damm it just bought a few hundred's worth at the old 5% ….

  • nice… Missed out in the past.

Can someone clarify this for me please?

Some people said that it can be used in other Woolworths Group businesses such as Dan Murphys, Caltex, Woolworths, etc. even though the T&C says that is is strictly for BIG W.

    Is this true?

    Thank you for your help

    • +28

The cards themselves can only be used at Big W and Big W online

Now some people will try to say you can buy Wish cards etc with these cards @ Big W, this is wrong!. Big W clamped down on this after Christmas, and while some people have gotten lucky and achieved it, don't count on it happening for you!

(Had to make sure the point was made and early in the comments. Your question comes up in every one of these posts. So don't take the bold stuff personally, just making sure people see :))

        Thank you!

From a promotion a couple of months ago, I am sure that if I buy a physical BIG W gift card, I can use it in other WW businesses as well.

In this case, I will buy a smaller nomination of the BIG W eGift Card.

Thanks Backspace… I mean Spackbace (man, it is tricky to type your username) :D

        No problem with bold letters!

        • Physical gift card yes, e-gift card no. That's why last month's promotion (10% off physical gift cards) was so appealing.

        • @feihong:

What he says is exactly correct. Have tested both thoroughly.

  • cannot be used to purchase any other Gift Cards issued by Woolworths Limited.

    What about other gift cards?

    • any gift card that has a fixed face value (which applies to just about all non-woolworths group gift cards) can be purchased at self checkout, and you choose your own payment method.

      • It's fine to buy Blackhawk cards (all those other gift cards) through a normal checkout, too.

        • From experience, some staff members may not allow it now (as a result of over-reaction to the recent giftcardception events), whereas self-checkout has a higher success rate.

      • last time I tried to purchase a giftcard at a Big W self checkout was such a hassle, after I scanned the giftcard, the machine started saying "please place item in the bagging area", I tried everything to get the scales to sense the giftcard but the machine just wouldn't detect it, then it asked for assistance and the attendant came over and insisted I went to the normal checkout, so then after waiting minutes in the queue the checkout lady took forever figuring out how to scan a giftcard, then gave up and took minutes just to type up the giftcard number manually.

Woolworths self checkouts are so much better as they don't weigh the items.

        • Depends on the location. My local Woolies definitely weighs items.

  • Any good TV deals coming up at Big W? ;)

    • Yes, the latest model from the "Platinum" brand is coming out soon. Great value for money.

      • Any chance you can elaborate please? Are these new models different to the one's Target currently have?

        • +3

Sorry, I was being facetious. Big W don't carry any good TVs and I would never recommend a POS brand like Platinum.

        • +4

@jelko: As was I. I was just showing the purpose of posting a useless comment.

        • @Jonesy7707: Honestly had no idea they didn't carry any decent brands, ah well.

        • @notout50: My reply was to Jelko, not you.

  • +6

Hopefully the gift cards don't take as long to arrive as their cashback…

    • +3

      what cashback?

  • Can we use this to buy Optus recharge vouchers?
And if so, I assume we can just use portions of it until it expires? ie: a $100 egift card = 3 x $30 recharges over a 3 mth period?

    • Yep.

  • for people want to buy the iphone se, it's time. i have seen them available in store at Rockdale BigW.

    • Oh really?! How much? I thought they were stock standard pricing!

      • Edit. Thought you meant it was on sale. My bad

  • Wow tightarse, the biggest contributor here works for cashrewards.

You didn't know? Its being some months now.

    • didnt know either ..

  • Wow, I was just denied purchasing JB Hifi gift cards with my physical Big W card.
Anyone know if they're cracking down on gift cards in general?

    • just use self-checkout

      • I did…
The eagle eyed attendant saw it.
Maybe go on Saturday when its busy.

        • What difference would that make? You'd still be denied right? Cause its the self checkout thats doing it.

    • +7

Yes, depends on how diligent staff are. Their systems will allow it, but staff have been trained to spot people buying gift cards and stop them.

Tried this earlier in the week and ended up having an argument with a store manager. Result: he let me buy $200 worth of JB Hifi gift cards.

So it's just a matter of luck, and trying not to be so obvious about it that gets you noticed by staff. That means:

      • Self check out
      • Small quantities
      • Scan the long code and not the short one (will throw an error requiring attendant)
      • Putting it in the bagging area is a luck thing, since as far as I can tell there's no reliable way of avoiding it since it weighs less than the system can detect reliably.
      • 5 card max (I think)
      • Buy along with something else
      • Don't mention payment method if you need assistance with any of the above

Will add more as I think of them.

N.B. If you have Wish gift cards, screw Big W. Just go to Woolies. You can process up to 5 at a time before you hit a system-triggered "quantity restriction" and nobody will give a shit.

      • Ok, thanks for the advice!

Try putting your wallet/phone there to make it trigger that you've placed the "item" in the bagging area.

With Flight Centre gift cards it was 3. It may well vary for other types of gift cards.

Usually $500 limit per transaction, split it if you need more.

      • Do you need to also swipe the gift cards themselves through the POS scanner (not the self-checkout scanner) to "activate" them?

That's what the operators seem to do?

        • Only a guess, but I think swiping is only necessary for cards that don't already have the value fixed in the card itself… E.g. Wish gift cards and visa/mc prepaid. And maybe iTunes?

JB cards don't even have a mag stripe.

        • they only swipe them after you have made payment, usually an error comes up after you have paid for the attendant to swipe the card

  • any idea how long they take to arrive in ones inbox?

    edit NVM

"Please allow up to 12 hours for delivery of eGift Cards"

    • u must have enter wrong email

  • Been 12+ hours still no email… :(

    FWP

TA, any chance of a deal on a Woolworths Wish eGift Card? 7.5% on those would be great.

    • +1

You've got 5% off everyday at CashRewards

      • That's a good back up but not a deal per se.

  • Purchased 2 x $500 last night and BigW suddenly made all iPad Pro unavailable this morning!!

    WTH.
