G1W-CB 1080p Black Stealth Capacitor Dashcam - USD $40.59 (~AUD $54.44) Shipped from everbuying.net

3121

Refer to my previous deal on the BlueSkySea version. These have basically become the unofficial standard for budget DashCams. Featuring an all-black stealth look so they're not as obvious to surrounding drivers (especially when rear mounted!) plus a capacitor instead of a battery these are great little DashCams and as long as you use a Samsung EVO MicroSD Card and follow the config below you will enjoy solid hassle-free performance. Buy one and cover the road ahead or buy two and cover the action ahead & behind! The cameras come with Power Supplies and Suction Cup mounts however there are loads of different solutions for wiring these up permanently and neatly so you wont even know they're there! Refer to my front & rear install pics from the previous deal. I have personally bought dozens & dozens of these (some plain, others 'BlueSkySea' branded) and have fitted them in cars for friends & family and have never had a DOA or a faulty unit and most have been in use for many many months now. Fingers crossed these will be the same :) Can't recommend them enough.

Note: These cams appear as $54.44 on the product link however if you've never shopped with 'EverBuying' before and register then confirm your email address & update your Avatar then you get a credit of 120 points. This is the equivalent of $3.22 so follow the instructions to claim those points to bring the price down to $51.22. As a new user you also get a 10%-off Coupon however it will only work with the original price so you'll end up paying more so best not to apply that for this purchase. Also, please be aware that paying via PayPal bumps that lower price back up to $53.13. Not sure why but I assume it's their OS currency fee and this may also happen with Credit Card payments. All very confusing but all in all these are still the cheapest I could find right now. The next closest is another $6 or more from an eBay seller. As per all Chinese sourced products please be patient as these will most likely take 3-4+ weeks to arrive.

Associated accessories (personally used & recommended!):

Best 'Hassle-Free' Config (personally used & recommended!):

1st Menu
Resolution - 1080FHD (lower res offers longer recording time but blurry footage)
Loop Recording - 3 Minutes (each to their own but smaller files are more stable)
WDR - On (close to pointless but slightly enhances low light recording)
Exposure - +0.0 (default but feel free to experiment with this)
Motion Detection - Off (can fill up your card with locked files when switched on)
Record Audio - On (up to you but may be handy to record indicator & horn sounds etc.)
Date Stamp - On (advisable)
Gsensor - Off (can fill up your card with locked files when switched on)

2nd Menu
Date/Time - Must change format to YY/MM/DD before setting date! Change back once set. May not stick first few times but check back and re-set after regular use.
Beep Sound - Off (can get annoying as makes sounds during bootup/shutdown)
Language - English
TV Mode - PAL (menu exits after setting this. Press ‘M’ twice to re-enter menu)
Frequency - 50 Hz
Screen Saver - 3 Minutes (best set short to avoid the distraction)
IR LED - Off (white LED on this model so this feature is pointless)
Car Plate - Use up/down arrows to scroll characters and ’M’ to progress. Press REC when finished to save data.
Format - Formats SD Card (not critical but good to do this every now & then)
Default Setting - Reverts to default settings if required. Not ideal.
Version - Software version Info.

Enjoy!

Can this be powered up via USB?

I use my cigarette light power for USB ports already.

    Thanks

    • Yes. I use a 3m mini USB cable and use a dual usb port charger for my phone and the dashcam.

Are these of any use to people who don't have insurance? Also let's say you catch a hoon on camera and show it to the police, can they fine that hoon (provided you had the rego number recorded)? Cheers!

    • +6

Why would you not have insurance, if you can't afford insurance you can't afford to drive.

    • You mean full insurance, right? So you only have green slip.

Of course you can show it to police it does help.

        • Even you have insurance you still need this.

        • +1

You will need more than a video to get a win from an insurance company when you have zero insurance to fight your case.

        • -2

          @Elppa8:

I just wanted to know if for instance this would be worth adding to a bomb of a car to catch hoons doing burnouts in a residential area. I have no interest in insurance in this instance, I was purely wondering what other uses these things serve out of curiosity. I know what insurance is, next time I won't bother asking

        • Only to show people how stupid they are.

        • @llama:

Well that sucks. We have people doing burnouts around our area at all times of the night, was hoping for a stake-out. By the time the police get there they are long gone.

        • the guy that hits your car and says it is your fault has nothing to say when you show him the footage.

        • @porsche804: He may have nothing to say but he might destroy your dashcam.. I would probably not let them know you have a dash.

Thanks OP been looking to buy these.
Oh and for those that didn't notice…there's "extra 2% off for using mobile site"

  • How is night vission

  • Hi…sorry another Newb question.

Someone above mentioned that this will shut down when the Engine is turned off.

I was hoping….if there is a capacitor then the item can continue to record a few hours after the car is turned off.

Can someone please expand on this?

    • Nope, it turns off straight away unless your cigarette lighter port has power when the cars off.

    • No battery, the capacitor is only enough hold a few seconds to write the last video.

      • OK…thanks for the clarifications.

Then if I want continuous recording (or event recording) then I would have to hard wire via something like the PowerMagic Pro.

Personally I would prefer to avoid hardwiring (I don't know what I am doing). but then 'UPS' type systems are rather expensive too.

        Cheers….more reading required.

    • No. The capacitor can only just hold enough power to enable the camera to shut down safely to protect the file it was recording at the time. If you wish to have it constantly recording you will either need to buy a Power Bank or simply find an active 12V supply in your dash and hard wire it.

Is this thing really necessary for driver?

I what one, th price is great but still $60 dollars all up.

    • No it's not necessary for driver.

      • -1

Yep, my bro had one, and he often downloaded the clip of a hot chick walking the pedestrian.

That's pretty much all it does for him. I mean at least it earned itself a honour of providing a giggle.

        That Candii girl looks hot.

  • Guess this is like having an second level of insurance cover? Would come in handy when proving fault in an accident or monitoring vehicle for a short period?
Doe insurance companies accept footage as evidence? Has anyone had experience with this?

    • +5

      Yes, yes, yes and yes.

Don't forget, a Dashcam isn't just for you, it's also to help others and you'll probably find that you'll be using the footage from your own camera to help someone else you were following or nearby when they had their accident more than for your own benefit.

One example… I was an official witness to an accident about 6 months before I got my first Dashcam. Absolute blatent red-light runner ploughed into the side of the car in front of me after they innocently took off when the light turned green. As I was right behind them I was first on the scene to help both parties (was very difficult to give any assistance to the guilty party mind you… but of course I did) and put my hand up to help the innocent party in any way I could as it was such a stupid thing to happen… such obvious reasons why it happened too but I wont go into it here but lets just say the offender was 100% at fault across the board! Anyway, the innocent parties insurance company contacted me for a statement and a detailed diagram which took me 2-3 hours to complete as I wanted it to be as clear and thorough as possible so there was no question who was and wasn't at fault however if I had a dashcam I could've simply handed the footage over, done! It was actually that accident (well, 'incident' really) that prompted me to get my first Dashcam.

    • No, Probably not (and) No, Highly unlikely, Not me.

Insurance companies in Australia don't genrally bother with "who is at fault". You either make a claim, or you don't.

      • Are you not oversimplifying it?
If you make a claim then when it comes to determining whether you need to pay an excess or not, they would then try and determine who is at fault? If you are at fault then you pay excess. If you are not at fault you don't.
        Am I missing something?

        • Yeah, I suppose I am over simplifying it to a large degree, however I still doubt the value of these things in the real world (rather than just creating funny accident videos for Youtube). I suppose it depends on how and/or whether insurance company charges an excess or not.

The person who is deemed "at fault" is more likely something that be sorted by the cops, not the allegations of the respective drivers (who will both claim to be innocent if asked).

Also, the only footage you would tend to capture on a dashcam is looking forward, which means you take video of who YOU crash into, not the others who crash into you. I suppose you might be able to prove your traqffic light was green if you got T-boned at an intersection… I dunno.

In any case, the theory and the reality are 2 completely different things with insurance claims. Therefore, I would not rely on dashcam footage as the definitive defence.

    • This one a lot better 1080p vs 720p

    • As 'Superforever' noted above, the Harvey Norman 'Kaiser Baas' camera is only 720p whereby this is 1080p which allows for better ID of Number Plates and other detail you may not think about until you need it eg. distant signage, clearer facial ID of other drivers, other activities including illegal mobile phone use etc.

Also, and this may/may not matter to you, the G1W-CB is capacitor based so doesn't include a battery. Capacitor Dashcams are generally more expensive than battery versions. No reason to be though as I'm pretty sure they'd be on par or even cheaper to manufacture… but they're just 'newer' so someone's capitalising on it.

I got one as per op links. If you want quality dont buy it, save your money and buy good one later. If you "just" want to have a dashcam for style or for the value of money "cheap one", buy it.

    • Did you own one? Properly not. This one is fine and with good 1080p quality.

If you want quality dont buy it,

      • +5

        "good 1080p quality"

1080p can be misleading, not all lenses & sensors are the same and quality can vary greatly.

        • I own two the quality is fine for that price.

Of course don't compare it with Digital Camera quality as a dashcam it is fine.

        • @superforever: yes I owned one as it was popular here. But after looking for the video quality its suck and for me its not a dashcam. Useless night vision also if facing sun light directly it just to bright, you need manually to adjust the exposure. Just my thought if others ozb want to try just go ahead but not again for me.

        • @sonic2011: So which camera are you using now Sonic? Any links to recorded sunlight & night footage?? Would be interested to see how a 'better' camera performs. Also, how much was it please?

        • @SteveAndBelle: the bluesky one. good price for who need a "dashcam" desperately.

        • +6

@sonic2011: Ahhh, so you're still using a G1W even though you don't like it. Right. It would be interesting to see how much more you'd have to spend to get one that fully addresses the issues you raise that's all. $500… $1000 maybe?! Difficult for any camera to handle being hit with direct sunlight but I'm sure there are some that handle it better than others… but at what cost?!

        • @sonic2011: the quality is on par with that of a $300 dashcam lmao

  • +1

How much footage length can you store on the 32gb?

  • +1

For those who hesitant about purchasing I recommend you purchase it with Paypal as they offer "Free Return Shipping" in the event the camera arrives D.O.A or is faulty. https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/returns. Had to ship some side steps for a Santa Fe which was over 28kg back to Sydney from Brisbane and they covered the cost up to $50 (mind you only costed me around $48).

    • +1

Yeah, not bad but there are many ways to skin the 'G1W' cat. Some people have used Cigarette Lighter Sockets spliced onto the rear of the existing wiring feeding the Socket already in the dash and then just used the Power Supply that comes with the camera but tucked it all neatly away behind the dash. Two simple connections and you're away! You could even just use those press-on joiner connectors and the whole job will literally take seconds.

      Here's a plain-Jane socket with short wires attached ($1.74 inc. Postage): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12v-Female-Car-Cigar-Cigarette-Li…

Here's a 'better' version as it comes with an inline fuse holder for added protection ($2.30 inc. Postage): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-Car-Battery-Terminal-Clip-on-… This comes supplied with a '75W' (6A) fuse which is probably on the high side if you're just using the socket for a couple of cameras BUT it's lower than the 10A fuse already in the cars wiring so the 6A fuse will blow first giving you excellent protection. The supplied clips need to be cut off obviously.

Bought one just because this deal got so many positive votes

    • Ha, nice work ;) Don't forget to buy a Samsung Evo card to go with it and be sure to come back to this deal when it arrives in 3-4 weeks to refer to the setup guide in the description too OK.

      • Yep thanks. Bought the matching Samsung evo from the futu eBay deal too

  • +2

I got one. Capacitor version is not as good I thought. The power won't last as long as the battery version. Everything resets when the capacitor got drained.
There is a problem with firmware. If there is a protected file stored, it won't skip over and overwrite other files. Basically the whole dashcam stop working when the sdcard is full. Have to manually delete the protected file for the dashcam to work.

  • Would start stop engine tech make this turn off?

    • No, it shouldn't. The Cigarette Lighter socket should be energised in the 'ignition' mode with or without the engine running. Some cars are different as some have their sockets on constantly and some sockets found in the rear of some cars are purposely setup for permanent power for fridges etc. but they're the exception.

  • Could anyone recommend a decent dashcam that clips onto mirror and/or that's small (not standing out)

    • +2

      This one?

      • +1

Not sure why that was negged. The G1W-BC is decent, has a mirror attachment, is small and doesn't stand out. Oh well, can't please everyone :)

        • -2

Err, where is this mirror attachment you are talking about? Kaiden is looking for a dash cam he can clip onto the rear view mirror, the G1W only comes with a suction cup to attach to the front windscreen.

As for small. Compared to all the dash cams widely available out on the market now (go have a look at the comparison on Dashcamtalk forum), the G1W actually has a large front facade, together with that long suction cup attachment, it sticks out like a sore thumb on the front windscreen. BTW my parents have the G1W-C so I know what it looks like. Compared to my old Mini 0801, and my current SG9665GC and A118c, this G1W is huge when looked at front-on.

        • @edfoo: The Mirror Mount has been listed in the description since I posted it: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/380965039364 As for the discreetness I suppose it's down to how it's installed and what type of car it's in. Sure it might be larger than others but mounted properly up as high as possible (ie. so the actual lens is just below the black dot shading) it's very difficult to see. Kaidens question was fairly vague in more than one instance which is why I wondered why this G1W wouldn't fit the bill. Not to worry, they seem to be fine for most :)

        • @SteveAndBelle:
          @edfoo:

Thanks on the comments, I will check out the Dashcamtalk forums to see what they have, just looking for a second dashcam for my other car, shame there's no wifi video sync or something as I like to save my recordings at least monthly to confirm its working ok and to also check on the parking videos.

  • Does it have GPS and night mode?

    • No GPS.. What do you mean by night mode? Infrared?

      • Yes for driving at night.

  • How does one use the EB points? somehow PayPal ends up charging me $55ish even after 2% mobile site discount…
Edit: site goes into a redirect loop when trying to fetch the 'how to redeem' page

  • Only annoying thing about this is that it constantly loses the date and i cbf setting it up multiple times a week. Had some near misses which I'm glad were caught on film!

    • I don't have this problem but have to adjust clock regularly.

  • How do people find reading the numberplates
of other cars day and night
the video in youtube is not great at reading plate numbers

    • Pretty good. You normally just need to pause the footage to get the plate details clear as day however it can sometimes be tricky at night… not imposible, just tricky.

  • How are the suction cups, will they hold on in an accident? Don't need things flying around in the cabin in an accident.

  • +1

I own both the blueskysea and G1W-C dash cams. Both of them have an issue with the date resetting every time I turn the car off and back on. Does anyone experience the same thing or know a fix?

    • I use my car everyday I don't have this problem.

Some people said only happen if you don't use the car a few days.

      • Odd…I use my car almost every day. Guess I'll have to google this problem. It always resets to the same date as well in the year 2000.

  • Noob question: will this camera automatically turn on when u start driving or you have to manually turn it on?

    • automatically starts recording when the car turns on

    • I believe if you using your cigarette socket or hard wired it, it should record continuously. Mine one does record when I park (not this model)

      • are you saying it wont stop recording when i stop/park?

        • in my experience, it won't stop recording as long as you provide power, unless there is a setting prevent it to do so. Dash cam not only use while driving, it also uses to catch who reverse into your car while parking :)

      • Does your cigarette lighter have continuous power when it's off?

        • yes mine does. I do charge my phone while park and key off

    • Capacitor fitted models can't hold charge - they run pretty much entirely off the car. You might want to look at a model with a battery if you want one that'll continue recording after parking.

    • +1

Hang on, hang on! Most Cigarette lighter sockets get power when the ignition is on and loses power when the car is switched off. These cameras automatically start recording when power is applied to them then shut down nicely when power is removed therefore connecting them to the most common Cigarette Lighter socket (as described above) means they automatically start recording when you switch the ignition on and automatically shut down when you turn off the car. There are exceptions of course… some cars have sockets that supply power non-stop and in this case the cameras will continue to record 24/7 but these are the exception, most turn on & off with ignition.

      • totally agree

  • How to workaround with "states" in address information for shipping to Australia.

  • Because the date on capacitor only lasts 2 days before it is reset, is there a way to prolong this?

Is there a 12V relay timer that may turn on for 1 minute every 24 hours to power the unit so the date has enough power to not reset?

The timer will get its power from a constant power source cable in the car

    *** Edit

I think i found something on ebay, however not sure on their power consumption.

    1. $7.52 it says 4.4VA ( i assume 4W, this seems very high if it is correct)

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-16A-LCD-Digital-Display-Progr…

    1. $12.98 It says Power consumption: <1W

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DC-12V-50Hz-16A-DIN-Rail-Digital-…

Let me know if they are a good idea.

    • +1

It's not a good idea to mess up too much the car electric system if you don't know what you are doing. it may lead to a drained battery

  • Does this support more than 32 gb micro SD card?

    • yes up to 32

    • May or may not. I am using 128gb evo plus and it has been working fine though

      • does the card worth more than the dash cam?

        • Yep, but i have good price from workplace :P

        • @ericc: nice. does it last for a whole day worth of video?

        • +1

@legelas: about 30 hours of recording if i remember correctly

  • I got it down to $US 37.58 using mobile site and 110 EB point upon sign up. despite the website says $50.40 Paypal exchange rate bump it up to $52.27. OP please verify and update your post :)

    • do you have any cigarette socket up the back? I have one. It may hidden somewhere. take a look. other wise you have to hard wired it from rear lights
