster:

OP copied off the dealership who have misrepresented these cars as brand new, 2016 plate, when in fact they're demo 2015 plate cars.

One of those many cases of TGTBT.

        • @Spackbace: Ah, makes sense. A demo 2015 auto Lancer for $18.5k isn't such a good deal then.

        • @Cluster:

My thoughts exactly! All 99+ votes were thinking this deal was for a brand new 2016 car.

        • +1

@Cluster: They appear to be 'demo' in name only, as Spackbace himself said, only registered to fudge the statistics…again, as others have noted, they are likely 'undriven'.

That said, whilst it appears to be an OK deal, the misrepresentation weakens it significantly, hence why I revoked my +.

  • +1

It is probably undriven car. Dealer registered the car earlier this year to jack up the number of cars sold stats purposes. This was done by Camry too.

    • Every manufacturer does it, every dealership does it, some more than others.

      • +1

The overall point is that this isn't such a great deal. For example on Carsales a new 2015 MY16 Hyundai i30 is $18,490. It too is automatic. Some would argue that the i30 is a better car than the Lancer.

        http://www.carsales.com.au/bncis/details/Hyundai-i30-2015/OA…

So for what it is, this is a normal price, not a price that deserves 100+ upvotes. I'm going to neg this deal on that basis.

        • Objectively, no one can really argue a base Lancer is superior to an i30.
Lancer has an engine from 2007, that is less economical, more noisy and less efficient. ( i30 makes the same power with a 1.8)
The CVT sounds harsh underload and is jerky.
Cabin has really poor sound proofing, alot of road noise is present.
Interior is bland with hard plastics that and are poorly fitted.
Boot in sedan is too small.
Seats are average but not terrible.
Only minor tweaks to the interior in 2013 with a small touch screen and a few styling tweaks (rumors of a tweak to the suspension in 2015 model)
Paint us quite thin and chips more easily that others cars in the same class.

Sure they're pretty much bullet proof and I love the styling but really buying one brand new is a bad objective choice- well if was between this and a cruze or a focus I would get this. I don't fancy being burnt to death in the cruze or having my duel clutch transmission fail in the focus.

Buy an Hyundai i30, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla or Kia. Honda Civic and Nissan Pulsar are ok, if you get a Suburu in a similar price braket (unlikely) then put it on your short list.

  • Over 100 up votes on a car post? Sheepbargain.

  • This is the first time I've seen an auto variant go for thousands cheaper than the manual..

  • +3

    Honest review below:

So, I took one of these for a test drive this afternoon, with a work colleague who is looking for a new car, admittedly in Perth, not from the dealership in the post. On first glance, the car looks very "sporty" due to the side skirts and spoiler, the new alloys are acceptable, the LED running lights make the car look more up-market and the touch-screen infotainment system looks good too. Standard inclusions like climate control, cruise control and steering wheel audio controls were nice additions to a budget friendly vehicle.

The first one we drove started making a strange "grinding" noise under acceleration after maybe 10 minutes, which became more and more apparent as the drive continued and felt very tired, although there was only 45km on the clock. So the salesman took us back to the dealership to try a different one, which didn't make the same noise, but still produced a LOT of engine noise, and didn't drive all that well. The CVT and motor are very lifeless, interior is of a fairly standard quality, which includes the cheap plastic steering wheel, hard touch surfaces throughout and standard cloth seats (and the new gloss black trim is a magnet for fingerprints). However the new DAB+ is a nice feature and the standard reverse camera is as well. All in all, I think the new Lancer was VERY Average, and find it difficult to recommend to anyone shopping for a new car.
