Optus SIM Only: 12 Month Plan $50pm - 9GB + 2 GB Bonus. Total 11GB (Online Only)

530

Hi all,

Seems that Optus have released a new 12 month SIM only offer.

Unlike the previous $50 for 10gig, this new online only offer is $50 for 9 + 2 gig.

This new plan also includes 500 minutes of "selected" minutes to international. This is up from the previous 300 minutes.

Its for new or re-contracting customers.

Includes the usual unlimited talk / TXT / MMS.

I think a pretty good deal.

Hope this comes in handy for some……

  • This or the $40?

    • Hi uneek.

Yep, there is also a $40pm, that includes 6gig, plus 1 gig bonus. Total of 7 gig on a 12 month plan.

Also looks like they have increased their $30 SIM only, month to month to $35.00.

      Thanks,

used to be $30 for 1gb
now it's $35 for 1.5. But imo, if you want to spend $35 for 1.5gb you might as well go with a $40 contract for 7gb (or 10 from last month)

        • Try the $28 / mon Jeenee deal: 2.5 GB + unlimited (Talk + SMS/MMSs ), after $10 setup.

You might wait a week or so, as a Deal is expected…

Around Xmas, we got all that for $25 / mon, sans setup fee.

Maybe get a Dual SIM phone, & equip OTs 2nd SIM socket w/ MyPrePaid Daily Pluss
$2 for 0.5 GB, for Internet intensive days.

PS JeeNee is a SOCIAL ENTERPRISES, & may be worth supporting for that reason.

        • If you're happy with 1.5gigs of data and $700 worth calling plus $200 international calls plus $30 to spend on Google play store you're better off with Telstra $30 starter pack that goes on sale for $10 to $15 from time to time and buy optus/voda/amay starter pack on sale and switch between them every month and its defenetly worth the hassle and savings of $20 to $25 compared to $35 sim only plans.

        • @IVI: @newozbargainermelb: my entire family is with optus and we get great deals while having a large pool of data, not really worth getting anything else

      7gb vs 11gb
      300min vs 500min international calls
      $40 vs $50

      You choose.

      • 7gb is more practical.

        • Depends if you want to tether or not

Now, all we need is data-only pricing like this for Tablets…!

        Any Suggestions?

Costly+Wasteful FUEL RODS vs LIQUID FUEL

        • You can use this sim card on a tablet without issue or just tether your tablet to your phone and share the data.

        • @Agret: I've met Optus folks who say that can cancel a phone-SIM's acc't if it's used in a tablet. They stand to lose $$ vs Data-only SIMs.
Whose side would TIO favor, if they were to cut your acc't? Dunno.

        • @IVI: they have no way of knowing if it's in a phone or tablet. If you had it in a phone but never made/receive calls just used SMS and mobile data then there's no difference.

        • @Agret: I'm sure they can distinguish Tab from Phone.

Whether they cancel accounts using Phone SIMs only in a Tab, just for the data,
          I don't know.

We need some folks who use SIMs this way to test the waters, & raise a TIO complaint if they lose their accounts.

I'm on Telstra $40 for 7GB so I'd personally go for the $40 to save $10 since 7GB is plenty for me. If you're a heavy user, you might as well go with the $50 since excess data is charged at $10 per GB.

      • Is this Telstra 7GB for $40 deal still available? Cannot find it on the web.

        • +1

Yeha I couldn't either. I even chatted to Telstra and asked if they could od the deal that they had just last week. unfortunately the best they could do was 5GB and $1000 calls for $40 so ended up renewing a 12 month plan with Voda for $40 a month including 7GB and unlimited calls and texts and 90 mins international.

I'm permanently stuck with Voda :(

        • +1

Sorry mate, I don't think it's available. It was available on/off late last year and early this year, but I think they'll possibly restart it.

        • Nope, I am paying $40 prepaid Telstra - 3GB Day data + 3GB Night data, end result is me using all my day data which sucks.

Think i'm going to switch to this Optus deal - too good

  • Went with the recently ended $40 for 10gb with 300 international mins. Agreed that if you are an data guzzler and do in fact call overseas often (on the selected countries), then an additional $10 for 1 gb plus 200 international mins might work.

Do note that Optus' additional data is priced at $10/gb so you are getting the extra 200 mins of international call time.

    Pretty aggressive promotions nowadays …

    • Virgin deals look ok too.

      • Virgin does roll over data. Optus didn't when I left the 8gb $40 month

  • +11

Additional 10% off for UNiDAYS members.

  • +3

Not really a deal when the $36 10gb plan was just around. Sure, it's no longer available but we had weeks to sign up for it.
Plus there's been word of a cheaper plan than the now expired $36 plan.

  • +1

I just missed out on the $60 for $40 offer before and the 7GB is not as good as the 10GB

    • I did call them on 1st April after the $60 for $40 plan expired on 31st Mar and they still offered me that $60 plan for $40 as it was still under offer until 3rd April they said. 10gb and 300 international mins.
      Try calling them.

Competing with Vodafone. Vodafone has unlimited minutes to certain overseas countries. Also has unlimited data for first 2 months. Same price.

the support is trash, their bills accounting system is flawed and the network is horrid.

      • Maybe, but I haven't had any network issues.

        • I don't know if it was just me, but I was with them around a year ago. We had a Pocket WiFi modem, and as a heavy user I murdered our data caps consistently, only impacted by the constant drops and 3G speeds. We once recieved a bill of $240, and we only pay $50/m. Turns out their system accounted for 19GB of overages our router supposedly didn't account for or track. We were given an option of paying only $60 and we did it, luckily.. We called support on many occasions and were promised a 4G router and a higher data cap, both of which were never provided nor dispatched by Vodafone. Yet every time we went to cancel our 12 month plan my parents were suckered into renewing with a new plan.

        • +1

@Droidyy: yeah I joined up with them over from Optus about a year ago, pretty much when everyone jumped ship. Since then they have improved the network and less people so I'm loving it.

      • Last time I checked my data was flowing when telstras wasnt…..

        For me optus is perfect.

        • +1

          I was talking about Voda

Optus sucks on support but it's cheaper than Telstra and works I guess

        • @Droidyy: Yeap - Optus support is horrendous. Good value for money though.

        • @Droidyy: yeh I assumed it was telstra… lol I cant believe imissed voda.

      • +1

I've found the opposite. Just finished a 24 month contract with Vodafone. Their support has been fantastic when I've needed it, and never once had an issue with the network. It keeps getting better.

        • Same, Aussie support on Vodafone is great.

Scored a deal, paying $55 a month on a 24 month sim only contract
20GB of data, unlimited everything else with 120 mins international.

Also the $5 roaming is excellent.

        • @apptrack:

          How did you get that?!

        • @lammi:

          Loyalty bonus+ABN

        • @apptrack:

Awesome! I got an ABN too, do you know how much it is without the loyalty?

        • @lammi:

Well it was $60, but they don't do that deal any more :(

  • can I combine two sims (one for tablet and one for the phone) ?

    • +2

I did it on their data share sim, paid $5 once off and shared the data from the mobile service on my ipad. Both sim cards need to be on the same bill though.

I read previously some fellow OZBers reported the data share sim is no longer available, so suggest you do your due diligence.

    • Yes I had this - it costs an extra $5 / mth minimum with some extra MB as well.

    • I paid a one off $5 for a data share sim to share my 20 gb $100 plan between my ipad and my iphone. Means I've got 4G tethering whenever I'm out, plus internet access down the coast.

There's an iphone 6S 64 gb included in the plan, hence the cost!

  • +3

Makes the deal at the start of the year even better. Got the 10gb and unlimited calls & 300min inter for $30 on a 12 month plan.

  • +1

I'm gonna stay on prepaid untill they bring unlimited international calls to 10 selected countries to postpaid plans.

Edit: currently on their $40 prepaid plan which gives me —

    Unlimited Local/national calls
Unlimited international calls to 10 countries
    8GB Data

    plus ROLLOVER DATA every month

    and no lock in contract

    • I'm interested in this plan too!

But do you know if by the next recharge (after 1st May), the bonus data will be no more and will revert back to 3gb for $40? then that deal don't sound as good anymore!

      LaMMi

      • There is a lot of competition these days, I think they'll extend it or may be make it even more better. Even by looking at the history of their prepaid/pastpaid plans, the current plans are better in terms of inclusions than in the past.

Vodafone also have same 1st May expiry date for its plans/ offers on both prepaid and postpaid. So to me, this date is just beacuse of competition, like how they always introduce new plans to match with other telcos.

        • May be they want to acquire more customers by end of June for this financial year

    • Yep, but its only 28 days….so in fact you are paying around $44/month

The unlimited international calls to select 10 countries appears to end 1 May…..

      • +2

        $50 × 12 = $600 on postpaid
        $40 × 13 = $520 on prepaid

        Annual savings = $80

        • -1

          plus interest

    • check out amaysim with unlimited inernational calls…you might like it

  • +1

Sigh, yet another one of those.
They should offer one FIFTH of the data (you heard me) for only 1/3 of the price. THAT would be a deal I could get behind.

    • +7

You, my friend, need to jump on the prepaid starter kit bandwagon.

      • I don't like messing around tho - I'm on TPG $20 month, 1.5gb, 4g, seems ok. and first 6 months only $10 a month
Well except they lied about charging me a $10 SIM at startup…. but besides that.

        • Ahhh, messing around and expensive phone plans are inversely proportional. The less messing around you're prepared to do, chances are the more you'll have to pay.

        • @KaptnKaos: I guess, but $20 per month ain't shabby for 1.5GB - would 2GB or 3GB be better and the Telstra network? Sure but it's starting to get reasonable.

  • i guess amaysim still batter deal on the market for international callers. its unlimited with amaysim.

i would never use more than 4gb a month as i have wifi at home and work. $30 with amaysim get 3gb and unlimited everything. optus is ripoff never go postpaid with optus

  • After my last two customer care experiences with Optus, I'm afraid to do more with them! Having said that, I signed up for the plan that expired end of last month, effectively $30/mth with 10GB, unlimited calls/text and 300 international minutes to selected countries. Previously, I was on the month-to-month plan, effectively paying $40/mth with 7GB and the same unlimited calls/text and 300 international minutes.

I think the mobile phone (network) wars have started, they are becoming extra competitive… so the value is really coming through, but I think they need to really focus on their customer service. I read yesterday that Optus is cut hundreds of jobs, to streamline their operations even more. I need customer service that can do everything… my experience late last week - was signing up for the $40/mth plan (down to $30 with broadband) ended up me getting an email saying that my iphone 6s 64gb was getting delivered to some address (my name, but not my address)… it took me an hour on the phone speaking to 4 different people to make sure I was signed up for the right thing and the phone order was cancelled. I would like:

    a. not being on hold for 30 minutes before I can speak to someone
    b. when I speak to someone, they can solve everything for me - and not pass me on from sales support to orders to sales (we can only give 7GB not 10GB because 10GB only applies to online sales) to online sales.

    TL;DR:
Optus - get your act together. Loving your new promotions and phone plans, but you need to be able to solve problems at the first point of contact, not make a customer revisit the same issue over and over.

  • Can I exploit this for data sharing. I have three kids I'd rather not pay monthly fees for. Can I share data with them if their sim is on optus but has no credit (ie. I can still call them, but they can't call out).

  • How is their bill looking like? Does it come with itemized billing? Would definitely consider jumping in it as the prepaid normally doesn't include much details especially out going log call (yes I know phones like iPhone does log but not more than 2 weeks)

    • +1

their bill is extensive for calls - it has itemised billing.

  • Ahahaha I got 10GB for $40 mth at Christmas lol

  • +1

I signed up for the $24 for 10gb optus deal after all the discounts. For some reason I have 20gb of data… Not going to complain either.

    • +1

it looks like I've got 18GB shareable data too…!!?

      • Did u sign up from the other deal as well? Says I've used 7gb of my 20gb…. Maybe it's rolling over lol. Good glitch.

        • I changed from the month-to-month, 8GB plan, to the 12-month 10GB plan for $10 less. I find it weird because it actually says "shareable" data in the dashboard. I would probably not risk using more than 10GB for now, just in case they say I'm over my limit and charge me $10/gb.

  • Off topic, but may give u a look at vendors:

For NBN, Optus was more costly (at low 12.5 Mob/Sec speed) than DoDo,
    DoDo didn't offer a 50Mb/Sec speed btwn 25 & 100 Mb/Sec
Only after install'g 25Mb/Sec NBN did a vendor offering 50Mb/Sec slip brochures thru our mail slot to tell us they did.

And the monster-moderation Whirlpool site just can't keep up - or so it seems - as they no longer bother to offer BroadbandConnect aid to choosing a service (was at BC.Whirlpool.net.au )

  • Back to Mobile Data, isn't it time - YET - for AU's vendors to offer UNLIMITED Mobile Data?!?
