It's an okay price and nothing more. For probably less than $50 extra you could fly V Australia(and not much more for Qantas) and have a much better experience. United fly quite old planes on this route. No seat back IFE and customer service is quite lacking. I'd suggest reading some reviews or ask around before booking. For a small amount extra you could have a much more pleasant flight on this long route.
Agree.. United do use older planes.. and a few of them you do not get LCD screens to yourself (from the seat infront of you)
For ppl in Melbourne, United actually flys from Melbourne to Sydney then onto LA. It no longer fly Melbourne to LA direct.
Also United flys relatively older 747-400s, and there is a high probability that it does not have a personal entertainment system, i.e. just a big screen out front.
Pretty ordinary for the departure dates - all of 2 weeks.
OK, lets correct a few comments above.
The 747-400's UA fly are no older in general than the 747-400's that Qantas or anyone else flies. Historically they felt much older as the cabins were very old, but they have recently re-fitted the insides of all of their 747-400's so they are much better than before.
However, then there's In-flight Entertainment (IFE). The comments above saying you might not get your own screen are wrong. In truth, you WILL NOT get your own screen. None of the UA 747's have there own in-seat screens.
Food-wise and pretty much every other wise they are much the same as Qantas. OK, no hot chocolate after dinner like you get on Qantas, but that's hardly worth $200 extra.
I fly SYD/SFO multiple times a year, almost always on United, and as long as you're willing to put up with no personal screen (I have my own media player, so I really don't care) then there's really not enough difference between UA and Qantas to make paying any extra worth it.
Now if you're lucky enough to make it into Business class, United wins hands down. Their new 747 fitout, with lay-flat seats and your own personal 15" screen with AVOD (Audio-Video On Demand) is just so, so sweet!
I can't say that I've ever been upgraded on United(despite that fact they moved my from my original seat I booked well in advanced and ended up in the aisle against the bulkhead - just what you want with no seat back screen!). The planes may be the around the same age as Qantas but you don't get that feeling when you're inside them with the outdated interior and uncomfortable seating. It's not even really comparable to European discount long haul airlines.
I'm sure most people don't generally care but even the small touches such as having to pay for extra for a glass of (airline) wine with you meal. Although, I think I may have managed to get a free one on a trip back from LA once! The cabin crew I've had on all flights are not nearly as cheerful as those on nearly all other intercontinental airlines I've flown. Of course, there are always exceptions.
Take in to consideration that V Australia has more room between seats, wider seats and AVOD on all seats for what is the same price and it is probably a better deal although I've not yet flown them, I have heard a lot of positive reports.
Don't most fly the newer 777s though? I know that's what I took from melb>NZ>San Francisco last year.
Just so long as you don't take any guitars :)
Anyone who doesn't get the reference should search youtube for "united breaks guitars".. Moral of the story… don't screw with the musician :)
Travelled United Sydney to LA late November. Dreaded return journey which was just as bad. Travelled Virgin earlier. Different trip, worth the extra money (within reason). I wouldn't travel United again.
Flew Syd to NYC via San Fran last Jan with family. Don't recommend economy as it is minimum legroom and extremely uncomfortable. Rubbish was left around for longer than expected. Domestic seats were better that international. Try premium economy for an additional fee or fly with another airline.
good price, but depending on price difference I'd spend a bit more and go VAustralia.
That sale has been on for awhile though Flight Center.
Check Qantas.. currently they have flights from Bris/syd/melb direct for just over $1200… Qantus service & food is way better then United. I booked my flight a few months ago and flying to LA this Sunday. The flight back is on a A380, so I'll get to see what its like. $201 extra well spent, plus the points I get after this gives me a Silver Freq Flyers Card (more baggage allowance).
