Free 2 Week Trial of YouTube Red @ YouTube Music App

130

Just downloaded the YouTube Music app and was told that I had received a free 14 day trial of Youtube Red. I then received an email telling me the benefits of YouTube Red and also telling me that I was still eligible for the 1 month trial. So can get 1 month and 2 weeks with this deal. Still think this thing is a bit of a gimmick, but if it's free I don't see a reason not to get it!

    YouTube Red will FAIL

    • +3

I don't think Red will fail.

Firstly, the Youtube that we all know and love is still available to everyone, and it's still far and away the best and most popular video site. There are competitors like Vimeo and Dailymotion, but they don't have a 100th of the content and most people have never heard of them. In short, Youtube (as a free service) is already winning by a mile in terms of audience and traffic.

Secondly, Youtube Red doesn't need to be a big commercial success to be worthwhile. I don't think too many people will be falling over themselves to get access to the current small selection of exclusive content, or would be willing to pay $10 a month to ditch the ads. But that doesn't matter to Youtube - Google gets paid regardless, either by direct payment for a subscription, or via ad revenue. So it doesn't really have to make money.

Lastly, Red is more like a "bonus feature" - the main attraction is Play Music, which is a decent service that's reasonably priced and works across most platforms. And given that Play Music has strong links into Android and other popular Google services, getting an ad-free video service into the bargain is just cake.

That's my reasoning - JV, feel free to rebut or lay out your own thoughts.

And that is why I signed up to YouTube Red yesterday. Bye bye Spotify, hello Play Music.

    • Why the negs. It's true

YouTube Red is such a long and convoluted name, why didn't they just name it RedTube? Hmmm…

why didn't they just name it RedTube?

      Come again ?????

Some marketing dude needs to be fired.

  • Smart way is getting a Play music subscription, which gets you Youtube Red thrown into the deal. Dunno but like the ability to be able to have YT on my phone running in the BG (yes I know there are apps to do this like FireTube).

Plus with Play music you can use carrier billing, I didn't see a way to do carrier billing on YTR.

Also the trial is one month or at least that's is what I was offered.

    • Yes, this is the way to get the best value. Get the Play Music trial, not the Red trial - you get a free month instead of 14 days.

Carrier billing is the secret sauce that makes this a great deal. If you're on Telstra Prepaid, you can use your credit to effectively get both Music and Red for free. Bonus points for using a family plan, which means you can also share both services with 5 other people.

      • Yep just switched over to Freedom Plus, didn't know what I was missing out on! How do add a family plan?

        • The family plan is an option in the Play Music app on Android - just go to Settings and you should see it.

      • @klaw81 you can actually get both. have to get 14 day trial first though

  • I can imagine all the searches popping up and causing trouble….Did you mean RedTube?

I dont know why they decided to call it YouTube Red, every time I read it, I open up a incognito window and start booking hotels.

    • Yeah, hotels…

      • -2

So you pay $ to listen to music while you are in hotel room? Hmmm I thought radio is free.

  • Marketing fail. Why red… Red music? Red light? Red red? From so many colours…

    • +1

Probably because YouTube branding has always been red???

    • +1

      Why not YouTube Plus?

      • This actually sounds good.

  • Everything that YouTube red offers is available to Windows phone users for apps like My tube, tube cast and many more
