Day One 2 - Free iPhone Journal App - $7.99 Saving (Some Steps Required)

1960

Day One is a highly regarded personal journal for the iPhone.
Version 2 is just out, comes with a lot of new features and controversy (specifically the removal of dropbox as the sync service).

To get this app for free:

1: Open the Apple Store app on your iPhone (not the app store app).
2. Tap the "Stores" button at the bottom.
3. Scroll to "Get it the way your want" section
4. Swipe across 2 times until you see "Keep a beautiful Journal"
5. Tap, It should open the app store.
6. Tap Redeem up the top right
7. Free app

  • Thanks

  • Thanks, downloaded for me. For some reason it gave me Day One Classic and Day One 2.

Now I just have to motivate myself to use it!!

  • Thanks! The previous version worked great, looking forward to seeing what this one can do.

  • What do you mean by Apple Store App?

  • +2

DAMN! I paid full price when it first came out.

I can say this is a much improved version of DAY ONE (Gen 1). Now the ability to put more than one photos and different fonts, etc…

downside, when you're scrolling thru the photos it can be a bit laggy, has been doing this since it came out, and then every so often the app crashed. hopefully the next update they'll fix this issue.

(P.S: for those people who have DAY ONE (Gen 1) and wants to transfer their old data to this new version, its easy. unfortunately this second version no longer use dropbox for iCloud backup)

    Great, downloaded freebie.
Now, what do I do with it?

  • OP, you are beautiful.

  • Thanks OP. Been using the original for the past 4 months and was interested in the new version

  • Thanks!

Any chance the OS X app is free, too?

A bit different on the iPad. Select Stores in the Apple Store app, then choose a location. Once that's done, you'll see the Day One 2 app on the bottom right.

Very confusing as my wife is out with her iPhone and her iPad didn't have the Apple Store app installed. Maybe it'll be obvious if you've previously selected a store already.

Wow. Excellent instructions. And app. Thank you OP!

  • Wow, only bought this 2 days ago :( great app though!

    Thank you so much OP!

I literally was about to buy this, then thought "I'll just check OzB first" :)

  • What makes a journaling app better than just using an ongoing document or Google Keep or Evernote or somesuch? What happens if the Developer disappears?

    • +3

It's free and worth giving a try. I prefer it's design and user interface to all the other alternatives i've tried.

Developer disappearance is always a risk with any app you invest time and effort into. Google is among the worst for shutting down things they are bored with.

      The app has export functionality.

      • Thanks! Do you have an Android suggestion as well? Too many options :)

  • Needs IOS 9.0+

  • Method works on iPad too

  • +1

This is great, I use day one classic to record the progress of baby budgies when they hatch. Now I can upload lot's more photos instead of one but I'm not sure yet about no dropbox sync. I'll give it a try anyway.

    Thanks OP!!

  • what is the android alternative?

  • I actually regularly used the Day One app but decided not to purchase 2 because of the price. Good find!

    • In a similar boat, however I like the fact that I can use day one classic on my OS X laptop and iOS devices. It's great that the iOS version is free but the OS X version is priced at 45$ :/

  • Thanks very much for this! Day One is one of my favourite apps, and I have been thinking about downloading the new version so this is a brilliant deal! I downloaded it on my iPhone and so I automatically got it on my iPad too. I am very happy! :)

  • Thanks OP!

I've been using "Grid Diary" which syncs across my iPad and IPhone. The user interface is clean and asks me questions in a grid. I try and use it every night before bed, and it prompts me with things like "Have you got your lunch prepared for tomorrow?", "Have you got your clothes prepared for tomorrow?", "What's on at work tomorrow?" Etc.

Those of you that don't really know what to journal - give Grid Diary a go first. It's Free, but I upgraded to Pro ($7.99) to allow syncing to different devices.

  • Nice find OP. Does anyone know if this method works for the desktop version of Day One 2?

  • Top write up and instructions!

  • APPLE STORE APP needs to be installed separately its not Default App store. thanks

  • Successfully used this deal today - still active.

  • Just got "Error. We're sorry. Due to high demand, this offer is not available anymore. Please check the Apple Store app often for new promotions"

So much for expiring 1 May 2016 :|.

    • Back up? Just got it today.

  • Works for ipad users as well. Not sure if that was obvious or not ;)
