Sony RX100 MKIII - $694.68 @ JB Hifi + GST Claim - Priced Fairly?

Not the historically cheapest on Ozbargain, but i'll be leaving on a holiday in 3 weeks so will be able to claim back the GST component.
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/compact-cameras/sony/sony-…
JB Hifi $764.15 take 10% GST = $694.68

Only post on OzB for sub $700 can be seen here:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/215435

Countless ads on gumtree/sony still have this camera going pre-owned/refurb for $700 or high $600's.

Yay or Nay?

Thanks!

What utter rubbish. I doubt it will be much cheaper overseas and even if it is you won't be protected by the ACL or possibly any warranty at all.

It really is a Absolutely fantastic price for a fantastic camera!!. You should post this as a bargain if you haven't already.

If they still are giving out $30 sony store vouchers in the box I'd recommend the extra battery pack which is really useful if you forget to charge your camera one night.

A few tips with the TRS refund.

      • The line at the airport can be terrible. When I went in 2014 it took me an extra 40 minutes. I believe this has changed now and you can just drop your receipt off in a box and they'll transfer the refund to you.

      • When I told JB I was going overseas they hand wrote me a special receipt. I think it had my name and address on it which I think is only necessary if you are buying something greater than $1000 but I guess they were just covering their backs. Still double check about what you need.

      • Oh and finally make a copy of the receipt to leave at home in case you have to leave it with them in the drop box so you still have it should you need it for warranty purposes.

      • I don't believe you can drop off the receipt as customs have to be satisfied that you actually took the product out of the country.

You can register your TRS claim on the internet and you go in a different queue to people who haven't pre-registered.

The TRS desk is after customs. Just before duty free and the gates. If you have gotten that far without a valid ticket and passport then congratulations.

          That makes bugger all difference.

        • @knick007:

Read again. Without them inspecting the product at the airport, how do they confirm you have taken the product overseas?

Otherwise I'll be claiming the GST from my washing machine.

        • @JB1:

I don't know how they check… But according to Whirlpool it happens on occasion. http://whrl.pl/ReboyI

        • @knick007:

From my experience at Melbourne Airport, they ask to inspect each item one by one and then check that it matches the receipt.

        • @JB1: That was my experience as well. However I'm just going by what I've read and what I've seen recently.

      • Thanks, I’ve actually done some googling for prices in Singapore where I’ll be doing a stopover and realise that sony has fixed pricing on most of their current line of products, even in the pre owned market there, we’re looking at $700SGD with some accessories thrown in. And with the SGD being only marginally lower than the AUD and a GST refund of only 7%, I think I’ll probably be better off buying it local.

        • Apart from not saving much you won't have a warranty to take a risk with no warranty in my opinion you really need to be saving over $200.

You could grab a few accessories while in Singapore. The leather case looks really nice for example. And as I said before spare batteries are always useful.

          Enjoy your new camera!!

      • guess you dont shop much on your holidays. Depend on which country, some are cheaper while others are more expensive. if you think OZ sell the cheapest items, worldwide you're so foolish. All big brand such as Sony do have an international warranty. Only items on a camera not on intern. warranty are the lenses

        • All big brand such as Sony do have an international warranty.

Not always they don't… Apple for example doesn't have a international warranty on iPhones or iPads.

I've bought a canon camera overseas before. It broke and they fixed it no problem but I had to send it back to the US.

I am fully aware of Australia in general being more expensive but for big brands such as Sony, Apple they price fix all their products so it isn't any cheaper. We also have pretty good consumer laws meaning buying products locally and getting the GST off is the best way to buy electronics.

  • Advise if you're shopping in Singapore, most items are similar pricing as OZ just abit cheaper + our stronger currency. Ask for Discounts and if they dont give ask for extra accessories (80% of times they give in). I shop alot in singapore everytime i go on holiday. If you get internation brand they always have international warranty

ended up buying a pre owned one without box for $500 with an extra battery and screen protector thrown in for good measure.

camera body was in perfect nick, very very happy camper for the price i paid.

thank you all for the contribution!

    • Hey mate, was this eBay/Gumtree I'm guessing?

      • was for sale on OCAU actually.

    • Damnit! These cameras are back up to $999 at JB Hifi now… Looks like I just missed out and I'm heading overseas in 10 days lol. They hold their value really well, or the people who have them listed don't want to budge on price. One weirdo on Ebay wouldn't let me inspect his or send me a copy of the invoice… said he couldn't be bothered and my only option was to buy it and if I didn't like it I could get my money back. So sadly the hunt continues, best M3 i've seen yet is around $700 with no card. Let me know if you know of any good deals going. Thanks MHz

that's horrible and straight up suss. mine provided hi-res pictures but the camera unit didn't have a serial sticker attached. I enquired about it and he told me he didn't buy the camera new but could furnish me with details of the person he bought it from should anything crop up and i need them. All in all still a pretty happy camper.

        • Good stuff. $500 is such a good deal compared to what everyone else is asking for; upwards of $700 and absolutely nobody will include an SD card! I can't help but feel people are getting more and more delusional each year with selling secondhand items. $700 second hand or $850 new -minus GST/TRS stamp duty… looks like I'll be going new.

the gumtree people are the worst of the lot, it's like they bought the camera and used it under a rock, completely oblivious to market movements and depreciation.

        • @avexdevil: haha true that, well said :)
