why do they give away $300 classes like every week? what's the catch? Hope i don't come off as rude I'm just curious.

    • +3

Probably because they're not really worth anywhere near $300 to begin with. Most of the courses are perpetually on special.

    • perceived value ;)

    • Not to mention Udemy usually have whole site $20-$25 discount codes going every month…. If people ever pay more than $30 for one then….

Udemy has some pretty great courses hidden in a massive amount of awful awful ones. Successfully Kickstarted/crowd funded courses (with ambitious funding targets) are pretty good, usually on technology subjects like programming, and much higher quality. Udemy is not a bad platform at all compared to some of the ugly mooc platforms utilized by the major universities. There's also some random no-budget, avg-bad quality gems by people who know their subject - I took one of the hip hop Dance ones that was just a DIY job by a kid with his camera in his lounge room and I got schooled - in the best way.

Never knew there were any crowd funded ones. Any examples you could point out? :)

      • This guy crowd funded the unity and blender courses which I backed - awesome quality and teaching style, haven't tried the others by him. Plently of free resources are available on these topics on YouTube etc but I found/find it way easier to learn with a progressive curriculum and the student community have discussions and post their work which is inspiring - very active Facebook groups for both, also the lecturers are great at answering questions and keeping materials up to date for new software releases with new features. I'd recommend them if you're interested in learning these topics next time udemy has a good sale on them https://www.udemy.com/u/bentristem/

  • Thanks, Version Control Basics for Programmers & Web Developers is now expired ($9)

    • Do we need to sign up?
    • Are you spammed heaps?
    • Once the course is completed, can you go back to the details at any time?

    Thanks!
