Clive Peeters Allure Blu-Ray Player - $99

800

First Bluray player I've seen under $100. Pretty sure Allure is their in house brand, so it'll be something rebadge.

  • Just bought one from Macgregor store. They have 3 units left.

Haven't got a chance to test it, will test it when i get home tonight.

For $99 and 3 years warranty, who cares? :p

    • +1

As you can imagine, there has been high demand for this. We are just working on getting some extra units into the Macgregor store this afternoon so they should have a few more than 3. But please be aware that this offer is only while stocks last.

      Cheers,
      Spelter

      • Spelter are you able to tell us if it can play blu rays form all regions?

        • I am afraid this isn't a multi-region player. Sorry.

        • +2

          From StewBall's link above (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/hardwarereviews/momitsu_bdp-89…);

'With no disc in the tray I set the region code to Blu-ray B (973522) via the remote. It works with the code 9735DB where D = the desired DVD region code and B = the desired Blu-ray code (1=A, 2=B, 3=C)'

          • @ryang: But how many times can you change the region ? Most these units I have seen have a limit to the region changes.

  • +1

I picked one up this afternoon. Out of the box it's region free for DVD but region locked for Bluray. However the region free codes for the Momitsu 899 work. I checked the Condemned US version and it produced a region mismatch error before the code was entered but played fine after.

    Quoted from above

"With no disc in the tray I set the region code to Blu-ray B (973522) via the remote. It works with the code 9735DB where D = the desired DVD region code and B = the desired Blu-ray code (1=A, 2=B, 3=C)"

  • If i buy this online with paypal and the store for pickup selected doesnt have stock , will it charge me ?

    • +1

We do our best to ensure that this can't happen (for example we move stock around between stores, check availability online when you confirm delivery/pickup location, etc). In the event there is an issue we will of course issue a full refund.

  • Anyone tried the momitsu firmware? Better quality?

    • Hey Spelter, would a firmware update void the warranty on these?

      • Applying a firmware upgrade that wasn't specified for this model (AL-500BD) would void the warranty. Sorry.

  • I'm a bit disappointed with this player. First boot, it made a crackling sound.
Then after setting up the player, inserted a Blue Ray disc, played fine, but the whirling sound is UNBEARABLE!!!

    This thing is NOISY!!!!

Did I get a dud? Is anyone experiencing the same crackling (when turned on), and whirling noise when a BD is being played??

    • Apparently a firmware update will fix this issue, but don't take my word for it

      • where did you get that?

        • Read that when I was searching for info on Sherwood BDP-5004/ Momitsu BDP899. I'll see if I can find the comments.

          • @McMerc: can you please post that when you find it?
the whirling noise is starting to get me! :(

  • +1

Very good buy! Confirmed plays all region Blu-Ray and DVD, just use the code above. Won't find another region-free blu-ray player at this incredible price :D

    • Can you play a video through the usb ?

      • +1

        yes, successfully played .avi

        • +1

          schweet thank you

        • and it supports .srt files :)

        • yeah played divx nicely, compare to my old upscaling dvd player

  • Based on this thread I rushed out and bought one of these..

I can confirm that it plays DVD's region free out-of-the-box and plays local RegionB BLu-Rays, I tried WALL*E and it looked and sounded fantastic…

    HOWEVER…………

It wouldn't recognise my USB powered FAT 320gig FreeAgent Go HD nor my 8 gig Kingston thumb drive…Both got a weird BD-Live update error when plugged in..I don't have a network cable long enough to enable BD-Live. I then disabled BD live and the two drives wouldn't work at all so I can't test if .avis, .mpgs , .mkvs work… :( Both drives work fine on the PS3 I have..BOth drives seemd to be getting OK power, my FreeAgent stayed active, unlike on my old SOny that didn't have enough power draw to identify the HD…

I tried a crappy 2gig Toshiba thumb drive and it recognised that..I will test other formats later..

Hopefully there is a Firmware that will fix this problem AND keep region free for DVD and BluRays..DO the Momitsu firmwares work on this player?

    • Hmm, may be because the usb device is limited to 2 or 4Gb? What is the filesystem of the 8Gb? FAT or NTFS? Can you try with FAT/FAT32 ?

      • I have no problem with my USB thumb drives:
        - 2G Astone (FAT32)
        - 8G Toshiba (NTFS)
        - 2G SanDisk Micro SD -> USB Reader (FAT)

        All detected fine

    • well that's no good, was hoping to use this to replace the Astone AP-32B :(

  • this player upscale dvd via component cable to 720p

  • +1

both are FAT32..Which USB device? On-board? My files are all under 4gig as per FAT32 specs…It's not recognising the devices full stop thats the issue.

HOWEVER, it discovered my Transcend 8gig USB thumb and was able to play mp3's, view jpgs AND play .avis, .mpegs and .mkv's natively out of the box!! Unfortunately it didn't recognise divx files???

Bizarre, it picks up some USB drives and not others, and it plays nearly all the video formats except DivX..

For $99 not bad performance at all, I expect Clive Peeters to give me a free player since I reckon I've just sold about 100 with this heads-up!!!

  • I just bought one of these for no real reason. I've never even watched a bluray as my DVD library is so large. Hope the upscaling DVD is worth it if I don't care for Blu ray.

  • If anyone has yet to discover AVSforum, here's the thread on this model. http://bit.ly/Momitsu899

  • I have tried to put the above mentioned code into the player when there is no disk in it. But nothing happens. And it plays some and does not play other DVDs. Not quite sure how to change the region code. Does not seem to show anything when I punch the numbers in. Please help….!

  • So is the end result a good buy? Region Free BD and DVD. Firmware upgradeable. USB memory support for additional playback formats.

When playing Dolby True or DTS HD audio how good is the downcoversion to Dolby 5.1/dts when using the coaxial or optical digital audio outputs to an older home theatre amplifier that only supports Dolby 5.1/dts as the max using these inputs?

I assume this is available for pickup instore without having to purchase online first. As I see this player advertised in there weekend adcerts in my local paper today. Although its always good to ring before hand to make sure your local store has stock.

    • Region Free DVD: Confirmed personally
Region Free BR: Confirmed by 2 other posters here (I don't have a BR disc yet to test, will soon)
Digital audio outputs: Coaxial only (no optical), and HDMI - works fine for Dolby and DTS 5.1 (I'm using coaxial to my 6 yr old receiver).
I ordered on the web and picked up at the store. CP called me to tell me it was ready to pickup (about 2 hours after I order).

If the BR also works out region free (which it should) then I'm really happy as it replaces my DVD player and future BR player in one and I can buy the usually cheaper Region A discs from the US and still have the ability to play the BR in this region (Region B).

      • read on other forums. There is analogue 5.1 outputs as well. Unlike the Mitsumo. Can anybody confirm this? Coaxial audio is fine. but 5.1 analogue would be better for uncompressed audio directly to my older amplifier.

  • Yeah the other drawback is that the audio is only co-ax and analogue 5.1 :(…But then the Sony 728P that this replace had the same shit-out connections…

The native downgrade to DTS/DD 5.1 sounds fine and online reports say the DTS-HD etc sounds even better..

    • From all reports I have read that you get uncompressed / lossless audio via the 5.1 analogue outputs if your amplifier supports it. Still nothing wrong with coaxial digital, although lossless. My old Marantz SR7500 has both analogue 7.1 & coaxial inputs. So will try both if I get a player and see which sounds better.

Just to confirm, Allure is our own brand appliances and accessories. See http://www.clivepeeters.com.au/brands/allure.aspx?brand=allu… for a list.

    • Could you please provide an update to improve it (possible remove the crankling sound?mentioned by earlier post? yet maintain the region function? :P)

      • Is this a problem for everyone? Only rockuman has reported this so far.

        • only when i turn on the player. My old philips dvd player got such sound as well…… just not as loud.

    • Hi Spelter,

The blu-ray player doesn't work properly with blu-ray discs. I am using HDMI cable to connect the player to a full-hd Sharp lcd. I did not do any set-ups on both the player and the lcd. When the lcd is turned on, the lcd, at best, shows the Blu-Ray logo ad the brand name of the player for a few seconds, and then the picture disappears. I had to turn off the BR player. Then i could see a message saying something like uncompatible signal is received… please check output…could you advise what could be done to eliminate this problem?

      Thanks…

      • Hi Clin333999

I had a similar problem with the picture also cutting in and out I changed something in the display settings and it fixed the problem. In the display settings the last option there is something that says 36Bits change it to something lower I changed it to 30Bits and now works fine fixed the problem I have a LG LCD, if you cant do this thru HDMI plug in the RED WHITE and YELLOW lead to do it then try HDMI again.

        • Hi Lazer,

Thanks for your comments. I have tried it. i set it to 30 bits but it still didn't work. the picture is still cutting in and out. it is very disappointing! the tv is still showing a message uncompatible signal is received now i have to use the YELLOW lead to make sure i get the NOT HD picture.

Did you do any other settings in the player or the tv? if yes, can you give me the details?

          Your help is much appreciated!

        • hhhhmmm no didt do anything else just done that and it worked did you try lowering it further like below 30bits?

  • Man that is a sweet deal. For me it is even sweeter. I don't want I BR player but I know someone who will trade it for a xbox 360 ! (jtag-able as well !)

  • How can you check stock in store? after you order online? Can you upscale from from usb?

  • Forget the bloody broken website. I ordered online (using rickhart.com.au) and after clicking the final 'submit' got a page saying there was nothing in my cart.

And now it turns out I can just walk in to my local shop and pay the same $99. Its not really a web special.
If this thing does multi-region and mpeg, avi, and mkv off the USB, I'm in heaven.

Has anyone tried high-def (e.g.720p) AVI for MKV files? (mpeg4 and h264)
How is the user interface? has to be better than my old DVD player which only shows 8.3 filenames of avi files.

    • +1

Your issue with the website sounds strange. If you could send us more information (http://www.rickhart.com.au/help-and-support/report-a-bug.asp…) we would like to look into this for you.

      Cheers,
      Spelter

      • You can get your techs to check the server logs. I used an email address rickhart@…
But no authorisation has appear on my credit card, and I bought one at the shop, so I'm happy.

  • +1

Just picked one up from Burleigh Waters. They have about 30-40 left

    • Just placed a online order for this store, how long until they email you with the OK for pickup?

      • +1

It was about an hour for the second e-mail (The Store Has Received the order). Got a phonecall an hour after that.

  • Got mine yesterday. Bigger than what I expected. About the same size of the first generation dvd players. When first turned on it gives a loud noise. Tried 2 new blu-ray discs. First try it couldn't read, then after 1 minute ejected the disc and put it back in. Then it plays. I may have got a lemon..

  • +2

Excellent! Plays all the videos I tried: incl. high-def AVIs (mpeg4), HD mp4 from youtube, mkv, and mpeg PS (from digital TV recordings). All 720p - I have not tried 1080. USB works, but not my hard drive. Maybe it does not like partitioning?

One problem : 4:3 recordings are stretched to fullscreen, and I cannot find a way to override that. Also, with hmdi or component, I cannot change the aspect on my TV either., so the only way to view 4:3 AVI/mpeg etc is via composite video :-(. Any solution?

Another big problem: while it plays hi-def .mkv, the fast-forward is only 2X, and GOTO does not seem to work.
Nor does it remember the position after stop and restart. So how do you get back to the middle of a movie without 30 minutes of not-so-fast-forward?

Anyway, ozbargain is not a tech forum. I'll google for the right one.

    • I think if you go into Settings —> Video and reset your TV to 4:3 then it just plays it normal and puts black bars on the side, I saw it somewhere in the table in the manual as well what it will do with various types of videos.

      • Fixed, thanks.
My TV cannot change aspect for hi-def input.
But I played with the player settings again, and found "16:9 pillarbox" works for everything.
Now wide videos play as before but 4:3 videos are pillarboxed. Why is this not the default?

Still no solution for seeking in MPG or MKV files, but I note GOTO works with AVI files.
Would be nice to have buttons that jump +/- 1min/5min/etc like on a PC.

And such a shame the ethernet port does not do anything useful like streaming from UPnP or youtube.

        • Would be nice if firmware was further developed to stream from UPnP or youtube. Wishful thinking I suppose…….

  • Kazaa ftw.

    • ?

  • Unit is louder than expected - you can hear the spinning disc, also loud noise when starting up. Anyone else got this problem?

    I'm gonna return mine.

    • Nope, mine is perfect, it plays all my files, avi, mkv, mp4….good stuff

    • yeah mine makes a bit of a racket and whirr but you don't notice once the film plays. It's a cheap player, what do you expect?

Image and sound quality is quite superb. This baby is kicking the competitors out of the park.

  • Also read that the front usb port is next to useless as the front bezel gets in the way and won't allow most usb devices to be fully inserted. Yet the rear usb port is fine.

Also anybody know what for file names the maxumim number of chacters dispiayed when accessing media is? Is it still the old 8.3 (11 characters) for does it show longer file names?

    • Not true. The USB socket is fine. Perhaps you read about a different model? (not allure?)

It shows proper VFAT filenames. Also works with NTFS, or so I read.
The UI is very pretty, but a little awkward to use. Too many button presses just to play a file or disk.

I love this machine, and I don't even have any bluray discs :-)
Must borrow one to try it.

  • So plugging in my 1TB WD HDD won't work? That's too bad. Still a great deal though. Now I just need a BR disc to try it out.

    • Yes it will work, just read my comment further down the page. You have to use a program, that will format your hard drive to FAT32.

There is no major difference to your normal hard drive format (NTFS), and if you want to change it back (for whatever reason), you can always format it back to NTFS via windows format.

  • Still about a dozen on the floor in Bendigo. No need to order online just walk in and walk out with one. Can't wait to try it out now

    • Cool oldshepp, hope there are still some there tomorrow if I get a chance to get to the Bendigo store. Would like more reports on ther performance of this unit.

  • Yep, no need purchase from website. Plenty stock on floor at Auburn store - approximate 20-30 when I was there this morning. Actually, if you order by web, it going to take you longer at service counter as they have to get your driver license, signature etc.
Just walk-in, grab one, pay, out in 1 minute.

It plays MKV but on a FAT32 usb stick only. It didn't recognise my 8Gb stick (NTFS) but ok with 2GB one (FAT32).

  • Walked in and picked mine up at Loganholme earlier. There was about 6-7 left. Plays MKV on my 8GB(FAT32) too! Wont rewind though which is annoying and will only fast forward x2

  • Bought one from Auburn Clive Peeters aswell.

Man, this is more than what I expected, I was only expecting a Blu-ray player with avi playback, but it plays mkv, I've got no issue with FF or RW, it goes further than 2x.

What a bargain, this makes my Astone 110-D redundant, doh, only bought it a couple of months ago!

    • Ive only got the issue when im playing an mkv thru the usb. Everything else is fine.

    • yeah but 110-D accepts 2.5" and 2.5" drives, this thing only works for FAT32 USB sticks

  • FYI Anyone in WA can pick one up instore at Rick Hart.
I'm not sure when the offer ends so I'm ordering online and picking it up during the week from the Joondalup store.

  • I got one today from City West Store Rick Hart. DVD+R discs with .avi movies on them aren't recognised. 1TB hard-drive HDD not recognised, but no suprise there. 2GB toshiba thumb stick not recognised either. A little dissapointed :( Any suggestions?

    • —All of the following assumes that this player reads only FAT32 and not NTFS—

Firstly, you could format your USB drive as FAT32, then put ur movies onto it and it will play (formatting clears everything, so back it up first). If its already FAT32, then you have a problem with the usb drive and player (compatibility issue???).

But for your 1TB hard drive (which WILL be NTFS) you CANNOT format it normally to FAT32, as there is a limitation of 32GB HD size (as set by windows). So use program 'FAT32 Format' available from here: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

This will format into FAT32, HDs of any size. I do this for my 1TB external hard drives i plug up to my PS3, works awesome.

Note: Just make sure the movies on the 1TB arent your only copy, as FAT32 format of a 1TB hard drive is a bit unstable and corruption can occur if you edit, copy or delete files a lot on it. Used mine regularly (daily) for 6 months without a problem.

      • Note also that FAT32 has a file size limitation of 4GB.

So if you have a 1080p blu-ray rip of a movie, it will almost certainly be greater than 4gb in size. Therefore you won't be able to copy it to your FAT32 drive. The only solution is to split the file.

Btw I'm pretty sure my Windows 7 machine formatted my 500gb external drive to FAT32 with no problems.

        • you're right. the 32gb limitation is only for windows xp.

      • Many thanks for that link venu. Ive just formated my 500GB HDD to FAT32 and works like a dream thru my USB. Much appreciated!!

  • Found a flaw: DivX-5 does not work. These are AVIs with a DX50 fourcc.
None of my aXXo.avi files will play.

Some files are limited to 2X playback and no goto. All VOBs tested were affected, but only some avi and mkv files. Anyone know why?

And the fat32 partition on a 1TB drive works.

    • yeah man same observatoins here. Some AVIs don't work. VOBs and some mkvs only forward at 2x.

Needs new firmware, hopefully someone is developing it.

      And no zoom button either.

  • Only 10 left at the Belrose store when I was in there this afternoon.

  • +1

Just to keep everyone informed, we are working on a firmware update although at this stage I haven't got any information on what functionality that will or won't include. I will update this thread when I get the information.

    Cheers,
    Spelter

    • +1

Wow!!! Your support on this forum is simply amazing. Even though I have no Clive Peeters stores close to me, I can really see myself buying from Clive Peeters.

A firmware update would be absolutely kick ass.

      • +1

I am trying my hardest not to buy this player as i have way too many toys and no blu ray discs , but with the features etc it amost a no brainer.

      • Thanks, it's nice to know the input is valued. Given there is no Clive Peeters near you I guess you will have to stick to buying online with us :)

No promises on functionality the firmware update will deliver.

        Cheers,
        Spelter

        • Spelter, is it possible to download a copy of the existing firmware please?
Could be useful in case something goes wrong in future and a re-install is needed.

Is it possible for BD-live to cripple features by "updating"?
Actually there does not seem to be much benefit in BD-live. I think I will leave it disconnected.

    • Any update on when this is available and also is it possible to get the current firmware from somewhere?

  • That's great…I think a firmware update will fix all the loose bells and whistles for this player.

Just a question…would implementing the new firmware, whenever it comes out…disable the multi-region functionality?

    • +1

Just dont get your hopes up too high, firmware updates can fix problems and cause problems, although they are designed to fix problems found after release.

If you not happy with the player at the current level then i would be hesitant to buy it, on a promised fix.

  • ..are they still $99?

  • Just ordered one online will pick it up next week from Clive :)

EDIT Got it already they rang me and I picked it up they have heaps of stock they told me :)

  • I tried plugging in my seagate 320gb pocket drive and the Allure player didn't recognize it…it did recognize my 4gb usb drive though….does anyone know what i can do to get it working with my pocket hard drive? is it because my pocket hard drive doesnt run off an external power source? it's formatted ntfs…

    • have u tried formatting it as FAT32, as mentioned earlier on this page?

  • Just to let you know, we are now sold out in:
    * Vic
    * SA
    * NSW
    * ACT

    Cheers,
    Spelter
