Sorry, didn't notice 10 countries were listed above

Come on, who negged him? That's really crap. He is just trying to be very helpful and that is very much appreciated by me.
        Thank you.

    • Ok. True. For a limited time. And Ebay.
Not sure if I want to take that risk necessarily for $1. Also, should there be any issues (such as broken sim etc.) then I can get compensation from Vodafone (1 or 2 months free) while it would be much harder dealing with an Ebay reseller.
      But fair call.

      • $25 is good, but $24 is better. And I am pretty sure paypal covers you for all genuine probelms you might face dealing with ebay sellers. Also same Ebay seller selling the $40 simcards for $12 or soemthing, pretty good with free delivery. $40 gives you similar inclusions minus unlimited International calls

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/182044771298

    • Looks like this ebay seller is on ozbargain, dropped price to $23

      • -1

Cos a post you just came across is definitely why the ebay seller you just came across dropped prices what with you having omniscience and errythin' …

  • +2

If you stock up on this, do you need to port out and back in, since it's a starter kit?

    • Yes,if you want to keep the same number.

  • +1

How long is the expiry? Say I wanted to use this in November or something?

    • +3

Vodafone starter packs don't have any expiry

      • Wow is that so?! Thanks!

      • Though I suppose companies often do…

        • I have been told all vendors are moving to no expiry SIMS, not sure if legit.

    • +1

Vodafone SIM cards don't have expiry dates - as indicated in the OP's description

  • Good for a month for the data. But for me the killer is international text is charged and not included with deal (unlike amaysim ones which go on regular deals the 5plus and 8gb ones). Am voda fan but ill pass on this deal.

  • The data would be good if you live somewhere that gets good data speeds. That's the problem with Vodafone their network coverage isn't as good. I often get around 15 times the speed from my home connection. Where Optus and Telstra mobile network is faster than my home connection.

    • How do you measure speed? I was with Telstra, moved to Vodafone and yeah it's slower. Though it was that $12-ish deal.

  • Ahhh c'mon with recent deals on Amaysim, Optus and Telstra starter packs not crossing $10, this shouldn't be any more than $15 tops.

    :(

    • +2

I disagree. With unlimited international calls to 10 countries this is in fact a very good deal.

      • The other starter packs didn't include international minutes, and were $10.

If they did include international minutes, $5 extra would seem justified.

        • +1

The Telstra ones do if you activate on Freedom Plus. $30 recharge includes $200 international credit

        • +1

You're clearly just looking at it from a "it has too much of what I don't need". You know everyone has different needs right?

        • @realfancyman: yea, that's $200 credit line is bulls*1t. They charge ridiculous money per call and then there's a connection fee too. No such thing here.

        • This is with unlimited minutes. How much do you think 2 hours per day calling abroad (France, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, US, Germany) would cost with the Optus starter kit? Or Telstra?

        • @lordra: Yeah I know but it does have some international minutes so I was just correcting KaptnKaos

        • @lordra: Even then, you don't often get international calls included at all.. so it's pretty good I'd say! Realistically it's about 100 mins and that's 100 more mins than a lot of other providers give you.

        • +1

And that is exactly what arbitary made up value is meant to do: make things appear better than they are though the magic of the anchoring effect.

As well the marketing device needlessly adds complexity in order that the plan's value be impossible to ascertain without writing things down due to human's inability to deal with more than 3 variables at once.

When you feel bamboozled trying to compare this plan to any other that is by design.

        • @Diji1: +1, this is the plan! Instead of being honest and upfront and saying you get , say, 200 FREE minutes, they just pull up a number that gives you variable minutes! Then we have to trawl through their site, find out what the cost of calling, say, the UK is, then divide that plus the connection fee to get an estimate. The voda $50 plans and the optus $60 plans with BYOP is the BEST VALUE for money option at the moment, giving you unlimited overseas calling.

        • @realfancyman: :) All good, just annoyed at all the homework Telstra made me do to find out that other SPs were better VFM!!

        • @illumination: Well, yes and no. Sometimes you can get local unlimited calls free with text and some decent data for about $35 and then use a $10 calling card. Downside is that with a card you only dial a certain country (depends on the card). But yes, I'm not a fan of SPs telling me I get $xxx of credit to call anywhere. THat's just BS marketing. Very sus when I see it!

    • I am not aware that the Optus starter packs offer anything like this. They cost $10 for a $30 starter kit but that's it.
The $10 for 3 months Amaysim deal was Amazing(!) but unfortunately that does not happen very often. The fact that Vodafone kits do not expire is good, too.

      • +1

This is also a starter kit… Optus $30 Starter Kits have been seen on some occasions going for $10, and I believe (according to the most recent Woolies deal posted here) that Woolies is flogging $30 Optus Kits for $10 this coming week.

Amaysim $44.90 Starter Kits were recently offered for $10 at 7-11 stores nationwide, and that offer ran for about 2-3 weeks.

        • +2

True. But the $30 Optus kit does not give me the unlimited facilities I need and not 10GB.
Also, 7-11 is great unless you are in Tasmania!
They both have expiry dates, too.

        • +1

          @Lysander:

I suppose it comes down to priorities, so if an extra $10-$15 gives unlimited international minutes (and that's something you're after) then this would be great value.

And looking at the Amaysim Kits that I hoarded from 7-11, they don't seem to have expiry dates…

  • +1

    Good.

    • Good :(

  • This covers only for the first month. What do I do for the following months?

    • +2

You can buy 10 kits. Will last you ten months.

      • The terms & conditions say "one per customer". do they have any check or verification to see if we are buying more than one?

        • +1

Not sure. I know I can put more than one in the cart and buy it.
Also, just use different names when buying (all same address). Normally, verification is only done upon activation. That is when you need to put in your real name as it needs to match your license or passport.

        • @Lysander: Retailers are no longer required to ask for identity information due da gummints doing the spying for a change instead of forcing vendors to do it such as in the recent metadata legislation where da gummints spies on everyone with an internet connection.

Easy decision I guess when big food gives you so much banana skins.

        • @Diji1:

Well, every time I activate a sim it does ask for ID. When I put some fictional number in it knows as it does actually check with some kind of government database.
Maybe what you say is true when buying a sim in store?

      • Hope you can help Lysander.

I am on the last month of my Voda post paid, with a spare Telstra sim with no credit left on it. I understand I can ask Telstra to port over my Voda post paid number, then activate the $25 Voda starter kit, and ask them to port the number back again.

Can you tell me what I do at the end of the month $25 Voda month? Will the Telstra Sim be usable again with its original phone number and then I just ask Telstra to repeat the above step?

        Thanks for your help!

        • +1

No, the sim is useless once you port out.

        • +1

Buy a new $2 sim (Optus, Telstra or any of the resellers on those networks), port out to the new $2 sim. Once that is complete, activate the new starter kit, and port the number to the new Vodafone kit from your $2sim card. That way you can keep your number.

I usually change my unlimited deals on a monthly basis to do this direct. Example: Last three months I was on Amaysim ($10 deal) which was on Optus network. It expired so I could choose to go on one of the Vodafone kits I bought for $2 or Lebara ($5 deal) which also runs on Vodafone. Since they are already different networks, I could port my number out directly.

The $2 sim thing is only necessary if you are on one network and want to activate another starter kit on the same network and keep your number.

Then in short: Port out to different provider; once done and complete port back into the original provider.

The $2 sim becomes worthless. In fact any sim becomes worthless once the number has been ported out from it.

        • @Lysander: Hi Lysander, also hoping you can help me!
my $10 amaysim is expiring this saturday (sad face) but I don't want to be stuck for too long without a functioning sim so should I put my new sim in now and start the activation/porting process in advance or just wait till saturday and then stick new sim in?

        • +1

          @strawberrybug:

Depends on which provider you go to next.
If it is Vodafone you can do one of two things:

          1. Start the porting process around noon on Friday. Your Amaysim sim will still be active until the port is complete. That way you can ensure that by Saturday the number is ported over to your new provider.

          2. You wait until your credit expires on Saturday. Then start the porting process. Your Amaysim card will remain active so people still can call you until porting is complete. Due to it being the weekend it could take longer. But the good thing is that Vodafone will give you a temporary mobile number as soon as the sim is activated so you can already make calls, send texts etc. with that new number. So if you have two phones, you can keep the Amaysim in one phone to still receive calls on your number and use a spare phone with the new sim to make calls (don't send number option recommend to not confuse people with numbers) or call people back that called you on your number and you missed them. As soon as porting is complete Amaysim sim is useless and you can put the new active Vodafone sim with your ported number into your main phone and be happy.

        • @Lysander: Thanks so much for your help. I realised after I posted my question that I'm going to the one & only cheap starter kit I've purchased (I'm pretty new to OzB) and realised it's Optus…which based on others comments is going to take ages. So I'll heed your advice and start friday or even earlier if I can find a spare phone.

        • @strawberrybug:

Just start on Friday and then put in the sim when your current sim stops working. That means the new sim is active. Also, you should get an e-mail once your sim is active.
If I may suggest, buying one or two Vodafone starter kits is not a bad idea, if only for emergency (as no expiry date) when there are no other deals available.

        • @Lysander: Thanks again. Yep I've definitely been eyeing this deal to build up a stash of kits, I just wasn't sure if I would receive it in time.

        • +1

          @strawberrybug:

If you order today you should have it by Friday given you are in Sydney.
Definitely worth activating one on Friday, another one a month later, and a third before the bonus offer expires at the end of May if you have good use for the 10GB data. That way you will have three months unlimited text, phone calls, mms and 10Gb for $75 which is pretty good.

        • @Lysander: This is what I intend to do buddy, so if I buy 6 kits now, will I be sorted for the next 6 months? I don't care about data, only the unlimited overseas calls. I use about 500mb a month if at all.

        • Thanks for your advice!

        • +1

          @lordra:

That should be fine. You could easily tether your phone and use your data up with your laptop. Maybe sit outside on a weekend in a park, in a shady spot, have some little picnic, and do some "work" or correspondence on your laptop.
That way you could make good use of the 10GB.
Or use it to watch some free SBS movies. ;-)

    • wonder if these support the family data sharing option

      • I'm fairly sure that was for postpaid only. This is prepaid.

  • Find next provider.

  • +1

Just gotta use all my groupon prepaids, must resist..!

  • what type of sim card (standard, micro, or nano) does it include?

    • My pack has a full size and micro sim included.
However, when you add one to the cart on the Vodafone website it shows Full size, micro and nano. If you want to make sure, click chat once you added to the cart (but before checking out) and ask them via chat. That way you will also have it in writing, just in case.

      • thanks :)

      • Or spend a couple of bucks on a cutter and adaptors on tatbay and it don't matter what size you need anymore :)

  • I will check with ones I got. Give me a few minutes.

  • Does the data expire after 28 days?

    • Yes, I believe it does not rollover. But that is really the norm with unlimited deals so nothing particularly special or negative.

  • At this moment you can only add 4 items to your cart. If you need to buy more, why not visit one of our Vodafone Stores? You may remove an item from the cart and then add a new one in.

So I have to split into two transactions.

  • Righto, so I bit the bullet and bought 4. All it did was ask for my cc information. That's 4 months sorted for now. Cheers OP! A bit dubious about taking another 4!

    • It will ask for some ID upon activation - always did so for me.

      • But you're confident that I can use this for the next one year if required? Because this is a stonking good deal!

        • +1

As far as I know and am aware Vodafone kits do not expire.
Please feel free to check in the comments on other deals too which confirm this.
See comments above by "koolbir" and "YoursTruly" in this thread.

There are plenty in other deals, too. If you are still worried, go into a shop tomorrow, look at some Vodafone starter kits and see if you can find a sim expiry date. Or ask Vodafone on chat or in a store.

But I am very confident there is no expiry date. I still have seven kits left.

        • @Lysander: No worries, ta! Did you have a limit of 4 per transcation? Will they send me 4 kits in the post per order? How will I use it every month? Sorry buddy, new to this, eager to learn!! :)
Do I put a new sim in every month?

        • +4

          @lordra:

I am sure they will send you the 4 kits in the post per order. I reckon it should be there by Friday if you ordered today.
          Here is how it works.

          1. If you do not mind having a different number every month
          • just stick in a new sim once your current sim credit has expired and activate it
          • done
          1. If you want to keep your number
          • port your existing number to the first Vodafone kit you use
          • when it is about to expire (start of day 28 or end of day 27) port your number out to a $2 Telstra sim card
          • once your number has been ported to the $2 Telstra sim port your number to the new Vodafone kit
          • once you have started the porting process to the second Vodafone sim you will get a temporary number which you can use to call and text until the porting process is complete
          • during porting the $2 sim card will still work and you can receive calls under your normal number
          • when the process is complete, then the temporary number will cease and the sim has your normal number

          Sounds complicated but is not.

What I do is use one Vodafone kit, then, if there is an offer for one month on Amaysim etc. (either running on Optus or Telstra network) port my number there, after the expiry port it back to my second Vodafone kit etc. That way I can skip the step with the $2 sim but I have also done that on occasion. Really straightforward and no issue. Just make sure you start early enough to port it out to the $2 sim.

          Hope that helps.

        • @Lysander: Very detailed answer, cheers for that, yes I will keep my number and go hunting for those 50c optus sims, haha!

        • +1

          @lordra:

Keep in mind Optus is usually a little bit slower with porting apparently. Telstra is faster.
Also, you could try to get some free sims from virtual operators such as Lycamobile etc. as long as they run on a different network than Vodafone.

  • +4

OP. You haven't helped me (and I haven't asked anything), but props for your specificity and helpfulness. Not many around like you.

    • +2

Thank you. Very kind of you.
