I'm in Vic and bags are free ….. so what happens at the self service checkout ……. someone counts how many bags you use and adds to final bill, or the are no self service checkouts at coles and safeway ?

In Tassie, the semi-transparent thin black plastic bags aren't available at all at the checkouts. The only option is the thick white bags, and you choose how many you need & then pay for them at the self-service checkout.
Don't buy them. Just go through the self-serve checkouts and double bag your stuff. I have a good 50-60 bags accumulated from them alone. I also have a crap-load of 10 and 20 cent pieces too….
