just bought a seagate mypersonal cloud 4GB for $135 and thought that was cheap.

please don't turn NAS into the next eneeloop :)

    • +4

4GB for $135 is not cheap.

    • Which deal was that seagate please?

    • +3

please don't turn NAS into the next eneeloop :)

Please do! I always miss out, I just want to back up my files…

  • Guys is this drive any good?
seems there is two hard disk inside!
    Cheers

    • +2

Should be really good, it is two drives and can be used as a NAS.

      • I wonder what WD drives will be in it? Hopefully REDS!!!! Most likely GREENS.

        • yes, I would like to know if they are 'reuseable' drives i.e. can they be pulled out and used elsewhere - my PVR only takes a max of 2TB, I just paid $105 for a single drive

        • @sandp:

There are two green drives in it and can be removed and used somewhere else.

        • @dosada:

Still not bad. Each drive retails for around $105. So 2 drives for $99 is a bargain

        • I bought this "on special" a year ago using an eBay voucher intended for the UK, and thought I got a good deal :) This one is epic.
Yes, it has WD Red drives inside. At least, mine did. There are different versions of this product, the newer one having a USB 3.0 port, but this one probably doesn't.
I'm running mine in mirrored mode, and performance is okay. Getting 67MB/s on gigabit ethernet.

        • @Make it so: 67MBps is really good.. You sure it's MB, not mb?
Coz I get less than 10MBps.
Did you do anything special for speed or was it out of the box that speed?

        • +1

@superm86: MBytes, writing large file straight to SSD. No special tweaks. Keep in mind that this unit apparently has slowness issues with Mac, for which I think workarounds exist. Transferring smaller files is also slower, as is to be expected.

  • So this is two 2Tb drives which gives 4Tb?

    • +1

raid1,means will only show 2tb. (mirror of each drive)

      • +2

Note: you can choose the RAID you use. If you don't want mirroring, you can have the full 4TB.

        • Maximum storage capacity with drive spanning
Out of the box, this two-drive system combines both drives into one big volume so they act like one drive for maximum capacity.

        • +2

Highly recommend everyone does the mirroring.

If drive spanning is used, then failure of just 1 drive will render the whole lot unusable, even on the surviving drive. So your chance of failure is doubled.

        • I have a mirrored drive (old WD mybookworld), but if one drive failed, I have no clue how I would retrieve the data off the other drive.

Would it simply appear in File Explorer as normal? Or would I need special software to retrieve it?

        • @b-radicool:

It should still appear as normal. if you configure it properly it should send you alerts or perhaps light up red. Mine just send email if something goes wrong.

  • Does anyone know if this work with a combination of PCs & Macs at home?

    • +5

      Yes, I know.

    • +3

Sure can, but depends on format of the drive:

      • If you format as NTFS, Windows is fine but Macs cannot write to the drive natively, but you can use a number of paid or free third party apps which can enable this
      • If you format as FAT32, then both can read and write but max size per file is limited to 4GB.
      • If you format as HFS, then only Macs can read/write
      • If you format as exFAT, then both can read/write but I dont know enough about this one's limitations so perhaps some other user can comment?
      • +4

Actually if used as a NAS the drive format should be irrelevant (it's likely the drive itself uses EXT3/4), support will be dependant on what network file systems the NAS supports, this one supports SMB (and NFS with some work) so it can be mounted on OSX and Windows.

        • +1

          Correct!

        • Dickbeaver is correct. I was thinking of when using the drive in a Non NAS context in a mixed OS environment (which is what I plan to do as I already have a NAS). Sorry should have been more clear!

      • I grabbed the Paragon software for NTFS writing on the Mac, had a discount voucher too (it's the OZB way!), and it'a been faultless for the last couple of years, and saved having to convert drives etc as I use a combo of PC and Macs.

      • -1

Why did ccrap's response get three up-votes when his advice is completely wrong? Drive format has zero relevance for NAS.

        • Oh look, a vote down with no reason.

Facts seemed to have no place here.

  • Thanks OP. Great price for 4TB

  • I have the 8TB version, these are great and solid through the WD my cloud drive.
Only issue is it's very slow to transfer over LAN. I wouldn't try Wifi transfer either.

    • How does streaming from it go over wifi?

      • +1

depending on the signal strength but rarely requires re-buffering for me.

  • Thanks OP, got one.
I've had a WD My book live die on me before (3TB version), remember at the time that there were lots of posts about failure attributed to poor ventilation and overheating the HDD. But the replacement drive has soldiered on now, I think for at least 2 years.
Any fears for this one overcome by price, raid, and need for more storage!

  • damn! ozbargaied

  • I think the website is losing it. It keeps saying I have to remove the item from cart or it freezes at checkout.

  • And its gone.

  • Sorry, WD My Book Live Duo 4TB Home Network Drive is no longer available and needs to be removed.

  • No longer available. Congrats to those quick enough to have grabbed one.

  • Should be a price error.
    It is normally 200+.

  • WD My Book Live Duo 4TB Home Network Drive

This product requires a minumum quantity of 1. Item "WD My Book Live Duo 4TB Home Network Drive" has been removed from the cart because it is out of stock.

  • No longer available :(

  • can it be used as a backup storage device? with macs Time capsule?

  • missed out here too! :(

  • Bugger, too late.

  • Stock just refreshed but not going past cart page.

  • Hopefully my order went through. Kept trying as it said stock wasn't available. Guessing someone else left it in their cart.

If you can still add to cart might work

  • The page is not found.

    Good luck ordering it.

  • Page no longer available

    • Anyone tried their luck in store?

      • Most likely a pricing error and would be more expensive in store

        • Well it was a "clearance" item so not necessarily a pricing error!!!

  • Wtf, expired 40 minutes after posting?

    • expired within 24mins!

  • Page is available but when you click "Add to cart" it shows dim screen with a "Cross", nothing happened.

  • The page you were after lived a good and happy life, but now it is no longer with us. That's ok though, because we have thousands more that are alive and just as great.

Price seems too good to be true?

    • Price error you think?

    • +2

I am sure the price is correct. I have snitched today a few even better bargains there just that they went to fast that i could have posted them here.

Just got an Order Confirmation from JB - Confirmed not a pricing error.

  • Definitely not a price error, even if i have just ordered minutes before posting it here, it shows now up as shipped!!!

  • Seem that most of the deal post here for jb hi-fi is being Ozbargained minutes after post.

  • damn i missed out on this.. just had 2x 3tb drives die in past week.

  • No! How did I miss this.

  • No!!

  • omg noooooo

  • Mine was delivered today morning by toll. That was quick.

  • I received ten items today, two are still outstanding.

    • Shame only two items were good.

      • What do you mean

        • Only two items were "outstanding".

          It's a joke ;)

  • Got mine this morning. That was bloody quick. Now its time to set it up :)

  • Sorry for the duplicate comment

  • Has anyone who has received the drives opened up the case to verify which drives are inside? I have purchased two and received a orange and a blue box???

Since one is for me and one for a friend i am trying to figure out which one to keep.

    • You are a contradiction mate!

      • What are you trying to say?

    • Mine is a blue box but yet to open yet!

    • Did some googling for you. Only orange boxes I can see are the 6TB model. You may want to check the specs - they may have run out of 4TB ones and sent you a 6TB?

      • Nah, the box clearly says it's 4TB

        • Well, everyone knows orange is faster than blue, so keep that one :)
Seriously though, check the model number. Newer versions have USB 3.0 ports.

  • Mine was delivered today. Definitely a 4tb haven't had a chance to take a look at the drives inside. Had a sticker on the box $499. In saying that the box looks faded and scratched as if it was really old stock

  • Any updates on which drive is in which box?
