Cheapest MFP Printer/Scanner to Run?

Hi, we are looking for an affordable MFP scanner/printer for the home.

Would like a sheet feeder, duplex, mono laser, ethernet (WIFI would be a bonus) but would also like to be the cheapest to run…so we figured the toner can be separately replaced without also replacing the drum at the same time.

Trouble is there are a lot of reviews out there but not many reviews on the actual running cost.

Any recommendation please?

Thanks

  • If you're into inkjets, the Epson EcoTank WorkForce ET-4550 Multi-Function Printer would be the cheapest to run. The ink refills are $25 RRP for 140ml bottles, which yield around 10,000-12,000 pages. Startup cost may be high, but your cheaper printer is subsidized by expensive ink refills. Heaps cheaper than laser at a fraction of a cent.

    If you don't print that many pages, Fuji Xerox Docuprint DPM225Z is great as a mono laser MFP. Printing with a genuine toner comes to about $0.05/page excluding paper.

    You will probably only see savings after printing 11-12k pages on the Epson at RRP.

    • how does that compare to standard inkjet with a CISS?

    • Thanks buddy. That gives me a place to start!

    I use this: http://www.brother.com.au/products/multi-function-centres/mo…

    We use it for our small home office so it does maybe 10-20 prints a day, works well. Initial cost was around $220ish from Officeworks pricematch, but takes aftermarket toners which are usually around $20-30 for a pair on eBay.

    Mono laser, duplex, wifi. But if you do a heap of ADF scanning this has a nifty feature that it actually has two scanners, so it can do double sided automatic feeding scanning in one pass! Saves a lot of time and paper jams. Converted all our documents to paperless using this scanner, I think the scan count is around 5000 pages duplex so far. If ADF Duplex scanning is your thing, this MFC is sensational.

    Came down from a big Samsung office colour printer which was just no end of issues, much happier with the small brother.

    One thing though, wifi is pretty slow especially for scanning, so ours is hooked directly into our ethernet switch.

    • thanks for that Bonsaichop. Scanning wise we have a dedicated Fujitsu scansnap that we used for the past 4 years to convert our paper to paperless. But that Duplex scanning on the Brother would still be a handy feature.

      I will certainly check that out. Thanks again.

      Edit: U had that at a very good price. Officeworks now selling this printer for $299!

      • I did a pricematch with Megabuy I think it was. Did it over the phone and had them deliver it to me for free.

        • Was just at officeworks to check out this printer. There is a cheaper 2703DW which is almost identical to the 2740 but cost $229. What do u think of this one?

          @jeeg:
          The reason's I'd be steering away from that model are;
          - No Duplex scanning
          - No Duplex Printing
          - 32mb Memory which if you're going to start scanning stuff becomes a very slow process because it cannot buffer the data internally. Same goes with printing, especially PDF documents with images, it'll print 1-2 pages, then have to wait for the buffer to be filled from the computer again before it starts again. The odd print here and there, no worries. Having to print 40 lecture slides 30 min before my partner's lecture is about to start and I still have to drive her to uni? Forget it.

          I researched the heck out of mono duplex MFC machines before getting the 2740 and found that nothing else could beat it in features, simplicity with scanning (two scanners for one pass duplex scanning) and cheapest replacement toners.

          Ideally I actually wanted to get a decent dedicated scanner and a disposable laser printer but this was beating any combination I could find. Dedicated ADF/Flatbed scanners are stupidly expensive!

        • @Bonsaichop:

          Thanks for that feedback. It is very helpful info.

    • +1 for this unit - also purchased from Officeworks but I think we might have paid more - not a very good Ozbargainer here!

    • I have the same printer. It's great. Direct scanning to internet services like dropbox, FTP, file system, email.

    Just an update to this post and close the thread…finally managed to get a bit of time to go to officeworks and pricematch and reduce the price of the L2740DW from $299 to $241. Happy with the outcome. Printer and scanner both works great. Thanks for all the help again.
