$200 EFTPOS Card When You Join Any Combined Hospital and Extra's Package @ NIB

1180

Been waiting for an offer like this since getting my $300 eftpos card from iSelect.

Things to note:

  • This deal is probably best for those who have PHI to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge. If your on a Private Insurance Cover for medical reasons, its probably not the best idea to be jumping from one fund to another

  • Check with your new Health Fund that they have transferred you waiting limits across within the 30 day cooling period.

I have also confirmed that all your waiting periods transfer from all your previous funds. Just make sure you either have the transfer certificates to provide to your new fund, or provide authorization to the new fund to request the transfer certificate. Now when you login to your new fund account, you will see the waiting periods from when you joined the new health fund. But this will be corrected manually when a claim is made based on all your previous transfer certificates.

You should get this in your email to confirm your eligibility if you've followed the right steps:

Congratulations! By joining a combined Hospital and Extras cover you’re now on your way to receiving a $200 eftpos gift card!
At the end of your 30 day cooling off period, we’ll send you an email with all of the details on how you can redeem your gift card.

Below is a Table that shows how much you would be paying extra in Tax if you didn't have Private Health Insurance

(g) the Eligible Entrant must have a valid email address applied to their policy; and

To summarise , I've been jumping from one health fund to another every few months and taking advantage of free eftpos and gift cards / vouchers and flybuys points .

I've earned approx $1000 in freebies which literally has paid off my PHI costs

  • I am with NIB and have been with them for the last 7 or 8 years, I only have it because of the Levy. Which other provider has a promo that I could benefit from, the Medibank one requires six months continuous membership.

  • +1

Can anyone confirm that only the waiting periods served on your last fund are the only one taken into account? Ive had PHI for several years and only been with 2 funds. Not sure if moving to this fund and then having to re-serve waiting periods again after moving from NIB is worth the hassle. Would seem a little unfair given that industries always tell you that shopping around is your best way of saving but you lose the benefit of having served waiting periods already.

  • I've never held my own private health insurance before and am interested in giving NIB a go. The waiting period for some extras may be a while, but for other services + hospital it's probably a good idea I get something.

    I earn less than 90k

If I sign up and then decide to cancel after the cooling off (Say 1.5 months in or 3 months in) must I transfer to another PHI or can I return to public care?

I couldn't find any mention of a cancellation fee; does anyone know if a fee applies?

In addition, will joining a PHI affect my ability to claim Medicare safety net for past financial year which I have not yet done?

    Thank you.

    • Never heard of cancellation fee in any health fund

    • If I sign up and then decide to cancel after the cooling off (Say 1.5 months in or 3 months in) must I transfer to another PHI or can I return to public care?

Your not obligated to transfer to another Fund once you cance

And even when you have PHI, your still covered by medicare in the public system

will joining a PHI affect my ability to claim Medicare safety net for past financial year which I have not yet done?

I would say no, but best to check with medicare to confirm

  • Just to confirm. As someone without private health insurance I can sign up for this and then cancel after 30 days and collect the $200 gift card?

Hmm I guess I'd have to pay 2 months which would be about $160 so potentially not worth it for $40. Unless they pro-rata when you cancel?

    • +1

Yes they do pro rata. So just cancel once your 30 days is up.

  • We have been with Medibank for many years. My son started orthodontist treatment for few months and used up all the claim limit for that. If I change fund and buy the extra cover, can my son get allowance for the orthodontist treatment after certain waiting period with new fund?

  • +4

AS an ozbargainer and a dentist, I wanted to add me 2 cents.

On the deal itself, I'm considering it for the purpose of avoiding the levy surcharge only.

However regarding PHI in general. I would recommend never getting any "Extras" or "Ancillary" cover. You'd have to do the maths yourself but I believe it's not worth it.

Patients often feel better when they get a rebate and pay less out of pocket at the time of the service. Patients who pay the full amount out of their own pocket and avoid the premiums for extras come out way ahead. Extras cover is just money recycling. You pay the health fund $1 for extras cover to get 50c back as your rebate.

The premiums increase each year outstripping CPI yet rebates don't keep up. These insurance companies are huge private corporations who make billions in profit every year. How do they manage this? They aren't writing policies where you come out ahead.

    • +1

+1 for do the maths yourself, however it's entirely plausible that you'll come out financially ahead from buying extras cover.

You are right in that insurance companies have to make money - so overall, they have to be paying out less than what they're taking in from extras premiums. However this doesn't necessarily apply for individuals.

e.g. I pay about $400 a year for extras. Every year I claim back full optical ($200) and have 2x dental checkups ($140). So at most I'm $60 out of pocket for my extras cover. But every couple of years I have extra dental problems. And this year I've managed to claim 6 physio sessions (6x ~$30) and that was for one sports injury.

So if you're like me - wear contact lens and get 6 monthly dental checkups, you should definitely get a quote for extras and do the maths yourself. If you don't want to buy hospital cover, then you should absolutely do this since extra cover comes with ambulance services included (or at least, my PHI provider has.)

Plenty of people buy extra cover when they don't need it - if you don't spend your optical, have no muscularskeletal problems, don't do sports and aren't fond of dental checkups… then you don't need it. But those people help subsidize the pool for those of us who can easily get our money's worth. :)

      • +1

Totally agree. All Ozbargainers should do the maths themselves.

It's great that savvy members like you get your money's worth. All I wanted to do was warn people about what I see commonly which is extras premium going to waste.

  • This is so confusing to me. You are talking about to avoid MLS, and I am thinking about the Medicare levy.

How to avoid Medicare levy? If I enroll to the PHI, can I not to pay Medical Levy? If not, then PHI is not worth for me as I have to pay Medicare levy + PHI.

My taxable income is less than $90,000

    • if your taxable income is less than $90,000 don't bother.

the idea is to avoid the MLS for those of us who earn over 90k

      • But I still want $200 gift card, so once I've got the gift cards, I'll call them to cancel the premium. Thanks.

    • Everyone in Australia need to pay Medicare levy doesn't matter your income level.

Then There is Medicare levy surcharge, for people with high income without hospital cover. Get it?

      • +1

I got it, thanks for explaining this.

  • Anyone knows the timing to cancel? Because they charged by direct debit from your account, and you have to serve the 30 day cooling off period, when the second charge starts. So how can people pay only one month? Below was what they said:

Sign up to your selected policy by June 30 to get a $200 eftpos gift card after serving the 30 day cooling off period

    • The cooling off period starts when the policy starts. It isn't linked payment dates.

      • Thanks for reply. So you are saying, can cancel the policy during the 30 days cooling off period? Are they going to refund, or will you still get the gift card?

        • You get refunded pro rata if a new month starts

        • Thanks. Is it better if I pay weekly?

        • @zhenwen: You should wait until day 31 to cancel. Depending on your billing cycle, at that point you might have already paid past day 31, but they will refund any extra days (pro-rata). Paying weekly might lower the days you pay for beyond day 31, but it's not a big deal since those days will be refunded regardless.

        • @puffinfresh:

Great. that was what I am looking for.

        • @zhenwen:

At the end of your cooling period, usually day 31 or 32, you will get an email with the link to claim your gift card. At that point, it would be safe to either cancel or transfer to a new fund that has another promotion.

Just remember to request the transfer certificate to be emailed to you from the old fund and keep it handy. This is why

        • @easternculture:
          Thank you.

        • +1

          @easternculture:

Hi EC, I just joined and got a confirmation email that says I have to wait for 45 days in order to get the gift card. This is what the emails says:

Congratulations! By joining a combined Hospital and Extras cover you’re now on your way to receiving a $200 eftpos gift card!

After being with nib for 45 days we’ll send you an email with all of the details on how you can redeem your gift card.

Their T&C says we need to wait for 30 days, but once we joined the email indicates 45 days?

  • I have confirmed that all your waiting periods transfer from all your previous funds.

    • Can you please let me know which policies qualify for Medicare Levy Surcharge exemption? How do you determine whether a policy qualifies or not?
This year for the first time we will be above 180K joint income thus I will have to take one out.

      • +1

        read here from ATO https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Tax-Return/2015/Tax-return/Medicare-levy-questions-M1-M2/M2-Medicare-levy-surcharge-(MLS)

        • Thank you. Would you recommend two single covers or one cover for a couple?

        • +1

          @noskich:

Not sure how PHI works when your on a combined income

        • @easternculture:

          I am confused about this:
$500 or less (for a policy covering only one person), or
$1,000 or less (for all other policies).

Does 1000 or less mean it must be above 500? I find it unusual to set the condition 'or less' without a minimum.

And on the NIB site it says this cover COULD help you avoid tax. I don't want one which can help me, I need one which will.

        • +1

          @noskich:

Inquire with the fund before you join

Can you then let us know the outcome

        • @easternculture:

I used the chat option on the NIB site and this is what the operator told me:'I can't comment on any conditions set by the ATO however I can confirm any level of cover from basic to top will qualify you for reduced tax.'

Thus the cheapest option for a couple in NSW to avoid the surcharge is $28.79.

        • @noskich:

          Does that include extra's ?

        • @easternculture: No, this is basic hospital cover.

    • Does that require you must have PHI continuously with no period of no insurance?
If I use provider A for 3 months (first time with PHI), cancel and stay no insurance for 6 months, then sign up with new provider B, will the waiting period reset to 0 when joining provider B?
      Thank you.

      • +1

Not sure. Best to call and inquire with the Fund of your choice

  • How do you avoid getting charged for the 2nd month?
You need 30 days minimum time so how do you prevent that roll over of the month while also ensuring you are a member for 30 days?
Edit: I saw this answered above thanks

  • I do not have any health insurance (no extras, no hospital), under 37k annual income threshold. Would I have any benefit in getting this @easternculture? Sorry I'm new to this whole health insurance thingy :S

    • If your after gift cards you won't. You are already saving money by not paying the Medicare levy surcharge

  • EC, after I joined it says that in order to get the gift card I need to be holding the policy for 45 days instead of 30 days?

This is what they sent me via email:

Congratulations! By joining a combined Hospital and Extras cover you’re now on your way to receiving a $200 eftpos gift card!
After being with nib for 45 days we’ll send you an email with all of the details on how you can redeem your gift card.

According to their T&C it clearly says 30 days but after I joined the email indicates 45 days. Anyone else getting this?

    • not sure. maybe they got ozbargained ?

i got this when i signed up last month

Congratulations! By joining a combined Hospital and Extras cover you’re now on your way to receiving a $200 eftpos gift card!
At the end of your 30 day cooling off period, we’ll send you an email with all of the details on how you can redeem your gift card

    • Yes I got this as well. It is probably still worth it if you cancel after 45 days but i'm tempted to just cancel tomorrow and get a full refund.

  • Can you hold 2 PHIs at the same time?
I'd like to do this for the gift card, but worried by the NIB horror stories shared above. So I'm thinking why don't I just keep my current PHI (i.e. NOT transfer across) and just have NIB in addition to my current PHI? Not sure if this is possible though.

    • I am guessing it is possible, since you don't need to tell NIB that you are with someone else. They won't contact your current fund to cancel the existing policy. However, the fees charged attract a government subsidy, and you would not be eligible to claim that on both policies.

  • Has anyone received their gift card yet? I'm due for mine in 2 days. The welcome email from May 24th said I will receiving an email with details on how to claim to gift card after 30 days.

    • Not yet and I joined on the 16th of May. Online chat now:
It can take up to about 2 weeks after the 30 day cooling off period has passed for the emails to be sent. They are delivered by an external company that does them all in batches.

  • Anything to beware of if I'm just sticking with them for 2 months to get the $200 card, then switch to another more reputable insurer?

  • I signed up 27th may. I'd still be entitled to the NIB gift card if i transfer to the compare-the-market offer after the 27th june (past the 30 day cooling off period) before I receive the NIB gift card as I want to get in before their offer ends (30th June). I should be entitled to the NIB giftcard still yeah? Sorry my wording sucks.

    • They will send you an email after the 30th day your are with the fund with a link to claim the GC. Claim the gift card immediately and then transfer . That's what I'll be doing

      • Yeah thats what I was originally planning on doing. But if theres some delay and I dont get the link on my 30th day (27th June), I'd still expect to be entitled to the giftcard if I had transferred to another provide between then and the 30th June. There seems to be a few offers expiring 30th June so keen to get in by then.

      • I signed up on the 24th of May but still haven't got the email. Weird.

    • +2

      (c) the Eligible Product must be current and paid up to date as at the date of the Offer being redeemed;

You need to claim the giftcard before closing the policy; otherwise you are no longer eligible.

      • Great, just the info i was after
        Cheers

  • Been with them for 32 days now and still no gift card. Pretty annoyed. Will phone up tomorrow and cancel and expect them to send the gift card anyway seeing as I lived up to their T&Cs.

    • Dont be so sure about that. Look at LJackson's comment a couple above.

    • +1

Just checked with NIB via chat. Apparently the emails will be sent out on the 1st of July for eligible customers.

      • Great. Now have to be stuck with them for 1 more week.

  • Sneaky b@stards - they're now saying even though my 30 days has passed, i have to wait a FURTHER 30 days for the gift card - which they know full well takes us past June 30th so we don't switch to other offers.

    • +1

you can still sign up for another provider. After you receive your gift card email link, ask New PHI provider to cancel your old NIB from the date you joined them. As long as you don't make any claims from NIB in that period, they will refund you.

      • So in essence do you have 2 policies running concurrently for a while? If so - do I not reference my NIB policy when I sign up with say HCF?

        • +1

@digitalane No. You can call them later and be like "sorry I forgot to mention it in my sign up".

      • haha very clever ec

        • +2

Lol .. They still don't know we are the professionals

    • It's going to be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Having to wait another 30 days on top of the initial 30, the so called gift Eftpos card is paying for the 2x months insurance which would already have been paid.

should have read the term & conditions before applying

*10. Once a policyholder has satisfied the Entry Requirements in clause 6, the Promoter will email
the Eligible Entrant a letter of confirmation to their nominated email address to confirm that,
based on the information provided in each entry, the entrant has qualified for participation in
the Offer. This email will include a unique code and an email link to a website where the
Eligible Entrant must complete the claim form with their nominated delivery address and
unique code within 60 days of receiving their code letter of confirmation

*12. Each gift card will be mailed by the Promoter directly to the Australian residential address
provided to nib at time of entry, within approximately 60 days from date of entry. Any posting
and handling charges will be paid by the Promoter

*18. These terms are subject to change by publishing a notice on the website
www.nib.com.au from 15 May 2016, 60 days prior to the change taking effect.

  • Got a mail with a unique id to redeem the offer and get the eftpos card posted. happy :)

    • yay .. just got the email now too

time to redeem and switch to HCF for another $200 via the big switch deal

      • mate can u share some details around this switch. thanks

        • +2

let me do some research tonight at work for the best deal and ill update the OP.

        • @easternculture: thanks, that would be great.

        • +2

@easternculture: I signed up to the OurGo offer for $200 cash back ($100 after 3 months and $100 after 13 months) plus the $100 JB Hifi gift card (after 45 days I think). with HCF. Plus I'll get $200 back from Amex. I will be staying with HCF for more than 3 months, so I'll get the first $100 cash back and $100 JB card. Chances are I won't stay with them past this point next year because there will be new EOFY deals.

The other option is the Compare the Market $200 EFTPOS card offer, which in hindsight I should have gone for. You are eligible after 45 days, and have more flexibility than a JB Hifi gift card. The total value remains at $200. I guess I picked the first on the off chance that I'll still be with HCF in 13 months and get an extra $100.

        • @puffinfresh:

Thanks for that. You saved me the research. Might go for the Compare the Market Offer then

I still have the AMEX HCF offer that wouldn't register on my cards, but when i called AMEX customer service, they were happy to honor the $100 cashback on both my card and supplementary after i make the spend .

So that's another $400 waiting for me :)

        • @easternculture:

Thanks guys. Keep checking this post with interest. I've just got link to the NIB gift card now and going to sign up to the compare the market offer now.

        • +2

          @andyman1908:

we have successfully mastered the gift card inception for health insurance

        • @easternculture: I'm enjoying it I must admit :) I dont have an AMEX card and was just going to sign up with lowest cost HI (Budget Direct in my case) but didnt really work out if I could combine the compare the market offer with the BUPA offer mentioned by the OP.

        • @andyman1908:

          what is the BUPA offer?

        • @andyman1908:

Thanks. will do some research tonight.

        • @andyman1908:

BUPA one seems good but HCF also are waiving the 2 and 6 months waiting periods.

So i can get $100 worth of contact lenses with the HCF vs a $100 voucher with BUPA that i may not use.

        • @easternculture:
Some funds are offering second month free which may work for some.
I choose HCF with waiver to get some optical and cover some of next month's dental.

Will HCF cancel NIB for me?

        • @jaybot:

yes, remember to include you NIB member number in application

          Cheers

        • @easternculture: Thanks!

        • @easternculture: mate which one to go for, getting confused with all the talk below about hcf, compare market, amex and what not.

        • @joshmachine:
I ended up signing up to the cheapest HI (to avoid levy) being budget direct through comparethemarket offer. Thought about signing up ourgo offer but there werent any basic hospital only covers that they offered. Plus i think id like to keep shopping around after 45 days required to stay.

        • @andyman1908: thanks i went with comaprethemarket too and got BUPA assuming they give me another $100 there, fingers crossed.

  • +1

Got my code - bye bye NIB!

  • got my code :)

  • For those who are getting only $100 (rather than $200) for compare the market offer, pm me and ill send you the unique link for the $200 eftpos offer

I don't want to post it publicly just incase they remove it

    Cheers

    • So besides the Compare the market offer, its looks like theres the Ourgo one ($100 JB hifi voucher after 30days, $100 cashback after 3 months and another $100 after 13 months and the iselect one. Are there any others that offer giftcards? As the compare offer I'm only getting a $100 offer and not $200.

  • Easternculture, when did you get your email telling you how to redeem your giftcard? I joined 29th May and don't have the email but want to switch to HBF today.
