Not sure how these are so "portable" when you need to plug them into a wall socket.. Most devices now are super easy to setup only requiring a cable which connects straight to your phone.

    • not backing the product… but its powered at 5.4V, 1.1A through what looks like a standard DC plug.
Could probably easily hack together (or even buy) a usb to DC cable and connect to a powerbank or something.

    • was gonna say the same thing

  • mono sound output is a deal breaker

    • Deal title misleadingly says SpeakerS

But actually it's just ONE SPEAKER for $10.

      • yeah that brings my piss to a boil also.. total lie

  • note that it requires AC power. defeats the point of a portable mini speaker for me

  • I bought one of these for $7 last year at Dick Smith during their first bargain galore day.

Anyway, they have no volume control and NO on/off switch.

  • A bit off-topic. I'm after a pair of unpowered speakers that connects to an audio source via 3.5mm jack. Not even sure what they're called - passive speakers? All of the speakers I've seen so far are either AC- or USB-powered. Thanks.

    • you want earphones. The 3.5mm jack can't supply enough power for any decent-sounding speaker.

by the way, a passive (or unpowered) speaker is a speaker without a built-in amplifier, i.e. the sound has to be amplified before reaching the speaker - nothing to do with the power source.

      • Not necessarily. It depends on what you consider to be a "decent sound". Yes, all solutions would be limited by inability of the 3.5mm jack to provide sufficient power, and none would be able to output high power sound. BUT it all depends on application, and your needs. Here is an example of inexpensive and rather impressive product from Philips: http://www.philips.com.au/c-p/SBP1120_98/universal

Also there are many models from different manufacturers with build in batteries, thus allowing the speakers to be charged in advance, and then used from 3.5mm socket without an external power source (well over 10 hours, depending on model).

        • Thanks for the suggestion, derek324. These days almost all portable speakers are BT/NFC-enabled with built-in batteries. Don't want the hassle of charging my speakers all the time. Plan to use it indoors with an mp3 player, so don't need a big sound. Back in the day, most of the external desktop speakers would be passive. Can't seem to find them in OW/HN anymore.

        • Inexpensive? Yes. Impressive? I'm guessing you don't own one.

I am a firm believer than no external speakers solely powered by the 3.5mm jack will sound significantly better than the built-in speakers of a decent smart phone simply due to technical limitations.

        • @blablabla23: What I do own/do not own is irrelevant. The fact is that all phone speakers are tiny, hidden away, and are acoustically crippled. Example (iPhone 6): https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+6+Speaker+Replacement/29…

Are 2x50mm passive drivers sufficient to provide powerful HiFi sound? Definitely no. But a bit better? Yes. Shades of grey.

      • I thought "passive speakers" would be the correct term. Did a search on eBay, and all it came up with are 300W-1000W speakers. :-) All I want are passive speakers for my MP3 player.

  • I bought the bassburgers from harvey norman, they were reduced from 20 or 25 down to $10
    to me its ok,

would these be better than these ones?
