Lenovo S10E (4333A41) Black Netbook, $286 (Plus Shipping $19), @ MLN (Melbourne)

300

I think it's a good value.
Becomes $305 after shipping. I'm not sure how much they charge to upgrade the memory to 2GB though.

Cons:
This model does not come with an express card slot (unlike some of its sister models)
and you will have to buy seperate lenovo WWAN card if you want built-in 3G connectivity (costs couple of hundred dollars, other branded may not work as it's supposed to be whitelisted at bios)
Their spec says 3 usb ports, but I'm pretty sure it only comes with 2 USB ports.
And yeah, the resolution is a bit sucky.
Speaker sound is bit tiny.
Right shift key is very small, so if you type in language that uses a lot of right-shift you might have to change your typing style.

Pros:
Multi touch pad is good when zooming in and out, is there any other use for that though?
Wireless N and bluetooth are nice to have
6 Cell battery is good enough for a day's work. (for me at least)

Otherwise good all-rounder I'd say.

Good price, the main caveat is the 576 vertical res.

    Great for a Hackintosh!

  • Damn, would have been a great buy if the "FN" key wasn't on the lower left corner of the keyboard. The CTRL should always be on that corner.

    • You get used to it.

      • You get used to it.

Yeah, but after the 20th time you highlight a block of text and press 'C', as in 'fn+C' instead of 'ctrl+C', this statement of yours starts to wear a bit thin.

Also, you never get used to it if you use more than one computer.

    • Just remap that key.

  • It would have been worthwhile if it comes with WINDOWS 7…

    still, a solid deal.

  • Should I go for Acer eM250 $198 or this S10e ? Comments welcome !

    • Is the harvery norman deal still available? I thought it was expired?!

    • where is the offer of acer?

  • Its expired!…. Bargainer prob has the Acer on rain-check

  • yes, on rain-check. But i still have option to go Acer AO751 ($299) or Lenovo S10E ($286)

Both will be lemons in 3 months… Seems to me the manufacturers are dumping their Atom N270's

Maybe cheap N450's with 10 hour battery life, 1366 x 768 displays, 3G and HDMI must be just around the corner?

    • I don't think HDMI output on netbooks will be too useful at least in terms of entertainment. They don't usually have that much processing capability to handle high definition content.

      • not n450 but z530 does! i wish they came with hdmi.

      • Just reading through this, and personally think HDMI output is a VERY useful. I purchased the Asus N10JC netbook nearly a year ago, and loving it. Originally had Vista so wanted to throw it away. But after upgrading to win7, my work friends were also impressed with the HDMI function on this netbook.

Yes, agreed it was top price I paid, but I was able to bring it to my holiday travel and plug it into pretty much any flat panel TV. Easy to pack/carry and watch it on planes, etc. Acts as the perfect "media player". Managed to even play a full blue ray ISO with great results as well. Tested it on 55" tv and really cannot complain.

Even my friends are looking into it now.

Just my 2 cents worth :).

    • I do question calling them "lemons" in 3 months. Will the netbooks break down or stop working within 90 days?

It's obvious that a new generation of netbooks is coming soon. It happens every year, or two years at the absolute maximum.

If the current generation of netbooks do everything the buyer asks of them, then they won't be lemons. The new generation netbooks obviously won't cost $300 either.

      • after owning both the s10 & s10e i would agree with the lemons in 3 months statement, apologies to the owners of this lemon.

usually within 3 months you will notice the lack of design element ie the way it doesnt cool down when you are doing anything decent. sure you might be lucky.

The good thing is they do have a warranty, which means when you reach above 3 service calls you will get a refund (obviously you need to provide enough evidence of inconvenience (3 service calls)

I know it sounds like i hate these notebooks , i am a happy onwer of the s10-2 which is a revamped design of the s10 & s10e, they are cheap and this one is nasty which is why they are clearing.

    • Regardless, notebooks do have warranties and I believe the S10e is guaranteed to last at least a year.

  • Hi guys,

Do any of you know where I can buy a red one of these like the ones that they gave to NSW year 9 students last year? I think the model was Lenovo S10E (4333A16). I really badly want to get one of these, no matter how much it costs. Any help is appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Tony

    • Hi tony, there are quite a lot of RED versions of this netbook on ebay for~ $350.
      Goodluck!

Make an offer to one of the school kids

    • It's not the same model but OrangeIT sells S10e 4333-A43 Red for $319
      http://www.orangeit.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=67…

      • Please note the version at MLN has wireless N, which provides faster internet and network connectivity and the new Gen 2 battery that has been improved on the older version which had a few faults.
The new battery is more reliable and has a longer battery life.
The S10e available at MLN is exclusive to MLN and is the latest improved version of the S10e.

  • PS Just bought one to attempt a hackintosh on.
So excited, cheap fake mac, yeah!

    • Let us know how it goes :)

was thinking of doing that ! unfortunately theres no support for the wifi , unless you change wifi cards ( another 25 bucks)

      • Not true, Wifi works fine with this model, it is 3g that doesn't function.
But as far as I can tell, wifi is fully functional.

        • what kext do you use?? Ive been trying to find a kext for intel 5100 for ages.

  • The Wifi card works fine, its an a/b/g/n
You do not need to add or buy anything extra to connect to a network or a wireless router.
We have never claimed it has built in 3G, nor does it come with 3g. Could someone tell me why everyone think this may come with 3g?

    • The early versions of the S10e from Lenovo came with a 3G option, but this would be in place of the Wireless Card.
