Sony XAV-68BT 6.2" WVGA DVD/CD/USB/BT Receiver $238 (Save $100) @ JB Hi-Fi (Instant Deal Req.)

160

Nice unit for that price, reviews are mainly positive. Not the newest model but definitely better than most of the factory units in cars.

  • Showing as $398 here. (+ $9.95 delivery)

    • You need the instant deal code to get the price.

      • That wasn't mentioned in the original post.

  • One quick question: If I replace the multimedia system on my car with this one, will it void the factory warranty? Thanks.

    • You would probably need to ask that question to your dealer.

I heard that if you get aftermarket tint can cause you to void your warranty, however I have a Mitsubishi ASX and have added aftermarket DRL, aftermarket tint and a double din head unit and I was still able to claim warranty trhough the dealer on fault side mirrors.

You sure they weren't just trying to sell their own Tint…

        • +1

Of course they were trying to sell their tint. 3x the cost of how much I bought it from a local tinter.

    • +1

      No

    • Yes it will. You also have to declare new change to your insurance company if you have comphrehensive one

      • +1

Not necessarily, my Insurer didn't care at all I had modified the car. As long as it's road worthy.

Will probably depend on the manufacturer. Most I suspect would not consider changing the head unit in the car a major change or modification. Probably worth checking if you're concerned, or at leat keeping the old unit so you can swap it back in later if required. My concern/issue is that changing the head unit means the info on my dash and the buttons on my wheel will no longer work. So that's a nuisance as well as potentially makes it a little more dangerous (changing volume at the moment can be done easily by pressing the buttons on the wheel, but if I can't do that then I'd need to reach down to the unit itself.)

You can get interfaces that adapt some of the controls, but with mixed success….

    • If your warranty is unrelated to the new head unit…
EG: If your gearbox starts making weird noises… usual warranty applies.
If you start having electrical problems then that may be a different story.

I would never change a HU in a new car, or any recent one really. They are too integrated these days. This is coming from someone who spent a fortune in car audio too in the day. An older car, go for it.

Just picked one from Merrylands NSW. Price marked as special on $398. Used the voucher I had received to get $160 off. Ended up paying $238, not $228.
I think OP needs to correct the title & description? Or is the post for $100 off voucher, and not $160? I'm confused!

  • Omg. Bought this without even thinking about how little i know about replacing the head unit in my car… Help!

    • What car?

      • 2012 subaru forester (08 model year)

        • Ah yep, I believe that's a simple double din, just that you'll lose the Bluetooth buttons on the wheel.

Maybe ask around your mates and see if anyone has experience? They're fairly easy when you know what you're doing

        • @Spackbace:

          Thanks!

Does this seem like a reasonable overview?

Not too fuss with the bluetooth calling controls on the steering wheel (the interfacing is pretty hopeless on the oem).

          @Jackal:

Yeah that looks about right :) you'll need the aerpro harness adapters (Subaru to blank, blank to sony) so it's plug and play.

But you'll likely have an external mic for the BT that you should run up the side pillar to come out in the roof lining

        • @Spackbace:

Picked up my unit. Thanks for pointing me to aerpro, now realised the connectors are going to cost a fair bit as I'm not keen on soldering/splicing/gimping - whatever <—— means)

Can I just double-check these are what I need?

http://aerpro.com/chsu3c (adapter which includes steering wheel control)
http://aerpro.com/apsonypl (SWC patch to sony head unit)
          http://aerpro.com/app8sp4 (harness to sony)
http://aerpro.com/ct10su02 (T-harness? "Allows your aftermarket Blue tooth kit to work with your car's speakers directly when on a phone call and revert back to the stereo when the phone is not in use")

Additionally I couldn't find an adaptor for the OEM rear view camera (http://aerpro.com/products/oem_video_retention)

Seems like the additional accessories/wiring might end up costing more than the unit itself :(

        • +1

          @Jackal:

T-Harness looks pointless, just use the answer button on the stereo itself

Forgot about SWC, yep looks like you need the first 3, plus I think you'll need the ISO adapter

Rear view camera depends on the plug that it has. You'll probably need to wait until the headunit is out to properly determine that one

          CHSU3C - $95 (ouch)
          APSONYPL - $13
APP8SP4 Sony av to iso harness 16 pin - $22

Looks like Autobahn might be the way to go.

The beauty about using adapters is that you can take it out if need be, and go back to stock.

        • @Spackbace:

          Thanks heaps mate.

Doesn't the CHSU3C already include the ISO adapter? (both male plugs are black).
The head unit has a standard RCA input (edit - for the reverse camera)…it's the custom plug on the subaru end that's the headache…

        • +1

          @Jackal:

I'm not sure :/ Maybe just hope that someone at Autobahn knows what they're talking about? Go in there with the model number of your Sony stereo, and hopefully you'll get the best advice. If they give you the wrong adapter, at least you'll be able to go back there and swap it

        • @Spackbace:

Autobahn or SCA (any difference in expertise/service?)

        • @Jackal:

Doubt it. SCA sell the adapters? I didn't look lol
