A assume it is all stores, perhaps ring ahead at other stores to confirm.

I would think cheapest price ever?

  • Stale coffee no matter what the price isn't a bargain IMHO - not quite as dramatic/bad as cheap stale bread or shortlife meat BUT it's a time critical item that once you allow it to get outside that 2-3 weeks from roasting massively loses any discernable quality it MAY (and I say may as if it was Italian Blend it's prolly low end Brazilian with a bit of robusta all roasted dark enough to wipe out any of the bean characteristics) have originally had.

If you're serious about your coffee - find roaster who you can buy from and freeze whole beans in lots large enough to consume completely in a week. :-)

PS. Best before dates on supermarket coffee are all but meaningless as they more imply when it's ok to consume as a foodstuff - NOT when it's seriously best drunk if you care about taste etc.

PPS. All that said this is a VERY cheap price - so in that regard if you don't mind your coffee being a lil long in the tooth it'd be hard to beat on price. :-)

    • +1

I don't care if it was roasted months ago, its more that it is roasted 5 minutes short of being charcoal.

    • Nikko is right but at that price, it's worth a gamble. Dual wall baskets will likely produce the most favourable outcome. Single wall will probably just see a torrent of watery coffee with no crema.

I'd love to know when they were roasted…

      • I understand what you're saying and you're bang on that dual wall baskets are made for entry level machines and Mum's and Dad's to get an aesthetically pleasing shot - but it won't make the coffee taste any better as it's a fake/engineered crema. That said there's a pretty well backed school of thought that crema itself is actually of marginal benefit or perhaps negative for the taste of an espresso shot - so nothing to sweat over. :-)

Haha I'd say they were roasted a LONG time ago - generally I've seen supermarket beans with a 12mths Best Before Date - that seems to be their accepted standard.

@cryptos, roasting your own green (which I do myself using a KKTO inspired DIY roaster) is definitely potentially a good thing BUT if done badly certain to undo any good work at the time of extraction etc. Roasting/blending etc is a real art in it's own right - and there's so many good small roasters around these days that one can buy a few kg when they're on special - break into ~250g bags (ideal if you can vacuum pack) - put in freezer and thus get pretty good fresh coffee at pretty good prices (you pull the bag out and leave OUT, don't just get a few beans out and put it back in the freezer - not good for the oils/volatiles). :-)

        • Oh it's not about the crema. It's more that it would be a struggle to get a consistent extraction. The dual wall would guarantee that where a single wall would just run.

Got any pics of your KKTO? I settled on a Behmor as I'm not so serious about roasting but still like to conjure up some blends for the aeropress.

        • @Trickey: Fair point on the extraction. :-)

Yes, I have pix but you're better off googling it - very widely replicated build and to be honest mine is but on functionality but not aesthetics - so not the best example.

I used to use a coretto for several yrs (breadmaker + heat gun) - the KKTO is worlds ahead in every regard. :-)

        • @Nikko: I started out with a modified popcorn popper. Worked well but it required incredible timing to get the roast right because of the extreme heat in such a small space. Worked best with a 30cm fan underneath to push the roasting time out to 10+ minutes or it would be done in under 2 minutes.

The Behmor is worlds ahead of the popcorn popper but it was a very fun experiment.

        • @Trickey: Ah yes the poppers…..never understood how folks went that path :-)

A good low tech/cost option is partially roasting in the oven and then finishing off in a wok or frying pan. Best if you can do the 2nd part on an outdoor spot as the chaff/smoke is a PITA. But the KKTO is fantastic, highly recommend it.

    • If your really serious you can roast your own beans, even I've done that :)
