Considered the best Kodi box you can get. I've been waiting for a deal on this.

4K Netflix (only box that can), HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2. Gamestream from your gaming PC with a compatible Nvidia gfx card. (1080p60 over gigabit ethernet). The most powerful Android TV box.

Multiplayer sale. Shield TV for the normal price, plus a free second controller.
Also available with the Shield TV Pro for $299.99USD ($407.37AUD) plus post, but I'd suggest the regular with an extra SD card for that price (you can use expandable memory for apps).

Postage to Perth is $20.39USD. So all in all $299.31AUD delivered for the 16gb non-plus version.

If you want a second controller, this is the cheapest the whole package has ever been. Last Black Friday you could get the console for $150USD, and the cheapest a second controller has been is $52.50USD

  • So this will be 110V with a US plug ?

    • +1

Universal 110V/240V, but yes, US plug. You'll need an adapter, but not a step-down converter.

    • +1

mine came with the 100-240 powersupply. Just need an adapter for us plug.

    • +2

Yes, get a good 240V plug. It'll slip out of the universal plugs without any strong grip on the leads (such as the cheap ones from Coles) due to the power pack's weight.

If I were home I'd take a photo of what I'm using. And use it on a power board gravity will make sure it doesn't pop out unexpectedly.

      • hahaha .. you described my problem beautifully … Im using a cheapie from china and it regularly get knocked out easily!

        • +1

Since its unlikely to ever be taken back to USA for use, also consider super-gluing the cheap US pin adapter to the body of the AC adapter.

      • +2

Just bend the pins with pliers 😉

        • +3

Dunno why so many downvotes - I've done this on multiple devices successfully.

        • @Domingo:
          This sounds so dangerous

        • @cjb: It's not really.

The difference between a US and AUS device that is internally 110-240v is literally the angle of the pins poking out of the device. Buying one of those crappy plastic adapters is just a metal connector that takes the straight US pins in and gives the angled AUS pins out.

If you bend the pins so they are twisted to the same angle as an AUS plug, you can put it in the wall without having a cheap piece of plastic with some metal inside, which is probably somewhat of a fire hazard anyway.

        • +1

          @Domingo:
The difference between 240v and 110v can be in the wiring and insulation. Insulation for 240v needs to be thicker, whereas wiring for 110v should be thicker.

If the connector or cable is designed for 110v solely, it may not be completely compatible. I would hope there is sufficient safety margin to accommodate it, but I wouldn't be twisting pins with pliers, in case it weakens the joints and wires or pins are exposed when you pull it out one day and it breaks. I would be safe but I have kids…

        • @skyva: A device that is internally 110-240v is compatible with both 110 and 240v power outlets. Like this USB charger on my desk right now.

We're essentially talking about using one of these.

Once you've plugged the device into the adapter, the same pins still have the same power running through them. Electrically it is the same (or slightly worse off because of the additional physical connections you've made, but you aren't replacing the pins, you're just plugging them into something else.

I'm not suggesting you wiggle them back and forth 500 times with a set of pliers. You grab it down its length on the two flat sides and using the minimum force required, put a slight bend in the pins so that they are at the correct angle. This way you don't have an extra device plugged into your wall outlet, which is usually fairly low quality and in my experience, doesn't grab on to the pins tightly meaning your device can fall out.

  • quick question, how do you expand the memory? is there like a spot for an SD card or HDD in terms of internal expansion from 16gb to 500gb as stated in the other models.

    • From what I have read the physical dimensions of the 16gb is actually different from the Pro. So you can't drop a HDD into the 16gb. If you look at the ports on the back (http://media.bestofmicro.com/X/G/500164/gallery/3-NvidiaShie…) there is a microSD slot, and 2xHDMI 3.0 ports. The latest OS will allow you to use the microSD slot for apps.

      • You can't insert a HDD/SSD into the 16GB, nor alter the 500GB in the Pro.

  • Can Shield streaming h.265 10bit video format fluently?

    • +1

Not sure. I'm getting one because it does a great job of playing h.264 10-bit (software decoding). http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=165716&page=2

If I remember right, it does hardware decoding of 10 bit 265, but only displays it at 8 bit? Can't fully remember. Maybe have a look on the kodi forums.

      http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?138451-Nvidia-Shield-4k-x265-100mbps-10-bit-4-2-2-(Question)

Depends on the format used but for what Netflix and co. may end up using it'll work since it's the same one that other devices have such as Xbox On

    • +1

Yes. Works natively (no transcoding) on mine :)

    • Yes it works perfectly and it's the only one in the market that can do it well

  • What game can you play on that box ?

    • it's android, so lots of them

      • +1

Android TV, just to avoid confusion, not regular old Android.

        Pros: Netflix 4K
Cons: Less apps from the play store. But you can get many working by sideloading.

        • +1

          you can get many working

You can use all apps by using hacked Google Play or sideloading.

You can play all games for all GPU and Tegra GPU.

You can play all Shield Exclusive titles.

        • @Diji1: Nice!

        • @Diji1: Not quite all. Im using mine as an arcade emulator / mame / snes / N64. There are a few issues with the emulators and getting them to work and also they wont necessarily populate to the installed apps on the front screen (ie: hidden away in other menus).

    • +2

If you have a PC with a newish nVidia card you can use NVIDIA GameStream and Moonlight to stream from your PC to the TV.

      • Its a shield…..that tech should be built in…..

  • can you install paradox on it?

  • Going to ask a really dumb question here…

Can Kodi be run as a client to connect to a Media PC on a home network and share it's media?

    • +1

      Yes, assuming it's Windows 7+.

      http://kodi.wiki/view/SMB/Windows

      Homegroup method works great.

      • How about if it's installed on a Sony Android TV for example, or say a console/phone. Will that cause issues?
Or is that purely the Media PC that needs to be Windows 7? Just seems the program isn't overly simple to setup for sharing… only on the machine it's on.

        • +1

Kodi is a client, so it will need to read form some data point. For the Shield, it is actually best to run SPMC, the Android specific version of Kodi, it is done by the ex Kodi Andoird maintainer.
I have 2 Shields reading media from my NAS. You can setup sharing on Windows via SMB, or NFS if you have the correct version. NFS is preferred over SMB.

No issue running multiple devices with Kodi or SPMC or both. Ideally you have a central data point and run MySQL to sync the played points and library, so one scan updates all. Or you can use Emby as the media server and then the Emby add on for Kodi (SPMC) as I do for better metadata. Again no issue for multiple devices running Kodi or SPMC and easier to configure than MySQL.

You can have both Kodi and SPMC installed at the same time, I still have both but only use SPMC.

This is the package to get if you're gaming on it, or you don't want to wait to see if the remote will ever go back on a bundled deal again. Remote is perfect if you're mainly streaming videos. Mic is excellent to use. The controllers do have mics as well.

Either way you want at least two controllers (or 1x controller, one remote) for the Shield so while one is charging you can still use it.

    • I was kind of hoping for the remote bundle, but I'm starting to think I won't use the remote.
I have a Harmony Ultimate One, and the remote doesn't exactly look like it has anything that will make me want to use it over the Harmony. Or am I mistaken?

      • If you already have a remote that works (or will work) then two controllers is probably better value for money.

Just check Online that it does first.

        • +1

I use to use the remote it came with, but with CEC I just use my Samsung remote and it works perfectly fine. Never used the voice search as it didn't work in either Netflix or Kodi (I think it might work in Netflix now?) and because it's set up in my bedroom I kept on losing the remote anyway.

      • I have a harmony ultimate as well and works fine. I still have the remote (came bundled when I bought it awhile back) which gets used mainly for the headphone jack on the remote :)

        • No extra mucking around you needed to do? I'm getting people telling me you need to set it up as IR, and Bluetooth and all this other stuff.

          Thanks

      • If using a One, buy a Flirc as well to get full control.

        • I'll buy a Flirc later down the track, I think. How limited is the remote functionality without one? Any different through CEC?

        • @Morien:

If you plan on using Kodi (or SPMC) get the Flirc now, now and now. Save on the freight and the pain of not having it. Not all commands from the Logitech via IR are possible. Most likely Logitech's fault. They know about it and nothing is done. I have Flircs on both my Shield for my harmony 650s (basically the same controls as the One)

If you really want some fun, read the harmony thread on the Nvidia forums - https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/842945/shield-andro…

          TLDR, get a Flirc!!!!!!!!

        • @snuke:

          Ok ok! :D
Does the flirc do away with lag as well?

        • @Morien:

          Yes, I have no lag.

        • @snuke: Thankyou :)

  • Tempted to upgrade one of my Amazon fire TV (gen 1) boxes - any cons?

    • No native Amazon Prime.

      • Don't use it - not sure about no remote though. Guess u can use a fliirc and Logitech 650

        • Apparently fliirc works great. I'll be getting one.

        • I use 650 and Flirc, great combo, excellent result.
Apart form no Amazon Prime which you don't use, no drawbacks, destroys the Fire TV (every gen)

  • damn wish you could stream from a HIS r9280x would be great I assume this is only available to NVIDIA branded GFX

  • -2

Considered the best Kodi box you can get.

    Debateable.

If you don't want to play games there's a lot of other Kodi boxes that play everything just the same and cost much less.

    • +3

Depends on needs, of course. But this one is afaik the only one to support 4K Netflix, and I could find no better to play hi10p h264 files.

      • How about compared to say an Intel i5 NUC?

        • Cost a lot more.

    • What would be best if mainly being used as media player?

      • If you are just playing local media, with no special requirements such as hi10p, then the Mini-x players get high praise.

        • Do you recommend Minix Neo U1 for media player? thanks :)

        • @k3nn3th323: I have no experience with it personally. I've been holding out for the Shield.

        • What stopped me with Minix was that Netflix could only be SD, and would never be HD according to them. Stopped considering them then and there.

Not sure what chips they use, but if Rockchip, they will have issues with Kodi and SPMC from now on as all support was dropped due to Rockchips crappy API usage.

  • I bought one some time ago but am not really using it — yes I know you can run Kodi and play Android TV games, but is there anything else that's worthwhile doing on this?

    • +1

I use it to watch my security cameras as well.
      4K YouTube
      4K Netflix
      HDMI 2.0 60p 10bit output for photos
      Games
Sideload apps? HGTV or other IPTV services.
Add VPN client to watch international TV services.

  • hrmmm… been waiting for a price drop on the shield tv for a while.
decent deal if you have the use for the 2nd controller (mainly for gaming purposes).
but Amazon, why no discount on the shield 16gb + remote bundle? for those wanting to use the device as a pure media streamer, the remote bundle @ that price would have sold me.
guess I'll just wait till there is a discount on the remote bundle!

    • Tempted to just sell the second controller on ebay

      • yeah, that's an option. there is one on sale on eBay atm for AUD$99.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NVIDIA-Shield-Wireless-Controller…

Am hoping that amazon will drop prices on other bundles in lead up to EOFY sales next month!

        • I dont think the US financial year end is the same as ours.

        • @skysurfer:

          Correct, they use calendar year.

        • You'd be better off waiting til Black Friday (As the post mentions, the lowest price for the console in USD was in Black Friday last year).
This machine is very capable and I personally don't think it'd become obslete for a long time.

  • +1

you can also use Xbox 360 wireless controller. all functional aside from the continuous blinking of the led light around the xbox logo

  • Marshmallow update would allow you to use the SD card or USB drive like the internal drive.
I was thinking about grabbing 500gb one instead, but if you can use that feature, it might be better to go with 16GB one.
    https://shield.nvidia.com/blog/android-marshmallow-6-update-…

    • Depends on what you want to do with it, it is not as simple as it sounds. Watch this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InujLd2k2Ik

      • Kinda thought that wouldn't really bother me since, I'd probably leave the SD card in there forever.
That said, fair point, how you can utilise the adoptive storage'd depend on what you'd want to do with it.

  • If anyone ends up with a spare one of these controllers, I'd be happy to buy off them.

    • PM'd for future

  • If anyone is considering getting this, what I do recommend is, try and see whether you are eligible for the gift card promotion that they run.
I believe this is targeted (as in only some people would be eligible), but if you are eligible, reloading USD $100 would give you additional USD $5.

    https://www.amazon.com/b/ref=s9_acss_bw_sc_gcshowr1_ah_s1?_e…

  • I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I'm getting around $315 shipped to Brisbane instead of $299? Is that right?

    • Shipping for me was just over $20USD.
      So 16gb for $199 + a bit over $20USD, Pro for $299 + a bit over $20USD.

Edit: Oh, I see, you're talking conversion rate?
Amazon have TERRIBLE conversion rates. Charge in USD and you'll get a better price. (28 degrees, citibank, bankwest plat, and so on)
