  • Are these things any better than just using your phone to tether?

    • +2

      doesn't waste your phone battery.

  • Got relatives visiting from overseas in July… Description says "to use in Australia within 30days" - does anyone know, is this 30 days from purchase? Or can I make the 30days commence in July?

    cheers

There's a SIM in the packaging, you have to activate it. It's typically 6mths-2yrs expiry.

    • +1

30 days from activation of the sim

  • Band 28?

    • This makes me laugh.
Anyway, I would hope so as it is 4G Telstra.

      • It's advertised as 4G, not "4GX" in Telstra terms, so I wouldn't expect 700MHz.

        Seems like a "no"

        http://www.zte.com.au/telstra/MF90.htm

        LTE 1800 MHz
        UMTS 850, 2100 MHz

        • Cool, thanks for clarifying. I forgot about the 4GX thing.

        • So this unit supports only LTE 1800 MHz, does this mean it would preform worse in some areas compared to this one http://www.zte.com.au/telstra/MF910.htm that supports LTE 700, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz? Not all frequencies is available in all areas? Sorry I`m a noob.

@saffers: 'yes', but you can check your nearby towers on oztowers.com or similar sites, if you stay in the one location.

@saffers: The more frequencies the better your reception

  • Well, as it seems like it lacks some frequencies which is a big deal, almost all of them have some issues.
The question is, if you have a 4G phone, or if not, why not investing your money and buy a reasonable cheap 4G phone which has a lot more benefits (like easier onscreen setting, making calls, better battery life, huge storage, faster response, easy trouble shooting, backup phone, …) and then use its reliable wifi hotspot or USB tethering?
What is the benefit of having another brick in your pocket? I have 2 of these gadgets, one USB, and one wifi, which I haven't used for few years now. Am I missing something?

    • reasons why i bought one:

      • i have a large data allowance i dont use up, so with a shared sim i let others in my household use my data allowance through this (great for travelling, road trips)
      • rather use this instead of gobbling up my battery life while tethering..
      • its only $24.50
      • Sure it depends on your situation and what you like better, but I guess people could benefit from what I pointed earlier with a backup 4G phone or could buy a power bank or an extra battery for their main phone for less than $24.50 (that is what I did). My phone does not use that much battery for tethering but my wifi gadget runs out after 1-3 hours. Plus a huge difference in speed and response, as this gadget lacks a wide range of 4G frequencies, it would suffer from poor reception in certain circumstances. I probably would buy one if it was free just for included data.

I probably would buy one if it was free just for included data.

I will probably get any available stock if it was free for just the cable and charger. if it was free you are not buying just grab it.

        • @LoveBargain15: Right on, you got me there but not 100%. I would not just garb it because it is free. There are a lot of free offers here that I pass. Many of them are useless (for me) and some are not worth the time and hassle, just imagine you have to fill the form or complete a transaction and then wait and go to Post office or to your mailbox to get something literally useless!

          @pal:

I have a post office box which I go here once a week so it is not a concern for me.

    • So, pal, when my relatives arrive from overseas - should they use this device? Or should they just buy a "reasonable cheap 4G phone" as you suggest?

Serious question. I'm assuming that you are completely wrong and I should buy this thing. But just on the off-chance that you know what you're talking about - please advise me accordingly.

      • Optus Prepaid 4G Alcatel Pixi 4.5 for $34.50 @ Coles might be a better deal for you.

  • Is it unlocked?

    • Aldi also uses the Telstra network so it should work on their sims too.

  • Bought this from Coles, but the WPS function on this modem seems not working, the wifi signal lost after press the WPS button, anyone has the same problem?
