$200 EFTPOS Card When You Join Any Combined Hospital and Extra's Package @ NIB

1180

Been waiting for an offer like this since getting my $300 eftpos card from iSelect.

Things to note:

  • This deal is probably best for those who have PHI to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge. If your on a Private Insurance Cover for medical reasons, its probably not the best idea to be jumping from one fund to another

  • Check with your new Health Fund that they have transferred you waiting limits across within the 30 day cooling period.

I have also confirmed that all your waiting periods transfer from all your previous funds. Just make sure you either have the transfer certificates to provide to your new fund, or provide authorization to the new fund to request the transfer certificate. Now when you login to your new fund account, you will see the waiting periods from when you joined the new health fund. But this will be corrected manually when a claim is made based on all your previous transfer certificates.

You should get this in your email to confirm your eligibility if you've followed the right steps:

Congratulations! By joining a combined Hospital and Extras cover you’re now on your way to receiving a $200 eftpos gift card!
At the end of your 30 day cooling off period, we’ll send you an email with all of the details on how you can redeem your gift card.

Below is a Table that shows how much you would be paying extra in Tax if you didn't have Private Health Insurance

Threshold Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3
Singles $90,000 or less $90,001–$105,000 $105,001–$140,000 $140,001 or more
Families $180,000 or less $180,001–$210,000 $210,001–$280,000 $280,001 or more
Rates 0.0% 1.0% 1.25% 1.5%
Minimum MLS* $0 $900 $1312 $2100

MLS = Medicare Levy Surcharge

(g) the Eligible Entrant must have a valid email address applied to their policy; and

To summarise , I've been jumping from one health fund to another every few months and taking advantage of free eftpos and gift cards / vouchers and flybuys points .

I've earned approx $1000 in freebies which literally has paid off my PHI costs

I hope this is easy to get out

    • +4

all you do is provide the new health fund details of your old fund, and they do the rest

      • +1

Or you could just cancel if you really wanted to right? Waiting periods may be a concern for new policy holders (unless they're waived?)

        • +1

waiting periods and limits used get transferred to your new fund

i personally have PHI to avoid the LEVY

        • @easternculture: yes only if you already hold PHI, which is why I said "new policy holders". But to be more specific, completely new policy holders (i.e. Not currently holding PHI with any insurer) may be subject to waiting periods.

        • @illumination: thinking about cancel PHI, what would happen with LEVY?

        • @webtherapist:

You will pay more in Levy than what you pay for PHI

Keep switching from one fund to another , avoid the levy and get rewarded with gift cards

        • @easternculture: my friend stopped since this beginning of financial year, would it help if she joins back now?

        • @webtherapist:

not for the months that have already passed. He/she would still have to pay the levy for the months with no PHI

        • @easternculture: i see, thanks for the info.

        • +1

@easternculture: I remember they only count the last one. For example you have served all waiting period and are green to go. You move to a new fund with the same level of cover and stay for 3 months. Then you move to a third fund with same level of cover. Now you are considered as only served 3 months. I remember I have confirmed this with a few funds.

      ATTENTION: BUYER BEWARE
For those that won't make it to the 2nd page of comments, I felt it was my duty as an Ozbargainer to make a note here high up in the comments to alert you of some big issues with this deal.

Please see my other posts on Page 2 with a lot more detail on some major issues with Nib and similar funds.

Hoping to save people from potentially being out of pocket a lot more down the track just purely because of an EFTPOS card

  • What's Medibank's gift card fly buys offer?

    • +3

Last year it was a $200 Adidas Voucher with 20000 flybuys points for singles and $400 voucher / 50000 Flubuys for families
They are 90% likely to repeat it this year as per my inside sources

      • Someone just posted a Medibank deal. No cash, 50k Flybuys for families after 6 months. And a free month's worth of insurance.

        • Maybe substituting Gift card for 1 month free?

        • +1

@easternculture: Seems like. Not worth it when you have to stay with them for 6mo especially given how expensive they are.

        • @compacc:

          agreed

  • +2

    what's PHI?

    • +6

      This. Private Health Insurance!

  • +1

Shoot I'm switching health insurance then. Can you cancel after one month?

    • yep, minimum 1 month, then you qualify for the gift card

      • Fine with me.

      • -1

how much is one month membership on average?

    • i have the same Q? can you?

      • . Eligible Entrants must meet the following Entry Requirements (“Entry Requirements”):

        • if i Sign up my family i.e., two policy holders do i get 2 x $200 ?

        • @BrockLee:

as long as its 2 separate policies in 2 different names

        • @easternculture: its me, my wife and a kid. does that mean two separate policies in two names?

        • +2

          @BrockLee:

          That's one policy i think.

        • So as a current NIB customer, if I cancel my current policy - then immediately rejoin, I qualify?

        • @blaircam:
          the Eligible Entrant must not be a current policyholder, or have joined and cancelled an Eligible Product 2 months before or during the Offer Period;

        • @puffinfresh: Crap - current customers always get screwed.

        • I previously called up medibank while I was with them to enquire if I could cancel my membership and rejoin to get a new customer promo. They ended up giving me a discount that more than compensated the promo. Doesn't hurt to give them a call

        • @blaircam:

I wouldn't! Won't you get considered "uninsured" if you're over a certain age, then be stuck paying more for life?!

Also, only your most recent 'subscription' time carries over (see comment earlier). So if you swapped immediately you'd have to wait out the full waiting period again!

Don't mess with this stuff, you'll screw yourself over.

Shoot any business will surely make a lose when easternculture is involved.

Reminds me of this classic quote:
"Insurance is a heavily regulated industry.
In fact, the only consistent argument they have for increasing rates is the amount of fraud they withstand."
    -John Becker

    • +6

The fraud is from the Private Hospitals taking advantage of the Funds. Admitting patients to Intensive care for 3 - 5 days that do not require it. That's $3000 - $5000 per patient per day billed to the Fund.

      • -7

Can you please provide evidence of this fraud?

        • +15

i used to work for a e-health company and we worked a lot with health fund contracts. The incentive is on hospitals to milk the contracts to a tee. They'll basically force you out once youre over the short stay limit (2-3 days depending on what your surgery was) ans a myriad of other incentives to get as much bang for their buck out of the PHI companies. Ever been to a dentist and they try and make you get xrays? "just incase" They'll stick that fluoride mouth guard in. Doesnt cost you a cent but they back charge the PHI max rates. The health funds in turn up their rates and the cycle continues. The whole experience led me to believe that the whole concept of private health and privatising the health industry was a stupid idea. We should scrap all PHI incentives and pour that money into a public system. More like Norway, less like the US. That being said i'll probably jump on this free $200 for nothing marketing gimmick :D

      • +1

I can guarantee you that no patient is admitted to ICU without requiring it. ICU patients require comprehensive management and continuous monitoring that is not available on a normal ward (cardiac/respiratory/metabolic support, 1:1 nursing ratios). Patients are not discharged to the wards until it is safe.

+1 to this deal you have posted though!

        • +8

You have to actually hit the green button.

        • +1

          @sween64: +1 for your comment

        • +2

@onetwothree: I see what you did there (or rather didn't do). :P

  • What happens with the extra limits? If you have already used all of optical would you still get it again if you change?

    • +1

nope. Your usage gets transferred to your new fund. No double dipping

  • Should we wait a bit for the health fund frenzy for the best deal? Good deal nonetheless.

    • you should be able to switch again to anothe fund after 30 days = 24th June if you sign up today

      • do I still get the eftpos card if I swap to another fund after 30 days cooling off?

Also worth noting it is per policy (couples/families count as one eftpos)

        • +1

as long as you meet the eligibility criteria, then yes

Eligible Entrants must meet the following Entry Requirements (“Entry Requirements”):

  • I got the $300 iselect voucher and was just wondering if there's anything stopping me from moving to nib to take advantage of this deal?

    • +5

nothing is stopping you. its a free country

  • +1

It would be good unless you are someone who pay the annual premium before April to avoid the premium increase. For Medibank Private it could easily be $200-300 for a family policy.

    • +2

Id imagine most of us do it to avoid extra tax (levy).

SO jumping from one fund to another just makes it sweeter with the bonus gift cards

  • do your major waiting periods get moved over too?

    • yes. Your old fund sends your fund certificate to the new fund. Everything gets carried over.

  • Can we go from a couple policy to 2x single ones with nib and claim 400? I'm worried something may get screwed up especially since I'm moving from medibank who have a new system that's 100% garbage.

    • +1

Its one per person so as long as its in 2 separate names, you should be ok. Refer to eligibility criteria i posted in the comments above

    • I'm still with MyOptions with Medibank Private, as I saw recent policies were crap. Could you not have stayed on your old one?

      • me too!!

I'm not moving because MyOptions is good value (even if the increase is 7-8%!!!) :(

  • +1

    Shame I'm already with NIB.

I might move to AHM, get the $100 they're offering, and start this process of getting gift cards like you've described.

    • +17

I might start a forum topic to help others benefit from these deals

      • +1

Let me know if you do, please? I'm very keen for things like this.

      • +1

        Please do

      • +1

or a Wiki thread like the credit cards one

      • Please do! Noobs guide.

I've never had, needed, wanted private health.

I sold my house that was rented-out while living overseas… Now the taxman thinks I'm loaded, and wants to enter me.

Sooo… I have to get PHI.

        • +1

you must have kept it open then ;)

      • That sounds great. Would love to do PHI hopping to get gift cards and help save money. Currently PHI is too expensive for me

      • Sounds like a great idea. Currently, I'm thiking of cancelling my PHI or reducing it to the bare minimum coverage….too expensive for me especially when I don't use them. Thank you!

        • do you earn over $90k

        • @easternculture: Nope, not at all.

        • @sharethelove:

you don't really need it. unless you have a health condition and using you're PHI for that

        • @easternculture: Ya, that's what I'm thinking….I'm only using the dental though. I got it cos' it's for insurance….for just in case cos' I don't know the future…if I will need to use them when I'm older or if I earn above threshold….

        • @sharethelove:

I would recommend AHM extra's if your after Dental.

        • @easternculture: Thanks! I'm not sure if I should cancel or not…what if my circumstances change and I need the hospital cover when I'm older and unwell or earns more…

        • @easternculture: Hi EC, That amount quoted is including super or not. Thanks.

        • +1

          @azm:

Its your taxable income as per your group certificate

Super is taxed differently @ 15%

        • @sharethelove:

You would need to seek advice from a professional.

        • @easternculture: No worries, thank you very much for your help!

    • I am in the same situation.

      From AHM website:
"Join hospital and extras combined cover, including packages, and commence your policy on or by 31 May 2016 and maintain your policy for 3 consecutive months."

This NIB policy offer closes on June 30.

      EDIT: Sad news

      From the T&C:
"the Eligible Entrant must not be a current policyholder, or have joined and cancelled
an Eligible Product 2 months before or during the Offer Period;"

So I guess current NIB policyholders can't participate :(

  • +3

ethics are a little questionable but not outside the rules I guess

and not as corrupt as the free water bottle lol

    upvote for me!

  • You are a Legend.

  • +7

Yea no sympathy for health funds. They're up there with coles and woolies. Play within the rules, let them fight for ur $$$ and make some money in the process

  • EasternCulture, when switching from one to the other, will the original one refund the unused portion of the month? Or do you need to time it correctly? I'm currently with Bupa but have been considering switching to a "couples" plan with my wife, but I might do a few switches over the next few months to take advantage of some of these offers :).

    • +4
      • you provide your new health fund with the membership details of old fund on sign up
      • new fund will request certificate and cancellation from old fund from date of new fund join date
      • old fund will send you a cheque with any refund from date of cancellation = date of joining new fund
      • Awesome. Sounds like a no brainer then :)

  • +1

    Thanks OP, transferred.

  • BTW apart from entering existing policy details is there anything i need to specifically do or everything will be taken care of at the backend including cancelling existing direct debits etc?

    • your new fund will take care of everything for you

      • Thanks, just noticed that you had already answered it above. cheers mate

  • Question, I'm 31 in August, should I grab this now or wait right up until the last minute before commencing a life of paying exorbitant PHI premiums?

    • start now. a $200 gift card is awaiting

  • +5

    Buyer beware
As a surgeon I can tell u that NIB specialise in fine print screwing you over. If any patient is in tears because the cover they have been sold is a dud they r with nib or next medibank
You virtually couldn't pay me to join nib , they are looked on as a second class health fund by doctors

    • +3

I agree. I was about to post similar message. I was with nib on cheapest product. It turned out to be junk product. It's really surprising regulators allow them to offer that product. It was literally worthless. When I had to use hospital I had to pay out of pocket and they didn't cover anything. Other insurers don't even offer that low level product.

So beware and see what's included.
