I already have stacks of decent buckles from belts that have since given up, where do you get good leather belts without buckles?

    • These are ratchet based buckles, so the belts have no holes.

    • I have seen many leather belt guys making custom belts at a few of the markets in melbourne. If that helps

  • +4

    Material:BU Genuine Leather

who or what is BU leather? is it an alternative name or PU leather ( in which case the word genuine is kind of pointless…)

    • +2

      Bonded Upper Leather, i.e. rubbish.

      • Don't tell me people actually expected a belt costing 5.95 DELIVERED to your door to be of high quality…

        • I hope not, but they're asking so I tell.

  • +18

Its synthetic leather. Likely Bonded upper. Bonded leather can contain leather but it only 10~15% rest is plastic the surface will likely peel within 3 months.

  • +3

how can they say genuine if it's clearly synthetic? flagrant abuse of eBay guidelines much?

  • +1

    what exactly is BU leather?

  • +1

I have one of these, it goes ok.

Just keep in mind that the buckle only works when the belt has specific grooves on it, so don't expect to change it around.
Also, the grooves only run for ~ 20cms. If it isn't in the right place for you, you won't be able to use it.

    • grooves? you mean the holes?

      • +3

        there's no holes

        • oh, can't you trim the buckle end to make the belt the right length?

        • +2

@mtg: No, you have to trim from the buckle end before inserting it into the buckle.

BluBoy is absolutely correct, I have one as well, as you can see from the photo, the inside of the belt has a plastic ratchet/track system that requires a specific buckle.

    • Mod even required for the neater 38-32" size waist ? (I assumed so)

Seller is on the mark, $10 delivered now.

Interesting, about 20 sold in 28 mins after posting this but the vote is not going up in the same direction lol

Haha not everyone who uses Ozbargain has an account (you need an account to vote)

      • +1

        You're right xD

  • -4

    Undeclared rep…

    • I'm not a rep.

  • +5

Genuine, bona fide, authentically real leather (aka plastic)

  • Gonna try it and see how it go. Cheers

  • +1

    45 inches? Jeez

    • +5

The buckle seems to be easily removable type. So you could always cut to desired length (assuming your are after less than 45 inches :) )

  • It claims genuine "BU leather", it didn't say genuine "leather" so technically it is correct. I guess there must fake "BU leather" somewhere but I wonder why would anyone fake a genuine BU leather.

    • +3

they don't state "genuine BU leather" - rather "BU genuine leather", which implies that the belt is made of genuine leather
i think they would have little to answer for if a disgruntled customer were to open up an eBay dispute

      • Yes you are correct, I didn't read it properly.

  • +3

It is genuinely not genuine leather.

  • +3

The belt I have is plain-looking as plain can be. Real leather, and no fancy buckle. Paid $30 for it… and that was 20 years ago. I still have it to this day. Looks worn, but still in good condition. Belt holes have not torn, like some of my cheaper belts.

What I'm trying to say is, pay a bit more, and you get something that will last you for years.

    • I have a similar one like this purchased from newfrog a year ago. I use it everyday. The quality is good for the money. The belt buckle alone is well worth $6. The belt can be replaced with the real cowhide leather one once the synthetics leather is broken. I would say this belt can easily survive after 2-3 years of daily usage.

      • +1

I also have a similar one and everyday use over a year. I agree the quality is good for the money. This type of the belt doesn't use a hole, so we don't need to worry about the torn holes.

  • +1

Looks exactly like the belts you find on the streets in Thailand for the same price with car and designer brand logos. I looked at one and the buckle was complete rubbish and actually falls off.

  • +2

I bought some cheap genuine leather Chinese belt. Looks a million bucks, almost lasted 3 whole days! Still go the leather belt a girlfriend bought for me for $50 in 1990. It's still going well.

  • +1

    thanks for posting OP.
I noticed when looking on Ebay how many cheap belts there were. Like $3.50 belts inc postage lol. Just crazy.

  • for a 45 inch waistline??????
    how fat can you get??

    • +2

      very :) this is australia.

….Genuine leather doesn’t just mean that the product is made of real leather (which it is), but it also means it is the lowest quality of all products made out of real leather.

Genuine leather generally doesn’t last as long or look as nice as higher-quality leather. You’ll typically find it in belts from mall stores, shoes from lower-priced department stores, and bags or other goods in the lower-leather price range.

Goods marked as genuine leather will be several layers of low quality leather bonded together with glue and then painted to look like a better-quality leather. It’s what is left over when the other, higher grades are stripped away.

This grade of leather is acceptable if you’re just buying something cheaply and don’t care too much about its quality. It won’t last very long, so it probably shouldn’t be something you use every day….

    • Thankyou, TIL

Full-grain leather (best and highest-quality) > Top-grain leather (middle-of-the-road quality) > Genuine leather (lowest quality)

"If you can you should avoid leathers like bonded leather (scraps of leather glued together to form one piece), patent leather (leather treated with a glossy plastic finish), and corrected grain leather (lower quality leather printed with a fake grain)."

  • Won't let me hit buy until I put in a postcode to calculate postage (I do see it says its the shipped price above)

    But I get this error

Postage cost can't be calculated. Please enter a valid postcode.

  • Out of stock

  • I brought this Item around 2 Months ago - ITEM PRICE: AU $9.29 I have had many of these belts over the years and actually like them. they do not last for ever but they seem to fit my size a bit better as I always seem to be between holes.. LOL Brought several of these of the street when i was in china a few years back for a Few $$ easch… tend to last around a year or so for me, I cut back the belt as the buckle tends to tear away at the ends with its spikes, I have learnt to reinforsce the end with tape before doing up the clip which you cant see as its inside the buckle.
Ill give it a Thumbs up as I paid Over 30% more for mine. Still have 1 good one left from China and current one about to throw out as its now worn..

  • 100s of them like these on banggood and aliexpress

    • of course but at this price?

      • yes they usually have discount, i ve bought one a its good quality even their manbags

        • +3

please post one here when you see one at this price. cheers

        • @fchis: I second that - I need a few new belts

  • I totally hate this type of buckle from past experience. It broke on me and I couldn't undo it. this was after requiring needing to go to toilet urgently……..had a panic attack, lucky it worked at the last moment.

NEVER again will I use this type of buckle, too risky ahhaha

    • Lmfao, made my day.

Don't buy shitty quality ones like this, TRAKLINE don't break, they're durable as (profanity).

    • +1

well, you get a belt and a bit of thrill for under $10.. I say its a deal.

  • +1

I love these buckles, although the belt started to crack and I literally wore it down that much that when I put it on it was hanging by a couple of threads surprising the threads were stronger than the leather.

Belt lasted 8 months, ordered another one from China , wouldn't mind finding just the belt in Australia but cheapest is round $20 I found.

  • anyone got a link to a proper cheapish verified leather belt?
as in a proper piece of leather?

  • It works again but says $5.99 + $2.99 shipping.

    • or +$99 for express delivery

  • Wearing the exact one atm. $10 at a stall in Westfields. Two months & it hasn't peeled… yet… I like the ratchet. Quick and easy.

  • This will be good for the next OzBargain meet up.

  • Guess you need to wait for a whole month to get the delivery?

  • P.S. Its A great Challenge to get you Ladies to try and undo them… LOL
Its Not so Easy from the other Side of the Wearer…..

  • Postage now $4.00

Just a heads up, "genuine" leather is pretty shit.

There are four grades of leather:

What is Genuine Leather? Genuine leather is the third grade of leather and is produced from the layers of hide that remain after the top is split off for the better grades. The surface is usually refinished (spray painted) to resemble a higher grade. It can be smooth or rough. Ever heard of suede? Suede is tougher than cloth and is excellent for lining, but it's not a good idea to use it in areas where it gets stress.

What is Bonded Leather? Bonded leather is the dust and shavings of the leather glued and pressed together. It is the PT Cruiser of the leather world… pure junk. Leftover scraps are ground together with glue and resurfaced in a process similar to vinyl manufacture. Bonded leather is weak and degrades quickly with use. Most Bibles are covered with this.

  • Just received this… okay not great
