  • What are H.K. Airways like?

  • Hong Kong Airlines is not owned by Hongkonger. The company is owned by mainland Chinese "Hainan Airlines"

The difference? Don't want to start a fight here. Ask your Chinese friends why they'd rather fly with Cathay Pacific then China Southern Airlines.

Well if that really is a problem, you do realise Air China has a 30% stake in Cathay Pacific?

I traveled several times with Chinese airlines and I had a much better experience than British Airlines (awful trip), Alitalia (half trip with Quantas very awful), Jetstar (my holiday at Melbourne airport), Quantas (noisy bogans back from holiday).

        there's no u in Qantas

        • Which raises a very interesting question…

Why is it pronounced as "Kwantas" even though there's not a single u in it?

        • @songford: Qantas initially stood for "Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services". Obviously its a bit bigger than just Queensland and the NT now…

      • Not sure if it is the airline's fault that their passengers are noisy?

        • I also traveled with Thai Airline (among others) and I can assure you that only on Quantas (I leave the U so trolls got something to do) I traveled with bogans.

        • @dealhunt: Don't you mean bougans? ;)

        • @greenpossum: nope, too many trolls already ;)

    • Why? I'm a Chinese and I would much prefer Chinese Southern.

But I guess the main reason is that Chinese Southern runs direct flights to Shanghai from major hubs in Australia. The difference between Cathay and major Chinese airlines in term of service is pretty marginal IMHO, and if I'll have to do a stop midway regardless I'd rather travel with Qantas.

    • Been with them several times. The staff are quite attentive and always try to solve any problem fast. However the food is very awful. Dry, cold, small portion… YMMV. Just another neg for this airlines is they are well known for delay to locals and it is not uncommon to have flight rescheduled.

These are not fully flat beds, I'm pretty sure. On top, they only give 30kg for Business, when companies like Malaysia Airlines give 30kg if you're a frequent flyer with them, in Economy.

I've never flown them personally, but I was just trying to find out what they look like online, so from a hard product perspective, nothing special.

  • Their business class promo vid is… interesting to say the least

At $1800 how is that a bargain?

Its cheap for business but geez… just go premium economy with cathay and save your bucks so you can buy more crap when you're actually in hong kong

its only a 7hr flight anyway
