GRRRRR. Just bought 1 with the SSD upgrade for $988 from the previous deal :((((

    • What do you think of it?

      • +6

        It hasn't arrived yet lol

    • yeah. me too. :(

    • +2

I did too, but I'm happy with a 14" screen and a lighter laptop so it doesn't bother me.

  • Is cash rewards applicable to this as well?
Nevermind, I didn't read properly, yes you can use Cashrewards as well.

  • +1

Is this a good deal? It seems decent but is it 'awesome'?

    • +7

I owned a E440 so this might not apply.

The E series is pretty rough compared to the business grade T series. Stating the obvious I know but you definitely feel it.

My E440 had the worlds worst trackpad and screen, the keyboard sucked and there was so much flex in the chassis that you'd be forgiven for thinking it was made by Wrigley.

I've owned countless Thinkpad's and with 4 kids in the house, I have seen first hand how resilient they are. In the 6mths I used it, the screen hinge broke, the keyboard needed replacement and the screen was awful! In the end, it was a single drop from "sofa height" that determined it's fate (bin).

Ultimately, its not a bad buy if you need something basic, but definitely don't expect "awesome".

      • (bin)

Tsk tsk. Were is your electronics recycling?

  • All over this. Can anybody confirm:

    1. If you go through the ABN/business shop, does CashRewards still work? Assuming it would be the same as Student store, so if that works I'll try my luck.

    2. How easy is it to upgrade the RAM yourself? Does this void warranty? Don't want to void warranty is I'm thinking about upgrading given the poor support reviews.

    • +3

Can't answer 1 for you, but 2: if you can use a screwdriver and have hands with a reasonable range of motion, then it's easy - unplug, remove battery, remove large panel, there's your RAM slots. Shouldn't void your warranty but keep the RAM it came with should you need to get it fixed.

    • +3

If you go through the ABN/business shop, does CashRewards still work?

Yep, works via Lenovo edu & business store as well :)

  • Is this the same as last deal?

    • +2

No, this has SSD option included.

      • And $12 cheaper?
Can you put your own Samsung EVO SSD in this machine?

  • Would this be OK for light gaming and video editing? (These laptop GPUs confuse me!)

    • +2

light gaming is ok. this gpu is similar to the new intel HD gpu's.

    • +3

I have the exact same question. Performance wise, the R7 M370 is 50% less than the GeForce GTX-960m, which is pretty OK for gaming. (http://gpuboss.com/graphics-card/Radeon-R7-M370)

AFAIK, it's better to have more cores in the processor for video editing. The i7-6500U has only 2 cores.

I suppose for LIGHT gaming & editing, this is good for its price, considering the ThinkPad is quite reputable.

Something to consider: a refurbished Alienware R2 15 with i7 6700 (quad core) + 960m from the Dell Outlet. I've seen prices around the 1.5k mark.

    • +3

Laptop Intel CPUs have less than half the power of the desktop i5/i7 counterparts, they have half the number of CPU cores and lower frequencies to reduce power consumption. But relative to other laptop deals out there this is pretty darn good!

  • So circa $850 with cash rewards??
Hnnnnh wonder if I should get it. My 6 year old laptop is very close to carking it

  • +2

    Its $893.85 with education discount
Not sure if you can get cash rewards when using the edu discount

    • +1

Yes, CR will work via the Lenovo edu store :)

    • +1

Could I ask what this education discount relates to?

      • +2

You need a .edu email address

    • Thanks

    • How did you get the same specific computer through the edu store?

      • You register through their education store with a .edu email address

    • i cant get it down to that price with the edu discount , I have signed in but its still saying $935.67 (wifi added) . there is a box down
the bottom to tick to get 10% off my next purchase but not bringing anything down now ? what am i doing wrong ?

    1. I ordered the previous E460 deal but didn't realise it didn't have numeric keypad and probably prefer this larger model. Even though I cancelled about 9 hours after ordering Lenovo are having to send me the laptop before I can return it. Even though they haven't shipped it.
    2. Despite clicking through Cashrewards I haven't received a tracking received email 3 days later, so be careful as Cashrewards may not end up working.
    3. Unfortunately I would prefer a 1TB HDD to store stuff too. Not sure 192 GB would be enough with photos and videos nowadays for me. Otherwise I'd have to cart around a portable HDD all the time. Unfortunately not even a downgrade option today. Why?
    • -2

      Tough life huh?

    • +1

Despite clicking through Cashrewards I haven't received a tracking received email 3 days later

You won't get an email from Cashrewards if you cancelled your order.

      • +3

We'll it's not technically cancelled according to Lenovo. So no reason why Cashrewards shouldn't send a confirmation. Won't officially get cancelled until I receive then send it back in. So basically means transaction wasn't captured. Add to that a perfectly legit ebay transaction from before Christmas which has been pending is all of a sudden declined for no reason. Used codes from Cashrewards website. No real reason to decline.

  • +1

Lenovo, no love. Those of us burnt won't forget

  • included SSD, better than last deal.

  • Was about to order it then realised it doesnt have 1tb harddisk as per previous deals

  • +1

any way to put an extra hard drive in the dvd slot?

    • +1

The "tech specs" listed on the Lenovo website say that the DVD burner is "fixed" and "not removable". However this link from Lenovo support gives instructions on how to remove the drive. My guess is that you can do it once you find an appropriately sized caddy on Ebay, although I'm not sure if it would void warranty.

    • +2

      Exact same here.
I sent receits and no following up call.
Current balance has stayed in the account fir long however never paid. Purchased Dell notebook deal advertised last Christmas and bought this Lenovo deal today and wonder if they will ever send the money.

      • +2

PM me your CR email address please. When you say it stayed in the account, I'm assuming you mean it's pending? If so, you are aware there's a confirmation period of up to 90 days per store to allow for the return period etc to pass?

        • +3

TA, thanks you. You are right. The pending period is not yet at 90 days, but thank you so much for approving my eBay purchase. My faith is restored.

        • +1

@A4classic: Pleasure. As I said in the PM, we don't get paid by the stores until the confirmation period has passed. There's not much we can do re this process. The eBay purchases were approaching 55 days, and these are now approved. Glad you're happy :)

  • Awesome deal. Huge thanks TA.
Will try the education + CR.

  • how's the battery life on this laptop?

    https://www.thinkscopes.com/2015/09/07/ifa-2015-hands-on-thi…
link above says up to 9 hours but wanted to hear some real world results
    Thanks!

    • +1

Ha. I'd hazard 3-4 hours of video watching. Expect less for gaming or editing photos

  • Just bought one. Thanks TA

  • Is it a good bargain? Looking to buy but not in a hurry

    • Cheapest recently for this setup but only good for the price.

  • +2

Would the wireless upgrade for $17 be worthwhile?

    • I've read that it's worth it. I'm doing it, and also adding the 3D camera for future proofing.

    • +1

      Yep

  • +1

Is any possible to choose normal 1tb hdd? as it seems to be locked on ssd

  • +5

    Add a Sleeve for $1.
    ThinkPad 15” Fitted Reversible Sleeve

  • The dual core processor is a bit of a killer for me. I would gladly take three hour battery life if it meant it could handle my editing applications. I understand given the price under $1,000 it might not be possible but I would gladly accept an old gen quad over the latest dual. I even prefer the i7-3630QM (what my old laptop had) and that came out four years ago! When I try using dual-core PCs for tasks they hang and performance suffers. Other than that great deal, and I would snap it up if it came with a quad.

    • So what will you buy instead?

      • +2

Saving up for a Dell refurb, might try my hand on gumtree as well although most models with quad cores on there are listed at 1500 (not even gaming laptops) you would be better off with a Gigabyte P15 for1500 (even though it's a no name brand it has a quad and fairly powerful graphics card). Only detraction is no SSD but I think you might be able to swap it out though unsure http://www.msy.com.au/notebooks/16432-gigabyte-p15f-950-601s…

  • that's IPS screen, good for this price.

  • Awesome I've locked this in. With an ABN account I paid $937.53 with the upgraded wireless and upgraded camera to 3D sense for gesture control and 3D scanning etc. Definitely a great deal if CashRewards works. (++ If you don't want those upgrades it was about $850 or so through ABN store).

  • +1

I have this exact laptop but with the 1080p 3D webcam & upgraded wifi module.
    It's a great laptop
I bought a Windows 10 Pro key through eBay for $35

    • How do you find the battery life, weight and build quality? Pretty keen to get hold of mine now.

    • +1

bought a Windows 10 Pro key through eBay for $35

      That doesn't sound legit/safe?

      • +1

It worked & registered with Microsoft fine. Cheap Pro keys are all over eBay

        • Are they just upgrades from Home, or full licences? Link?

  • +1

    I got one!

$880 after cashback with 3D camera and the better wifi.

Now we play the waiting game.

    • did u use education discount? how can you get 880

      • Yes I used education discount.

        • did you use cash rewards too?

Im totally new to cash rewards, and am interested ion Getting the EDUCATION discount and CASH REWARDS together. Is this possible?

        • @ozbjunkie: Yes I used cash rewards and the education discount. I already received the tracking notification from cash rewards. ~$70 cash back.

  • Just cancelled my order from yesterday and re-ordered. Should all work out in theory $100 ahead plus SSD included. Thanks TA! Legend!

  • does this have an SD slot ?

  • -2

can I upgrade the ram to ddr4 2133?

  • +3

I just received an e560 this afternoon and it's charging now. Basically, it's a bang for buck laptop…

Pros: power, features, screen, keyboard, battery life, DVD, 3 x USB 3.0, HDMI, no PWM (so it's good for your eyes), dedicated graphics card (but not for gaming).

Cons: chassis is boring, chassis feels flimsy.

So the cost cutting is focused on the chassis. Your decision depends on whether looks and chassis strength are more important than power and features. I wanted power and features, but I'll make up my mind when I turn it on and see the screen. Good screen will make up for boring chassis. And you can return it within 2 weeks if not satisfied.

It got a good review here:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E560-Core-i7-Ra…

    • Also, it's a laptop, not an ultrabook, so it's a bit thicker and heavier. Also, it has screen bleed in multiple places, which you can see on fully dark backgrounds. But so far the screen looks much better (ips, matt, FHD) than all my previous laptops. When I got home, I couldn't tell if the battery was charged or not. There's no battery light, and the power adaptor was not warm - perhaps it was already fully charged back in China. Just got to the desktop now and it was fully charged.

      • Update us on the experience. How many days did it take to get to your place from the order date?

      • It took 11 days to receive it. Ordered on Thursday morning and it arrived the following Monday week in the afternoon. The tracking system is virtually useless.

        BTW, I'm sending it back….

CONS: Keyboard layout is very unprofessional (moved important keys away from the best spots and replaced them with useless keys so I kept hitting the wrong key 50 times per day). The writing on the function keys is too small to see quickly. The arrow keys sometimes insert numbers randomly into a document. It feels a bit flimsy. Sharp edges around the wrist. Had to uninstall McAfee antivirus because it caused the computer to crash. It has screen bleed when the background is black, but you don't notice that. You cannot disable the trackpad when you have a mouse. The bottom of the screen digs into your lap. Gets warm around the hands.

PROS: The keyboard feel is perfect. It is quite powerful (but not for games). High resolution screen. It's very quiet. No PWM (so it's good for your eyes). Has DVD. All USB 3.0. Battery lasts about 4 hours doing web browsing with a MBB dongle (but some people might need longer battery).

    • How long was it from order to delivery?

  • Hi guys,

Does anyone know if you can get tax back through the TRS scheme at the airport with those?

    • Since it's more than $300, i'd say yes.

      • Thanks Stockpimp, that's what I was thinking but got burned before by buying an iPad I thought was from Aus but turned out to be a grey import.

And thanks TA, this is a great deal.

This is from Lenovo Australia, yeah?

  • Hi TA, is there any chance Lenovo would do a deal on a laptop with these kinds of specs:
    E450
    Intel i3, integrated graphics
    14'' 1378x768 resolution
    8GB memory 1 DIMM

I'm looking for a price point around $500 but I might pay extra for SSD hard drive. The last Lenovo deal you posted was really tempting but ultimately I couldn't justify the price tag, even though the specs were very nice.

    • Hi there. There may be an i5 ThinkPad soon, but no promises. Not sure if there's much demand still for the i3.

  • Hey guys, I just ordered this 20 mins ago with a students discount
i used the Lenovo education discounts which rounded it down to $970 with Windows 7 and a $1 Laptop Sleeve. Windows 10 home = $893.
I also tried to use CashRewards, but i wasnt sure if it worked or not, I just opened cash rewards and opened lenovo through CR and purchased it, please reply if it works like that. With CR I can save roughly 77 bucks, so thats $893 with Windows 7/ 10 pro.

This is just for the students who want to save money or even parents/ siblings/ close friends of students. You can save a few extra bucks.

How long will it take to get to inner sydney from the Order date? If any of you know

  • Pity I just gotten the E460 using TAEDGE. Sigh

  • Hi TA, does CR work via the Lenovo employee store (http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/auepp)?

    • +1

Hi there Joe. Just received confirmation from Lenovo that purchases via the employee store are commissionable as well :)

  • will this capable to decode HECV ie H.265 movies?

  • Sold out? Think I missed out.

  • FML I was literally about to buy this, was just waiting for my pay to come in. Looks like its sold out now :(

  • Ah just starting to think of buying …

  • I had the link open already and hadn't noticed the 'Out of stock' update on this Ozbargain post. I just applied the code manually and it still worked. Happy days!

  • Hard decision, this or nuc.

This is portable at some degree but I can't think any situation where I need to carry laptop on holidays (5.5" mobile phone or ipad and lots of battery pack is enough). So, probably nuc and decent monitor is a better option for home computing.

  • Just received this. It's a bit too big and heavy for my liking. Strongly considering returning it and waiting for another E460 deal

  • Finally got mine. All working as expected except for some pretty bad backlight bleeding. Did anyone else who bought this have a similar issue?
