I almost went for this, but then I saw this on the specs on the Sony website:
Water Proof Yes (In use with Waterproof Case (SPK-AZ1))
Underwater Shooting No (Not focus in underwater)so no good for swimming / snorkelling / diving then?
Swimming/surfing/surface watersports will be fine, but no good for underwater footage.
There are DIY solutions but it involves a bit of messing around. You need to hack a 40mm flat glass lens (suggested sources are from a UV filter) to fit on the supplied waterproof housing. Some helpful guys have uploaded files to Thingiverse and Shapeways that you can either buy or print to enable a watertight seal…
For me, it's too much time and trouble to sort out. I'd be better off working a few extra hrs to buy the higher end camera with the flat lens accessory.
I would have jumped at this, I've been eyeing the Sony action cams lately - however there is no 'dive door' or flat lens option for the underwater case on this Sony model.
That's a deal-breaker for me… without a flat lens, the camera can't focus underwater.Thanks OP, I ordered one

Run time around 80 minutes but you can add an external battery apparently to extend this.
It looks like you need a larger memory card as it doesn't "loop" like the Cirq Fly6/12 products (although manufacturer told me you can't use an external battery with those which was a deal breaker for me).https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/actioncam/hdr-az1-kit#re… (if I've clicked on the right one)
It's a good price - if you don't need the underwater focus then you should be happy :)
I've read that people use external battery packs to run this camera for many hours, for bike touring etc.Yeah I wanted something for use on the bicycle, both commuting and touring although it remains to be seen how my dynohubs on my bike and its trailer can cope with the power needs. Theres some big distances between charging opportunities touring around WA.
I'm hoping to utilise the Xiaomi batteries. Having no interest in becoming the ever popular shark burly, I'm in no way concerned about the lack of its underwater capabilities.
This deal is even better than the Sony damaged packaging one last week:

Which I hummed and haaa'd about for too long and dipped out on.
thought long and hard about this but decided to try a gitup git 2 instead. $147 from banggood. Some youtube reviews that seemed to suggest its a pretty good camera. Suggestions, advice etc very welcome.
No advice from me as this will be my first action cam.
One of the reasons I went with it, was my logic suggested, hopefully the ability to sell without huge loss if I didn't like the unit.
Still lots of places online trying to move these at full non discounted price.
Time will tell I guess.
They sold out very fast.
I dilly dallied about buying one of the action cams and it sold out while I was researching.
Or maybe they didn't sell out 'cos they are back on COTD but at $398 now!
FYI. Reviews show the action camera only has a 1 hr battery life.
