  • Just get a square metre carpet tile with the rubber backing from Bunnings for $25…

Great point BradH13, that will work okay on a hard floor but has been know to move around on the carpet. The chair mat posted above has the little grippers that hold it in place on carpet.

The other benefit of a plastic chair mat over a carpet tile is that it makes rolling a lot easier than carpet.

    • +2

They really don't work on carpet flooring.

last carpet mat i purchased from a big store was a pvc that left indentations in the plastic after a few hours use. it made it hard to roll around afterwards. do these leave any indentations after prolonged use?

    • would love store rep to reply to my question. do these leave imprints at all?

        Hi geezee

Do you want me to send you a sample to test? it is difficult to know without knowing the carpet and underlay thickness.

If so please email me your address to [email protected]

        • +2

Email sent. Thank you for the quick reply.

  • Would love a good deal on a hard floor chair mat. I have a carpet one but unfortunately it's no good in my new place which has hardwood floors.

    • Ikea

      • I've never seen one in Ikea, have you?

        • Ikea does sell chair mat they call it "KOLON Floor Protector" but unfortunately it does not any studs underneath the mat so it moves around. If you can prevent it from moving such as having your desk or a drawer unit on top of it then it is not a bad product.

        • @Mr Bargain:

Ikea ones are crap, had two both partially held under by tables with double sided all round and they moved out of place within days.

Purchased the ones from Costco (can't remember the brand but made in America and cost $30-40+ each and it's holding all right)

Key lesson learnt - don't save by getting cheap crap, gives u more grief in the long run getting annoyed at things that just don't do what they are supposed to do

        • @LurvinOZB:

Agreed, the Costco ones are weaponry. Mine is still going strong after 3 or so years and it gets used daily.

I bought an Ikea one as well but it doesn't even compare.

$35 including free delivery is an absolute bargain.

$45 for a much smaller one at Officeworks without delivery.

      Nice display pic ;)

    • $35 including free delivery is an absolute bargain.

Except the ones I got from them in the last offer all developed cracks after a few months of use. I've also a mat from Officeworks which is made from a softer material and does not have the same problem. No one in household is overweight and the chairs have plastic castors.

For those with carpet, I made my own 'ghetto' chair mat.

Place a large rug (upside down, so the rug 'sticks' to the carpet, and acts as a protective cover) on the carpet.
Place some sheet metal (I used the plain aluminium) on the rug where the chair will be.
Place another large rug (this works well) (right side up) on top.

The chair moves around easily, and this will leave no marks or indentations on the carpet.
    :)

Your combo is way more expensive. Also with the amount of layers, you might as well sit on the table.

      • -2

Maybe, but how many of these 'toughened' PVC mats will you go through after they crack and breakup. ;)

My whole desk (120x80cm) & chair movement area fits snuggly on top of the rugs.

        • I owned one for 10 years and still going(PVC), i am not sure if you would like to use your one for he life time you live.

Your desk is quite small IMO, the material for a large table must be more expensive.

          Nothing personal just discussion.

    • Good idea. I reckon the best way is to mine a diamond so that it is the same post as the Op. Attach, through fusion, titanium feet, 44 per square inch to the bottom and lather unicorn droppings in an anti clockwise motion to the surface.

Once complete, uniformly surface grind the edges with a diamond belt to ensure the titanium feet are rounded to a 25 micron radius.

Guaranteed smooth rolling and no indentations.

Edit: or you can buy one of these

I bought one of these during the last sale— very nice product & $35 shipped…I have no idea how you can do it?

Someone else here said their's "cracked with light use in a few months"?

Well, I do I.T. consulting & a LOT of my time is spent in my chair on this same mat. I'm not over-weight, but I'm 6'1" & heavy enough- lol.

Mine is still perfect. The person above should have written to Mat Shop when it developed cracks.

I might get another for my son.

    Ta.

Thanks for sharing your experience, convinced me to get a couple for the study.

The mat is large enough to spin 180 every so often so you don't wear in the same spot (which does happen as we tend to sit in the same space in our chairs).

I consider it like flipping a mattress. Anything I can do to get the most use out of something, I do!

        ;)

  • Any chance of sale on smaller mats?

  • Just remember when you send them DONT wrap them up with tape directly on the mat. I have one here with a dirty black skid mark that will not come off. Looks horrible.

WD-40 is very good to remove any type of sticky grime. I also use it to remove little tar bits that get on the underside of the car during street renos.

      :)

    • If you wanted to remove any glue from tapes / stickers etc. just buy one of the followings from bunnings. Isopropyl Alcohol, De-Solv-It, Goof Off, Goo and Stain Remover, Goof Off, Glue and Stain Remover, White Spirits or Methylated Spirits. I personally like to use Isopropyl Alcohol because is an alcohol it just evaporates off but it is expensive.

      • WD-40, in my own testing of various materials over time, is the least likely to dissolve the underlying surface materials.

I've seen even alcohol do this to certain plastics. As with any porous surface, test a very small area first.

        FYI

  • Before making a purchase be sure you know your carpet + underlay is between 7-12mm or else it will rip each thread off your carpet out one by one if your carpet+underlay is too thick. That's why they have different chair mats for different pile thickness carpet.

  • Hey OP, Deal for hard floors? :)

  • Aaargh it says sold out, I'm so sad I was going to get one to put under my son's high chair :'(

  • +1 Says sold out. Missed out…
