VPN: TorGuard 50% off using: TGLifetime50

Hey guys, this is my first deal, I've been wanting to give back to this community for a while so hopefully this is a good one. I was reviewing another OBers posts and saw they listed a reddit feed with all the VPN deals in it. TorGuard seems well regarded as a VPN service and currently they are running a 50% off sale, which I believe is for life (meaning it's always a discount rate you pay).

I just purchased, but stupidly I'm travelling on a bus in Vietnam so they held my order for checking if it's fraud or not… nonetheless, I'll come back on and review it once they clear it and I can test it out.

In the meantime, happy Friday :)

  • Good for Netflix?

    • @mwblink86. I asked their support dude and he said this pre-scripted answer:

"Regarding comments from Netflix that they will restrict access to VPN users, we can only say that we will not be affected.
We are and we will continue to provide our VPN service to our clients across the globe, and we will continue to offer ability for anyone to access catalogues from different countries, so they can get all of the content Netflix offers.

Netflix works and will work with TorGuard's premium VPN service!"

    • No it won't work for most Netflix countries

      • Sure about that? I haven't got Torguard so I can't comment 100% if it works or not for gaining access to the USA Netflix library - but it's looking positive from what I can find.

"In TorGuard’s case the users were able to quickly gain access again [to USA Netflix, after the VPN was blocked by Netflix] by logging into another U.S. location."

"TorGuard told us that if Netflix continues with a strict ban policy, they will provide an easy solution to bypass the blocks."

        • Yeah I have a subscription.

They're fairly quick to connect & speed (although according to Ookla my speed drops from 80mbps -> 35mbps in Oz - boohoo for me eh?)
The only thing with the 1250 servers, you can only select Country->City (most have multiple servers). I like the connection options of chosing UDP/TCP and encyption level None/Blowfish128/AES128/AES256

I recommend them for excellent bang for your buck.

        • @supabrudda:

So you can't access Netflix's USA library at all? Have you tried connecting to different USA nodes?

I'm able to using the free VPNs which are horribly congested and with known IP ranges - so I find it hard to think that a well known paid VPN wouldn't be able to access the Netflix USA library.

        • @supabrudda: no encryption while using a vpn? Fair enough…

        • @voolish: Yeah it's basically a proxy.
You'd use the various options trading off speed vs security.

@c0balt: yeah I tried maybe a dozen locations & even more countries.

Since IPv4 addresses are quite rare, it's not easy (or cheap) for VPN providers to buy blocks of them. But I suspect Netflix just grabbed subscriptions to most VPN providers, worked out what their IP address blocks are & just banned whole blocks of IPs. If they were smarter they'd just ban blocks of IP's used by COLO datacentres. They might even be doing this as I've heard of people who've been unable to access Netflix from work.

DNS4ME still works for me (using Canada).

        • @supabrudda:

Damn.. that's not what I wanted to hear.

Thanks though as I was considering jumping on this. I'll keep looking around.

@c0balt: if you're just after Netflix US, then it's cheaper to rent a VPS & setup you're own.

          Here's one
          https://github.com/ab77/netflix-proxy

Or for $us3 you can get these guys to do it
          https://privatepackets.io

          For DNS route
as I said I use dns4me via canada
          http://www.viperdns.com ($us20)
          or https://freenetflixdnscodes.com (free US only)

or have a read of site to get some recommendations

    • Can confirm you can access the following countries on tg

      . Netherlands
      . Canada
      . USA
      . UK

    • Thanks Ericc, I'm a Reddit retard… tried to access the post and only succeeded in clicking through to torguard.

      I've updated the OB listing.

      • +2

No eric is wrong, you should be linking to the actual site and not the reddit post.

"Always link directly to the specific product page."
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:deal_posting_guidelin…

If you found it via the reddit post then you can credit that in the description area of the post, but your product link should be linking directly to torguard.net and not reddit.

There's no reason to make every person who wants to get Torguard to have to go from this post to reddit and then to Torguard - it's waste of time and bandwidth.

        Nice find though.

        • +1

The reddit is an affiliate link.

          @zappa:

I didn't even see the referral link till you mentioned it. So ericc coerced a new poster into unwillingly introducing the referral link when the original link was fine. Intentional or not, ericc did something pretty bad there.

We should report his post and the link, I am.

        • @c0balt:

Fixed. Thanks everyone. Yes, link directly to the store.

  • This has been a deal for months now? It's not new.

    • Got a link/source before making that claim?

      • A quick ozbargain.com.au search will show the many many posts for exactly the same offer. For some reason they're marked as expired but it never did expire. I'm not going to post links to that many prior deals. Have a look yourself. Actually OP should have looked first.

        • Well anyone who does a quick search can see that not only is this is the first time there has been a Torguard deal on this site in more than 2 months, but they are different coupon codes also. All those previous deals are expired and their codes don't work.

So it's really you who should be looking before posting and not the OP.

        • +1

Yeah TorGuard advertises it every so often & says it expires, but it never seems too. Maybe you've seen some of my comments in VPN posts recently where I've mentioned this deal?

        • +1

          @c0balt:

There's only 3 past codes. This is one of them and it never stopped working.

        • @Owl:

You're right. Digging deeper I found that code past a fair few deals.

So a quick search showed all expired deals and the last 3 deals had different codes, but a deeper search did find that same code for the same deal further back (marked expired also).

I went back and upvoted your comments, it's not much - but it's all I can do now.

  • Sooooo….forgive me but does anyone have an opinion regarding TorGaurds speed and security as a VPN provider? I see the 'drop' example above of 80 to 35MBPS but most VPN deals like this focus more on circumventing streaming security than security or features. Can anyone pass comment on how they are as a VPN provider?

    Cheers!

    • Unfortunately I've never had 80mb internet to test with!

At a 'normal end', found it usually works well. I rotate through maybe 4 common servers, and around 10 in general. If one is busy there's always one that's good.

  • Ive been with TorGuard for awhile now, and see a drop in speed, its probably more significant than before i.e i get 500kb now i get 300 max…Its about right…Ive found over th last few months its been harder to find a server for torrents though :(

    • Appreciate the help you two. 😄

  • I am currently using Torguard for my VPN and I get full speeds with well seeded Torrents with my 100/40 NBN connection.

Unusual thing is, DU meter reads that I am downloading around 10MB/s, however the torrent program only shows around 50% of that (5MB/s).

    • Seems to happen with any bandwidth program and torrenting programs —- anyone know why? is there a setting to change it so they both display correctly?.

Has anyone been able to buy the 11.95 bundle?. I try to select it but it keeps redirecting to the 5.95 proxy one…

      • Yep, I was able to.

Chat to their online chat dudes, they are the ones that helped me out.

  • Hi guys,
How does this VPN compare to PIA? I'm stuck on if I should go with Torguard or PIA.
    Thanks :)

    • +2

I tried PIA and I got a refund with their money back guarantee. The speeds were terrible no matter which server I connected to. I think PIA user base is too big for the bandwidth they have. At the moment Torguards speeds are excellent, I just hope thy keep on upgrading their capacity when more people switch over to them.
