Osprey Farpoint 55L or 70L Carry on Lightweight Travelpack - $150 Delivered @ Sydney Luggage Centre

90

I think this is a good price for either the 50L or 70L. Newer 2016 models just came out so older 2015 stock is being cleared out. Newer models sell for $200-$250 although I am not sure exactly what the difference is, I think just some extra padding and different straps.

Most other stores I've visited have already cleared out the older models e.g.
(http://www.paddypallin.com.au/osprey-farpoint-55-travel-pack…) sold the 55L model for $160.96.

The Osprey Farpoint gets awesome reviews for travelling, and both the 50L and 70L can be used as carry-on. Also comes with detachable daypack.

Lifetime warranty for Osprey bags too :)

**Note;
- The 55L model is a 40L main pack + 15L detachable daypack.
- The 70L model is 55L + 15L detachable daypack.

  • Hi OP, do you think it will fit for cabin size and weight ? ty

The 70L won't as it's about 10cm too tall. You might be able to squash it down enough though. The 55L is slightly too large but should be OK.

To be honest there's not a lot of point getting the 70L IMO, since at nearly 2kg that only gives you 5kg of stuff, which you can most likely fit into the smaller bag.

If you're looking for a bag for purely carry-on, the Porter is a better bet. It's lighter (under 1kg), right on dimension, and cheaper (about $120 on eBay).

      • for the Porter backpack, what size should I have, I mean how many litres, thanks.

Both the 30 and the 46 are legal carry-on (I think the 46 might actually be 1-2cm over for some airlines, but you can squish it).

I got the 30L because it's lighter, cheaper (I paid $85 delivered from bundyoutdoors.com) and a more convenient size. To me it is big enough for a couple of weeks away so there was no point going bigger. Also, I figured that filling up the 30L would probably weigh close to 7kg anyway so the extra size of the 46L is irrelevant.

I am going to use it solely as a carry-on bag though, so YMMV. Bear in mind this has no wheels which is why it's so light. I decided I can carry 5kg through an airport pretty easily.

If you live near somewhere that has these on display you can get a feel for the sizes in person, which will be very helpful in working out which will suit your needs best.

I have smuggled the Kathmandu Wayfarer on numerous international flights and even an Australian domestic flight despite the fact that it is a little over official carry on guidelines (http://www.kathmandu.com.au/packs-and-bags/packs/wayfarer-55…) This pack can be regularly bought for $200. The trick of course is to wear your heaviest clothes, carry electronics in pockets and in your hands and you'll have no problems.

      Wayfarer: 63cm L x 28cm W x 23cm H
      Farpoint 55: 60 x 44 x 33 cm

Normal carry on sizes are slightly smaller than this, but if the bag is under 7kg and half your stuff is on your body / in your pockets, the Wayfarer at least looks tiny. I can't see you having any issues as long as you're under the weight limit. The way I see it, if you're backpacking you should never be traveling with more than 10kg anyway. You can easily shift 3kg onto your body and hands. I have NEVER had my bag checked for size, only weight, and I've flown Wizz, Air Asia, Scoot, Cebu Pacific, etc etc (Ryanair / Easyjet may be stricter).

A complicating factor will be the day pack - you'll need to store it in the main compartment to get past airport check in.

I've been meaning to 'upgrade' from the Wayfarer to an Osprey for a while, but I'm actually pretty happy with the Wayfarer. That said the Ospreys look awesome and have a great reputation.

Technically no, the 55L (which is a 40L + 15L) is too long for cabin size, but you can get away with it depending on the airline. I suggest the 40L Farpoint which is the perfect (legit) carry on size, and unlike the Porter it has a proper harness (Source: I have both).

    • Hey mate,

Apparently the 70L can be compressed down to the same size as the 55L if its not completely filled.

There is a picture here for comparison. (55 on the left, 70 on the right) http://pennycaravan.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/DSC00095.…

They are pretty close in dimensions, I ended up going for the 70L simply because I don't mind having to check it in, plus i would rather the slightly extra room so I can pack more stuff and use it instead of a suitcase. I think the detachable pack would be suitable enough for me to use as my carry-on.

      Another pic for comparison;

  • 1.78kg still a bit heavy when allowance is 7kg i just use a cheap backpack less than 1kg.

You may be able to carry the 55L onto planes sometimes but there are reports that this isn't always allowed as it is slightly too big. There are two models and the M/L is 25 x 13 x 12 inches with carry-on commonly limited to 22 x 14 x 9.

Yup I've taken the S/M size as carry-on, just not fully loaded. Osprey themselves only list the dimensions of the M/L size so it's usually reported as too big, but the S/M is shorter and the metal frame is 56cm which just sneaks in. I always get my bag measured though because no one believes it.

  • with the size m/l, i think you need to be at least 175cm tall?

I have farpoint 70 m/l, it is still kinda big for me.

  • Thanks for the info, appreciate :-)

  • I went through all this palaver a year ago and ended up with the tiny Farpoint 40 M/L which was close to the limits then but sure to get through everywhere. Everyone online swears they never have any problems with the Porter 46 litre but it is over some limits a smidge. 40 litres is plenty big enough for me using vacuum compression bags if necessary.

55 litres, maybe: 70 litre bag carry on- I don't think so.

  • I just bought a Porter A few weeks ago and used it over Easter to East Timor. Is great. Jetstar had no problems (nor did AirNorth, but you could prob tame anything with them).

It really is great. Hardest part is ensuring it remains light.

I got the Porter on sale at wildearth a few weeks back for less than $120.

  • Used the 55L when I went backpacking for 4 months in Asia. It is the best backpack ever! Unfortunately I couldn't always use it as carry on but I always had it packed to the brim.

  • got this yesterday
my cheapie went bust while coming back from bali

  • Have the farpoint 40. Good bag, it was near the limit of carry on size when i was looking, 55 will definitely be too big.

  • This is tempting, I've been looking for a carry on backpack and was considering a black wolf similar to this:
    Blackwolf Tempo 40l

Apart from not having the detachable day pack is there anything that sets the Osprey apart from the blackwolf bag?
