  • I love this site, best ever.

  • I thought I'd check some of the old Book Depository offers in the OzBargain archives. Many of the links didn't work, and another stated that the promotion was over.

This 10% off one from Christmas, however, does not expressly state that it's expired. Since BD seem to be fairly lax about the dates given in their T&Cs it could be worth experimenting: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/nlxmas?utm_source=NL-Header&…
(T&C states: "The Christmas discount code is only valid between 20th November and 11th December 2009.")

      • Invalid Coupon Code That coupon code is not recognised
      • Oh well! Thanks!

    • worth a shot i guess, but it came up invalid for me too.

    BookDepository rocks.
Paypal will charge their surcharge, and also convert the Aus dollar to US dollar. Possibly ends up negating the 5% discount all up.

However, I still call this a bargain just because the BookDepository rocks. And fast delivery as well as free shipping.

    • +1

      A) There is no Paypal surcharge to buyers, only fees for sellers
      B) You do not have to get Paypal to do the conversion. You can have your CC billed in the currency of the seller (GBP).

      • +4

There is no conversion fee if AUD is the selected currency:

"Our books are priced in Sterling, Euros, US Dollars, Australian Dollars and Canadian Dollars - there is a select currency dropdown menu at the top right of the homepage to change the currency display into the one most appropriate for you. We charge in the currency selected."

    • If you mean the rate that PayPal gives is inferior than the call rate, if you go through you bank, chances are it will be roughly the sane rate, not to mention you might need to pay foreign fees.

      • +2

Yes, the Paypal rate is inferior to that of the GE Wizard mastercard……always! A good 2-4 cents below market rates while mastercard is usually 1cent below market rates. Plus GE don't have foreign conversion fees. Paypal's poor conversion rate is well known.

Obviously doesn't apply to some regular bank issued Credit Cards, but certainly better if you have a Wizard.

Worth checking against bookdepository.com as well.

Random example from their popular books section, The Bro Code.

    $11.86 from .co.uk, $11.27 inc. 5% discount. $10.18 from .com.

    • +2

most of the books i buy, med textbooks, are cheaper on the .com site. So this is a good tip.

    • +1

+1 for the .com, as it's always cheaper than the .co.uk.

Its a shame that most of the books I get from overseas are actually cheaper (sometimes by 200%) than the ones in the local book stores.

    • Strangely a book I just bought was $2 cheaper on .co.uk as compared to .com . So it pays to check both by the looks of it.

  • +2

Book Depository is amazing. It's got me buying books again.

    • +2

it got me reading books again! :P

  • +1

I anticipated that this would be extended because the terms and conditions on http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/givemefive had stated April dates since about mid-March.

My only gripe is that over the past few weeks I've noticed that bookdepository.com (US site) is consistently and significantly cheaper by at least 10-20 for very large orders, even after the PayPal discount. I just wish they would release some promotional offer for this site as well but I'm taking advantage of the strong $AU while I can …

  • Is the .com free Worldwide shipping as well? The .co.uk site says 'free worldwide delivery' but .com just says 'free shipping' like Zavvi… (which isn't free to ship to Australia).

    Does anyone know?

    • +2

      Indeed it is.

    • +3

www title of .com site is "Free shipping world wide on all books from the bookdepository".

      So Yes :)

  • It's just a shame that stupid Paypal doesn't let you pay by Amex, even in foreign currency.

    • Ye, hate their new ruling on aussie Amex's. Once my current Amex expires next month I wont be able to register a new Amex to paypal. However, I never really used my Amex on Paypal because they always charged in USD.

  • Great find mate. Surprised someone beat Scotty to this (he normally is the first to post any BD deal).

  • +3

Why is everyone talking about a conversion fee? Mine automatically comes up in AUD and has done for months. So no extra fees..

    • Mine, too. Yay for The Book Depository charging in Australian dollars and yay for Westpac for not adding any fees when you buy something overseas in Australian dollars!

  • First time I've seen this site, found some books I've been looking everywhere for. Forgot to put the code in at checkout though, lol.

Btw how long does delivery usually take from the UK site for those who have shopped there before?

    • I live in regional QLD and they average a week for me

    • i ordered two books
the first came just a little over one week i think it was 8 or 9 days and the second just under two weeks 13 days i think it was

      • Not too shabby at all.

  • +1

The Paypal code works - enter at the top of the book depository order page.

    • For the US site or just the UK site?

      • Code worked for the UK site - don't know about US site.

  • +1

thanks for sharing this. i just bought a couple of books via paypal. the interface was very easy and i did not have to type much at all to complete the order. very nice.

  • Excellent :)

  • +1

Thanks for the discount code, much appreciated.

As a result, I just dropped ~$250 on two orders on books mostly from BookDepository.co.uk (but also a few on BookDepository.com).

I hope the workers at my local post office don't get too annoyed when 17 parcels suddenly arrive on the same day all addressed to me. :P

  • +1

I used this code today, and it still works :)

  • +1

I can confirm that this is still working as of 18th of May.

Not only that, but you don't even need to use paypal :-) Just use the discount code.

As always, the box for the discount code only comes up if you enter through the link above. Otherwise you won't see it.

  • +1

Confirming it still works on 22/05. First purchase with The Book Depository, prices are amazing and huge range too.

  • +1

Doesn't work any more as of June 1. Clicking on the site will just take you to the home page.

    • Thanks for the update kerfuffle…
