  • What's the difference between OP model and https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&…

    • +1

OP's model is slot type, that model is tray type (which is $30 at MSY).

  • The other model is 14mm Thick (1mm thinner ) and weighs 200gm (40grams less) but has a slide out tray while this one is a slot type.

  • There are plenty of USB DVD-RW Drives around this price point, I don't see what's so special about this one that made it worth $55/$99 in the first place, to be honest, but I would still recommend USB DVD-RW Drives in general over Internal ones.

Its a quality well known brand. There are plenty of cheap unbranded ones on ebay around this price point. Could you please post some info on quality brands around this price point?

        • Almost all of those listings you gave are for another LG the GP60NB60 and the similar LG GP65NB50 which has been spoken about in earlier posts.
That model and every single one of the models shown in your link have a tray instead of a slot.
I think there may be a few people who prefer the slot loading to the tray. I don't know of any name brand slot loading model for this price or even close to it.

@ONSALE: I don't think it really matters Tray vs Slot, except it is easier for things to get stuck in a slot.

What I really like about my Tray-loading USB DVD Drive is that because it's designed for the possibility of movement while the drive is in use, the disk needs to actually be clicked into a spindle in the middle (rather than be free standing), and the spindle holds onto the disc tightly and always dead-centre. I've worked with MacBooks where the slot loading drive sometimes gets jammed due to complexities of the slot-loading mechanism the disc can sometimes become off-centre.

Mind you I don't use DVD drives often enough to really care that much (it's an obsolete technology still around, and I consider my external to be the last drive I'll ever need to buy for all of my computers). I suppose if you are going to use DVDs quite a lot you might care a bit more on Slot vs Tray, and other exact features.

        • @The Land of Smeg:

Slot load has its place, especially for tight spots or vertical placement. Also no flimsy tray to break. Can't play irregular or small discs tho.

        • @quarrymaster: Do you know anywhere I can get a BR external writer for under $100. PC Case Gear has a quality looking Samsung for $109 but my budget is around $70-85. Thanks in advance.

        • @quarrymaster: I don't find the tray on mine to be Flimsy but I don't blame people for thinking that in general. As I don't really want to buy any more DVD drives in the future I also chose tray for maximum compatibility in case I'm ever in an unfortunate situation that I have to use a mini/irregular disc which I can say I've had the displeasure of having to do before.

        • @juzz0:
I went to http://thewirecutter.com, looked at their recommendations and found it around $100 on eBay from a local seller. Didn't buy it tho, that was a few months ago.

        • @The Land of Smeg:
The point is, your preference while logical to you is completely irrelevant to those who'd prefer this and consider it a deal.

  • Wish these guys did postage to nsw
